UFC President Dana White may have a hardened exterior and an intimidating demeanor, but the outspoken executive is actually a kind, compassionate individual by most accounts. He also spent a solid chunk of his life in Boston and has never shied away from his connections to Bean Town.
Understandably, last week’s bombing at the Boston Marathon struck a chord with White as it did countless individuals across the world. However, being in a position of power with a big bank account to boot has provided White with a unique opportunity to help those affected by the situation, and he plans to do just that next weekend after the conclusion of UFC 159.
“I have a hard time talking about this in public because if I really do talk about it, I’m going to come off like a psycho. I’ve really limited talking about it, but I’m going to Boston on Saturday. After (the event), I’m jumping on a plane and flying to Boston, and I’m actually going to go visit some people that were affected by this horrible event,” explained White at the post-event press conference for UFC on FOX 7. “I’m going to go to Boston and write some checks. I don’t even know how I’m going to do it or what I’m going to do, but I’m going. I want to go. I’m going next weekend.”
Three civilians were killed by a pair of bombs set off by brothers Tamerlan Tsarnaev and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. More than 175 people were injured as well. Additionally, the two also murdered a police officer prior to being caught by authorities.
The UFC is scheduled for a show in Boston on August 17.
