READER REAX: Should the UFC run a mixture of title relevant fights and grudge matches at the top, or only title relevant fights?

We asked MMATorch readers this weekend the following question: Do you like UFC featuring a mix of "super fights" or "grudge fights" that don't have likely title contendership ramifications, or do you like almost all fights to have some ramifications on future championship fights? Here are some of the responses we've gotten.


Mick R. (via Facebook): It's not a black and white issue. Grudge matches absolutely have a place in combat sports, but they shouldn't supersede the sports aspect, particularly as UFC have just introduced rankings. I think the best formula is for UFC main events to be championship fights based on rankings, with the co-main event being a non title grudge match i.e. the suggested Wanderlei vs. Chael fight.

Robert J. (via Facebook): I like fights in general but grudge fights, super fights, and title fights definitely add a bit more interest. I also enjoy background stories that help me get to know a fighter so i know if i want root for or against him.

Kenny D. (via Facebook): I don't think grudge matches should be the focal point of fight cards. Let the sport aspect shine through before trying to just make ratings by going with the "we don't like each other" edge. I, for one, don't care about how people feel about each other. I've seen many grudge matches that are bore fests. I think a championship should be more motivation to leave it all in the cage than simply not like someone.

MMATorch Forum User Bodey: Personally, I don't care if the fight has title ramifications or not as long as the fight is a good one. However, it seems more and more that what looks like a good fight on paper doesn't materialize inside the Octagon.

Marcques B. (via Facebook): I don't mind if fights don't have title ramifications or are a grudge match. If a fight is good it will create those things. A good fight can create future title contenders and setup guys to have a competitive grudge. Through out the history of MMA and other sports close matches create causes for rematches and competitive grudges. In some cases just grudges.
