Jose Aldo Thinks Win Over Frankie Edgar at UFC 156 Will Prove He Can Compete as a Lightweight

JoseAldo_Headshot153

Featherweight Jose Aldo has earned a reputation for himself as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in MMA due to his dismantling of divisional foes, racking up fourteen straight wins including success against stand-outs such as Kenny Florian, Chad Mendes, Mike Brown, Cub Swanson, and Urijah Faber. Aldo’s blend of power, precision, and overall technique are rare and led to countless rumors about the Brazilian testing his hand as a 155er.

While Aldo is not opposed to the idea of fighting as a lightweight, he’ll only do so when he gets a green light from his trainers. Of course, if he’s able to beat former 155-pound champ Frankie Edgar on February 2 at UFC 156, that day is likely to come sooner than later.

“This fight with Edgar will be a turning point. If I can win (against) him well, then I can prove that I can go (to lightweight). He has a very strong reputation thanks to destroying several opponents. That’s the motivation for me to face him and that will be probably my last biggest challenge (at featherweight).”

“I see (him) as a challenge. Frank already proved that he is a trooper, he will go to fight all five rounds, and he doesn’t give up. This is the fight I wanted.”

“It would have been a great fight in Brazil since Edgar is very popular in Brazil. Edgar is popular in Brazil because he has a lot of stamina, he never gives up, and he has a very good heart. But it’s a very special week with the Super Bowl and I’m really happy for that.”

Cesar Gracie discusses Nick Diaz's potential opponents for UFC return, still eyes GSP fight

DiazNate_Wide_5.png

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Nick Diaz is currently serving a suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commission after testing positive for marijuana metabolites in February, and though he's fighting the suspension in court, he's still likely to be out of action until February of 2013 anyway. When he returns, he's got a number of potential options, and his manager Cesar Gracie discussed those in an interview on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani.

"[The UFC] asked me, [Josh] Koscheck or Demian Maia," Gracie said. "I said probably Koscheck, more people have heard of him at 170. They're both really tough guys though. But ultimately, we want the bigger fights. I could see, maybe, Nick and [Johny] Hendricks would be interesting. That's what I'm thinking if they don't give him GSP, maybe a fight like that."

Of course, Diaz is still aiming for a fight with Georges St-Pierre, especially after the way last year played out, and how close his fight with Carlos Condit was in February. But he and his camp are also interested in Anderson Silva as well, and Gracie said they've received some mutual feelings on that front from Silva's camp.

"We're pushing for the GSP fight," Gracie said. "That's what we're going to push for, GSP or Anderson Silva. That's the two fights that interest us the most, and that's the one's we're going for."

"[Silva's] people are into it. We're into it. The fans, I think, would be into it. We've got convince Dana [White] about it now. Obviously the fight that makes sense to them, and I don't disagree, is Anderson-GSP, and like I said, I would watch that fight. That would be great to watch. But let's get real. If GSP just absolutely says no, then what? You can't make a guy fight. That's the thing. And Anderson, if they want to promote a superfight and if the stars align, I think Nick would be into it."

Penick's Analysis: All of the options presented here are entertaining, and they're going to be viable depending on what the UFC wants to do. They can put him in a rematch with Condit, they can have him fight Koscheck, they can have him fight Hendricks, or they can have him fight GSP if the Silva fight doesn't come together for the Welterweight Champ. Either way, Nick Diaz fights are almost always exciting, so regardless of who he's matched up against it will make for a good fight for the UFC. As to the Anderson Silva idea, that's the furthest thing from a realistic option right now, but a year or two down the line, if Silva is still in the sport, that is one of those fights that could come together.

Josh Koscheck - The "Bad Guy" Returns

UFC welterweight Josh KoscheckJosh Koscheck has never hesitated to pursue something he wants, and when the former number one welterweight contender makes his return to the Octagon in 2013, he is coming back with a vengeance.

After being sidelined with a back injury for the final quarter of 2012, the 34-year-old has his sights set on making another run at the top of the division. For the past six years, Koscheck has been one of the organization’s elite 170-pound fighters, and it is a status he is eager to regain when he steps back into action. In order to jump start this process, it is going to take a high profile fight with a marquee opponent, and “Kos” believes a bout with former Strikeforce champion Nick Diaz is the perfect solution. Never one to mince words, Koscheck shared his motivation for pursuing the matchup.

“That is a fight I’ll take all day long,” said Koscheck of the possibility of a clash with Diaz, who is still on a suspension handed down by the Nevada State Athletic Commission following his UFC 143 bout with Carlos Condit in February. “I feel like it’s a great matchup for me and I believe the fans are already on board to see that fight. It is a fight that makes sense and I think maybe Nick Diaz and I should settle it up to see who takes the spot behind the number one contender (Johny Hendricks). I feel it would be a great fight for the fans, with a great build-up, and Nick brings a lot to the table. He’s a good fighter. He’s tough. He has that tenacity where it’s ‘It’s me against the world and %$#$ you!’ I have the same attitude. I enjoy fighting people who have the same attitude because they are going to come in, never give up, and they are going to stand in front of you and fight. Nick Diaz will absolutely do that.”

