UFC welterweight Demian Maia is looking to face Nick Diaz in his next fight. The elite Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter respectfully asked to face the Stockton-native and is also looking to land on the UFC’s return to Brazil at UFC 163. UFC Tonight’s Ariel Helwani talked about the prospective matchup on last night’s show.
Said Helwani:
“Demian Maia’s manager Eduardo Alonso says that Demian’s anxious to get back. Demian wants to return on the August 3rd card in Rio, and he’d be honored to fight Nick Diaz. They have a lot of respect for Diaz. This fight makes a lot of sense. If you look at the welterweight rankings, everyone else is booked or just fought. They’re ranked fifth and sixth and would make a lot of sense.”
While the bout would make sense, Nick Diaz has remained adamant about staying retired unless given a rematch with UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre or a fight with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.
