With all eyes on UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones, who surely looks to make a statement in the wake of the UFC 151 debacle, other quality fights seem to be going under the radar this weekend. MMA Frenzy has chosen to give some shine to bouts to watch other than the two title fights on the docket for this weekend.
Fortunately for the UFC, they have constructed a card that is rock-solid from top to bottom, sprinkling in something for everyone. This is just a taste of what fans can expect from UFC 152, which takes place this Saturday at the Air Canada Centre.
One bout to watch with eager eyes on this weekend’s UFC 152 bill is Charles Oliveira vs. Cub Swanson. This fight may very well be a bout to determine a new number-one contender to Jose Aldo’s featherweight crown, “Do Bronx” has been a force since moving down to 145 lb. and Swanson has put together quite the impressive run of his own. While I can’t imagine too many people are excited about the prospect of potentially watching the So Cal fighter take on Aldo for a second time, this is a clash of two highly exciting fighters with actual stakes involved. The fluidity in the Brazilian’s muay Thai game has become a thing of beauty and his jiu jitsu ability is otherworldly. Meanwhile, the Jackson’s fighter is a stout grappler and a powerful striker, so powerful in fact that he literally hits too hard for his own body to handle, as he suffers from a broken hand nearly every time out. All these combustable elements are sure to make for 9a “Fight of the Night” contender.
If there is one fight to look forward to this weekend, just look to the FX preliminary card opener. TUF veteran Marcus Brimage will take on rising talent Jim Hettes. Brimage is a powerful fighter who loves to push the pace and Hettes will be more than happy to oblige him. Look for a fast-paced war between the two fighters with Brimage trying to avoid the devastating submission game of Hettes.
