It seems one of the most important dynamics of a successful camp is to have a head coach who serves as a father figure of sorts, mentoring talent and passing along wisdom in hopes of seeing students succeed. Greg Jackson certainly plays such a role at his renowned gym, and, as a result, felt the need to back out of the picture for a recent rumble between two of his talented pupils.
Typically, Jackson plays a key part in preparing welterweights Georges St-Pierre and Carlos Condit for combat. However, given their title-fight at UFC 154, Jackson didn’t want to pick sides and let each go their own way where training was concerned. In fact, he didn’t even watch them go to war on Saturday night based on the emotions involved.
“It was too personal for me. I love both of those guys. It is just business. They did what they had to do, but for me it was a personal thing and not something I enjoy. So I hung out with the family and didn’t participate,” revealed Jackson in an interview with The MMA Hour, implying he had no interest in ever seeing the bout.
Jackson also humbly admitted that even if he had decided to get involved it probably wouldn’t have mattered much anyways given the otherworldly ability both Condit and St-Pierre possess.
“I don’t think I could have changed anything,” the sought-after sage stated. “I don’t think it’s one of those things where I’m that important. And that goes for either guy. I don’t think I would’ve changed things either way.”
With the fight out of the way, Jackson explained he plans to start working with both men again in the near future and has already spoken to each to check in on their respective conditions.
