Damn Brian Bowles is still going?!! Always wondered what happened to that guy, almost drafted him on my FFL but thought he'd quietly retired!

Bowles was out of action for all of last year, and wasn't even booked for any fights. Having neared Abe Vigoda levels of "Is he still alive?", UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby dusted off the cobwebs and pitted Bowles against George Roop for UFC 160. MMA Junkie confirmed the bout earlier this morning. Bowles (10-2) famously took the WEC title away from Miguel Torres in August 2009, but he lost his only defense against Dominick Cruz after suffering a broken hand. He didn't fight again in the WEC, but when he entered the UFC he notched consecutive wins over Damacio Page and Takeya Mizugaki. The Faber defeat marked the first time Bowles had ever been finished. Roop (13-9-1) recently won his bantamweight return against Reuben Duran at UFC 158, bringing his overall record at 135 lbs to 1-1. The TUF 8 alum previously went 1-3 (all at featherweight) in his UFC return. The career highlight for Roop is a head kick KO of Chan Sung Jung at WEC 51. UFC 160: Velasquez vs. Silva II is on May 25th in Las Vegas, Nevada. It is likely that this fight will wind up on the preliminary card. |