In a potential matchup between the season one TUF alum and the Stockton “bad boy”, the UFC would have guaranteed fireworks. Both men carry brash personas which have set them apart from the status quo of fan-friendly competitors under the organization’s banner. And while Diaz fights have been typically painted in a “white hat” vs. “black hat” fashion, Koscheck promises it will be nothing of the sort if the two are allowed to throw down.

“It’s going to be bad guy versus bad guy,” Koscheck said. “We haven’t seen too many of those matchups in the UFC. I feel like the Nick Diaz fight needs to happen and I’m pushing for it. I told the UFC that is the fight I want. He’s a guy who supposedly beat Carlos Condit in his eyes and he still feels he can beat Georges St-Pierre.

“He’s tweeting about it and feels he is the number one guy. Well guess what? Don’t be scared homie. I’m waiting for you. I’ve called him out and I haven’t heard him call me out yet. This isn’t personal with Nick Diaz. I see him as a tough fighter and I want to test myself. I want to put myself right back into the mix of things by beating Nick Diaz.”

As Koscheck pushes for a collision with Diaz, the road to recovery will continue. While preparing for a bout with Jake Ellenberger for the ill-fated UFC 151 card, Koscheck suffered a back injury which forced him to the sidelines. The setback not only forced his withdraw from a showdown with “The Juggernaut,” but was severe enough to put him on the shelf for the remainder of the year.

While the situation certainly slowed him down for a bit, as soon as his body began to heal, Koscheck jumped back into the rigors of training. Determination and an unbreakable work ethic set the physical wheels in motion, but the feeling of having something to prove set the motivational fires ablaze.

“I got a lot to prove,” Koscheck said. “There are a lot of people who have doubted me for a long time now. I just have to make up my mind and do it. That is the game plan. I’m coming back and 2013 is going to be my year. People are going to see a different Josh Koscheck. Things are good at my new camp in Fresno. I’m starting to get a lot of guys to come in and train with me full-time. It was a big adjustment period leaving San Jose and AKA. Having to start my own camp and then having a big fight with Johny Hendricks was a lot to deal with. I’m not making any excuses because I was damn ready for Johny Hendricks, but I have established a good base camp in Fresno and things are looking up.

“I have some good young guys in the gym who are hungry young guys. That gives me more motivation, and it drives and pushes me to become a better version of myself. That’s the big thing. I’m trying to become a better me as a fighter. My only goal right now is to become a better fighter and go out there and win. That’s what matters the most for me. I don’t care so much about making money; I care about winning fights. My managers have always told me if I do my job and win fights, they will make me money. That is what I have to do. I have to go out there and win fights.”

Over the course of his career, Koscheck has developed a reputation for being a fighter who is willing to step up in any situation. On multiple occasions during his time in the UFC, the organization has called him to step up on short notice and Koscheck has answered the call proudly.

That particular issue came under heavy fire this past summer during the debacle of UFC 151. For the first time in the Zuffa-era, the UFC was forced to cancel an event due to having the headlining bout on the card fall through. Koscheck has always embraced the “anytime/anywhere” mindset and believes fighters not focusing on what matters the most has resulted in poor decision making.

“The sport is definitely changing,” Koscheck said. “There are so many more shows with FOX, FX, and FUEL coming on board. I try to be ready to fight at all times because I know anything can happen when you have so many events. It’s our job to be in shape and be ready to fight anybody at any time on short notice.

“Opportunities don’t come in life very often and I like to jump on them when they come my way. If I can stay healthy for a whole year straight, I would fight every month if they would let me. That has always been my attitude. The only time I really make a big payday is when I fight and that is what I like to do. I like to go out there and compete, but winning is the most important thing.

“At the end of the day, the money is great, but the one thing that matters is to go out there and get wins. I feel if other fighters had that mentality then the UFC wouldn’t have to cancel a card. I think fighters still need to carry the mentality that they will fight anybody and do whatever they have to do to win. I feel like some fighters, myself included, have gotten away from that at times.

“This is about winning and one of the things Georges St-Pierre does so well is find a way to win. If it’s just wrestling he finds a way. If it’s just striking he finds a way. That is one of the reasons why he has been so successful. He has a game plan, sticks to it, and goes out there and dominates. He wins fights. I feel Georges has done a very good job. It shows because he’s been the champion for a very long time and I think he’s going to continue to be the champion for a lot longer if he continues to fight the way he does.

“I think a lot of fighters go out there thinking they have to be flashy, try for knockouts, and they end up losing. They try to put on exciting fights but at the end of the day it comes down to getting the win.”

While Koscheck has been a staple in the upper tier of the 170-pound weight class for years, the division he is set to return to has taken on a different shape. A new wave of contenders has stormed through and gained a foothold in the rankings, and the five-time fight night bonus award winner is looking forward to knocking them back down the ladder.

