Tim Sylvia will get another chance to make a first impression when he slugs it out with Tony Johnson Jr. at the upcoming ONE FC: "Rise to Power" event on May 31, 2013 in Manila.
Asia's biggest mixed martial arts (MMA) organization has just added a "big" fight to the preliminary card of ONE FC: "Rise to Power," in the form of a heavyweight match-up betweem Tim Sylvia and Tony Johnson for the May 31 event in Manila.
Sylvia (31-8-1) has already appeared once for ONE FC in a fight which ended in ignominy after an illegal soccer kick from Andrei Arlovski resulted in the referee declaring a "no contest." The two-time UFC champion will be hoping for a more satisfactory conclusion to his second trip to Manila when he takes on highly rated wrestler Tony Johnson Jr. (6-1).
Rated as one of the best heavyweight prospects in the world, Johnson's career has not progressed at the expected rate due to the infrequent nature of his fights. Sylvia will be just the third opponent he has faced in three years. A star wrestler who has also enjoyed success on the American football field, his only career loss came at the hands of Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix winner Daniel Cormier in 2010.
Sylvia has gone 7-2-0-1 in his last 10 fights and the 37 year old last saw action on New Year's Eve when he dropped a unanimous decision to Satoshi Ishii. The most successful ONE FC heavyweight so far is Rolles Gracie, who has won two fights out of two for the Singapore-based promotion, but Canadian Taiwanese heavyweight Paul Cheng was also signed recently and the division is slowly starting to stack up.
Also reported to be on the preliminary card of "Rise to Power," which is taking place at the 20,000 capacity SM Mall of Asia Arena, is a lightweight fight between Felipe Enomoto (6-5-1) and Lowen Tynanes (4-0). The former is a Japanese Swiss fighter who never takes an easy fight while the latter is a Hawaiian high school wrestling champion who recently won the King of the Cage light middleweight title.
The Sylvia vs. Johnson and Tynanes vs. Enomoto fights are part of the free prelims, which will be streamed live on the internet and available to watch online at no charge. The main card will be live on Star Sports and pay-per-view (PPV).
