With UFC interim bantamweight champ Renan Barao officially out of a June 15 title-fight with Eddie Wineland at UFC 161, the question of how the company will handle the vacancy has now arisen. Whether Wineland’s contendership carry over to a future bout with Barao or the if the UFC would prefer to keep him on the card remains to be seen, but at least one fighter might be willing to step up on short notice if called upon.
According to a recent conversation between Urijah Faber and MMAMania, “The California Kid” is open to the idea as long as a win lands him a crack at divisional gold Wineland was set to receive.
“No one has reached out to me about filling in but if the opportunity comes knocking, I’ll definitely consider it,” said Faber. “I feel like in the rankings I’m number two. It’s kinda like waiting to see what happens. If an opportunity comes take it. That’s always been my mentality.”
Faber is 28-6 in his career and looked especially sharp in 2013 with submissions of Ivan Menjivar and Scott Jorgensen. Adding to his confidence, Faber picked up a decision win over Wineland in his UFC debut.
