Light heavyweight Stephan Bonnar didn’t have a bigger fan than UFC President Dana White entering an October 13 tilt with Anderson Silva at UFC 153. Though already liked based on past contributions in the cage, the 35-year old truly endeared himself to White by stepping up on short notice to face Silva at the event when a headlining match-up fell apart, sacrificing a standard training camp to prepare for a task as ominous as defeating MMA’s top pound-for-pound fighter in his proverbial backyard.
However, White’s opinion on Bonnar has changed in light of the Ultimate Fighter finalist’s failure to pass a post-fight drug test.
“I haven’t talked to him since,” admitted White in an interview with MMAWeekly. “I don’t hate him. I just don’t want to talk to him.”
Bonnar’s hit for steroid use was the second of his UFC career and came after an extended break from competition the “American Psycho” viewed as a precursor of his pending retirement. As dark a mark as the result may have put on Bonnar’s career, or even the UFC for that matter, White pointed to another factor as being the most disappointing of the entire situation.
“It sucks. I think the thing that bums me out the most about the Stephan Bonnar thing is that he didn’t tell me. He wasn’t planning on fighting. He said that he was practicing to maybe do some pro wrestling and whatever the excuse is. I’ve known Stephan for a long time. We have a great relationship. Tell me,” White concluded.
Though suspended for a year based on the failed screening, Bonnar has already announced he is done with fighting and plans to explore other avenues outside of the Octagon.
