Strikeforce took one on the chin yesterday after heavyweight Frank Mir was forced out of a match-up with Daniel Cormier on November 3 due to injury. Fortunately, it looks like a number of other fighters are willing to fill the vacancy created by Mir’s health-related woes including borderline title-contender Fabricio Werdum.
According to the Brazilian, he is willing to help Zuffa out by taking the Cormier fight if a win will put him in position to challenge for the divisional title.
“Everyone knows how hard I’ve worked to return to the UFC, and I’m sure I’ll be ready for any fight that proves me to dispute the belt, my main goal,” posted Werdum on his Facebook page. “I will always be available to the event to help meet any shortage.”
Werdum Interested in Heading TUF Brasil Team
The 16-5 Werdum owns a number of impressive wins in his career including those against Roy Nelson, Alistair Overeem, and Fedor Emelianenko. He is 2-0 since re-joining the UFC including a June knockout of Mike Russow.
Other fighters to step up in the wake of Mir’s injury thus far are Nelson and Andrei Arlovski, though “Big Country” is currently linked to a fight with fellow TUF 16 coach Shane Carwin and Arlovski is inked to compete under the ONE FC banner.
