UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones is an overwhelming favorite going into his April 27 title-defense against Chael Sonnen and for good reason. The larger, stronger “Bones” has beaten five former UFC title-holders in a row, holds an overall record of 17-1, and has finished almost every foe he’s faced. Meanwhile, Sonnen is coming off a knockout loss and hasn’t fought at 205 pounds in years.
As such, it’s easy to understand why Jones is so supremely confident entering their UFC 159 headliner.
“I’m really not concerned with too many of Chael’s gifts,” explained Jones on this week’s episode of UFC Tonight. “Chael is an awesome fighter, he has pretty good boxing, he loves wrestling and he’s been really successful with his wrestling. He has really good ground-and-pound. I’ve just familiarized myself with the whole thing and I’m really comfortable with what I’m getting ready to face. I wouldn’t say any of it really concerns me. I’m just ready to go out there, react, be instinctual, do my best and try to do what I do.”
In addition to his physical gifts, two other areas Jones believes he holds an advantage over his adversary in relate to heart and hard work. When asked to explain, the 25-year old elaborated by labeling Sonnen as a longtime cheater.
“People know that Chael Sonnen has done steroids throughout his whole career and that’s probably why his testosterone is low now,” blasted Jones. “I don’t think that is the heart or the attitude of a champion.”
Sonnen has been a proponent of TRT (testosterone replacement therapy) dating back to his 2010 bout against Anderson Silva and was suspended after testing positive for an elevated level of the substance shortly after losing the scrap. To date it marks the only time Sonnen has failed a drug screening.
