Chris Weidman withdraws from UFC 155 fight with Tim Boetsch, replaced by Constantinos Philippou

It’s been a rough month for unbeaten UFC middleweight Chris Weidman to say the least. First, the native New Yorker’s house suffered significant damage as a result of Hurricane Sandy when the super-storm wreaked havoc on the East Coast. Now, Weidman has suffered a shoulder injury while training for a December 29 tilt with Tim Boetsch at UFC 155 and has been forced to pull out of the fight as a result.

“I hit a double-leg and that’s it. My shoulder landed weird and I felt a pop. I can’t even move my arm,” explained Weidman in an interview with Newsday.

No details were provided about his condition or the timetable for his return. Weidman is considered to be one of the division’s top talents and viewed by many as the #1 contender to champion Anderson Silva’s title.

Stepping in for Weidman will be his Serra-Longo teammate Constantinos Philippou. The 11-2 middleweight has come out victorious in four consecutive fights including success against Jorge Rivera, Court McGee, and Riki Fukuda. He was scheduled to face Nick Ring this past weekend at UFC 154 but saw the match-up fall apart at the last second when Ring came down with a viral respiratory infection.
