In front of television cameras, fans would never suspect UFC president Dana White (pictured) has been suffering through a debilitating inner-ear disorder that renders him helpless every single day. Meniere’s disease forces White to lie motionless in a dark and quiet room until the nauseousness subsides.
The menacing spells can last anywhere from 15 minutes to several hours.
“I always felt dizzy,” White said Thursday. “I never felt good. When I tried to work out, the music in the gym was killing me. The music was killing me.”
The pain got so bad, White underwent a radical procedure in the United States this past January that he has since learned was banned in Germany 15 years ago. It didn’t work. In fact, it made things worse.
Speaking of those Germans, there might not be a cure for cancer, but my money is on the Germans to eventually create that magical pill.
White, who was born in Boston so he’s naturally a diehard Red Sox and Celtics fan, received a call from New York Yankee third baseman Alex Rodriguez that he needed to visit Dr. Peter Wehling in Dusseldorf, Germany and undergo platelet-rich plasma therapy.
“A-Rod told me, ‘Listen, I know you’re going through this stuff. I don’t know if it’s going to help you, but you should try it. Worst-case scenario, this doesn’t work,’” White revealed.
Rodriguez had the revolutionary procedure done on his hip after he was referred by Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant, who discovered the fountain of youth after having PRP done on his knee.
“Kobe calls A-Rod and tells him, ‘You’ve got to go do this. I’m telling you, you’ll be running sprints next week,’” White said. “And A-Rod’s like, ‘Dude, you’re crazy. I can’t even walk.’ He said, ‘Dana, I was running wind sprints, uphill the following week.’
“So I said, ‘I’m going, man. I’m gonna try it.”
The groundbreaking procedure involves removing some of the patient’s own blood, incubating it at a slightly raised temperature and than running the blood through a centrifuge to isolate naturally occurring anti-inflammatory proteins, which are then injected back into the patient.
Following this month’s UFC on FUEL TV 9 event in Sweden, White made a pit stop in Germany to undergo phase one.
“The lady asked me, ‘Do you have problems with needles?’” White shared. “And I’m like, ‘Nope. Don’t bother me at all.’ She sticks the needle in me and I’m like, ‘Oh my God. This lady doesn’t know what she’s doing. That hurt.’ I looked down and they had a Slurpee straw in my arm.”
White then went back to visit Dr. Wehling on April 7 for phase two. Within days, White was completely cured.
“I haven’t felt this good in two years,” a jovial White expressed. “I was having attacks every single day. Every day.
“It was [expletive] amazing, just amazing. I’m done. I’m good. I’m still going to eat the way I’m supposed to eat and do what I’m supposed to do, but when I tell you that healed me, wow.”
And the Bostonian can thank a Yankee, and indirectly a Laker, for his new lease on life. Sorry, Red Sox and Celtic nation, White’s loyalties have shifted.
“I love A-Rod,” White emphatically stated. “I’m a Red Sox fan and an A-Rod fan. Boston fans will have to deal with it. That guy saved me.”
White said that if the results from his procedure remain positive, he has to go back to Germany for one final injection in three months and then he’s done forever.
