Two men on a short list of contenders at 145 pounds have been paired at UFC 164 in the form of a featherweight fight between Chad Mendes and Clay Guida. Guida-Mendes were originally set to tussle at UFC on FOX 7 before an injury to “The Carpenter” forced him out of the tilt. However, the change had little effect on Mendes who ultimately went on to knock out replacement Darren Elkins in 68 seconds.
UFC officials have confirmed the clash’s addition to the August 31 card. No headliner has been attached to the lineup though other bouts booked for the Milwaukee stop include Dustin Poirier-Erik Koch and Ben Rothwell-Brandon Vera.
Mendes has racked up a trio of first-frame KOs since losing to champion Jose Aldo, improving his career mark to 14-1. In addition to Elkins, “Money” also owns past victories over Koch, Michihiro Omigawa, and Cub Swanson.
The bout will mark Guida’s second since dropping down to 145 from lightweight, beating Hatsu Hioki by decision last January in his divisional debut. He holds an overall record of 30-13 including fifteen submission finishes.