“I think this division has always been tough,” Koscheck said. “There is always good competition and a ton of guys who are tough in this weight class. Being one of the best welterweights in the UFC for the past seven years is a good accomplishment, but it’s not what I want. I want to be the number one guy and I’m still working towards it. I still feel like I’m in my prime and have a lot of fights left.

“My last fight with Hendricks was a close fight and now he’s right at the top. I need to make some small improvements in my game plans. I need to add a little more striking, cardio, jiu-jitsu, and get back to old-school wrestling. If I do those things I’m going to be right there in the mix.

“I’m not ready to retire any time soon. I still have a lot of fights left in me and more business things I need to do financially to make sure that some day my kids don’t have to work. My goal is to push myself and build my future right now. In 2013 it starts and hopefully it starts with me whipping Nick Diaz’s ass.”

My Favorite Fight: Brendan Schaub on GSP's Latest Win

When I think about my favorite fight, honestly, Georges St-Pierre vs. Carlos Condit, because I just watched it. It was an amazing fight – just so good. I saw UFC 154 with friends and family at my house in Denver, where I’m doing my training camp for my fight in a few weeks.

It was cool because GSP came off that long layoff and a lot of people doubted him, including people I know in the industry. People were saying “His time is up man, I don’t think he can do it anymore” and “What about ring rust?” They were really talking a lot of smack.

As soon as I saw Georges shoot his first shot and his timing was there I was like, “Oh, Carlos is in trouble.” If he would have shot in and his timing was off, then people would have blamed it on Georges having ring rust and would have immediately said he could no longer compete at this level. But as soon as I saw that double-leg I knew he would be fine. And then I was like “Hell yeah!”

Carlos was so game, too. His face was all bloody and he was clapping at the crowd. He was awesome. And then he almost knocked Georges out. He almost gave me a heart attack! When I get nervous I don’t talk, I just sit there. It’s really weird. So I got really quiet and couldn’t talk then I would just clap when Georges did something good.  Carlos really just gave it 110% and I think he earned a lot of people’s respect that night -- he for sure earned my respect.

When GSP came out to California for his rehab we did strength and conditioning at the same place together. I’ve been up to Tristar in Montreal a few times and he has been out to Denver to train a number of times as well.

It’s always great when you can watch one of your friends get a big, important win. Georges is not only a friend to me, but he is also someone I try to model myself after. Georges is the blueprint to be a multiple-time champ in the UFC and I learn a lot from Georges every time I’m around him.

The biggest thing I've learned from Georges is that it’s about grinding and getting better but it’s also about getting rest. You go hard and then when you rest it’s just as important as your training. I now mimic is the way Georges structures his camps. He has it down to a science, so now I do my camps the exact same way he does.

Because of my friendship with Georges and the circumstances of such a long layoff, watching his performance and his domination at UFC 154 was really cool. And I liked Georges’ pre-fight cartwheels, too. I might try some of them myself!

Ray Sefo is not just the president of World Series of Fighting, he’s also a fighter

The World Series of Fighting makes its debut on Saturday night, with headliners Andrei Arlovski and Devin Cole in the main event. But while they prep for the weekend's bouts that will air on NBC Sports Network, they also are thinking ahead to the next fights.

Ray Sefo, a kickboxing legend and the president of WSOF, is considering putting himself on the card.

"Absolutely," he joked while in studio with MMAjunkie.com Radio "It's my promotion."

Sefo said it became much more likely after he fielded offers to fight in New Year's Eve in Japan, as well as in March in Australia. While Sefo's WSOF partners weren't initially keen on the idea, the outside offers changed their minds.

"I think they're realizing if I'm still very active, why not have it in their own league," he said. "We just talked about it [four] days ago, and they were like, 'We should talk about that.'"

Sefo is a true veteran of combat sports. Though he is known for his kickboxing, he has also tried boxing and MMA. He worked at Xtreme Couture for years, helping several fighters shore up their striking. It was Sefo who helped Randy Couture prepare for his bout with boxer James Toney.

And now, it might be Sefo who could be a fighter and promoter for the same show. Do you think this is a good idea? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.

Pascal Krauss colliding with Mike Stumpf at UFC on FOX 6

With UFC on FOX 5 only a few weeks away, the UFC has turned their attention towards the organization’s next appearance on network television by booking bouts for the January 26 effort. The latest tilt added to the show was revealed today in the form of a welterweight match-up between Pascal Krauss and Mike Stumpf.

UFC officials have confirmed the fight’s presence on the preliminary portion of UFC on FOX 6.

Krauss holds an overall record of 10-1, suffering the first loss of his career last May when he fell on the scorecards to John Hathaway. Nine of his wins have involved some form of stoppage including seven by way of submission.

Like Karuss, the 11-3 Stumpf will be looking to get back on the winning track come showtime. Also similar, the 29-year old is a finisher by trade with seven tap-outs and two TKOs to his credit.

UFC on FOX 6 is headlined by a flyweight title-fight between Demetrious Johnson/John Dodson with other planned pairings including Donald Cerrone-Anthony Pettis, Clay Guida-Hatsu Hioki, and Quinton Jackson-Glover Teixeira.

Josh Barnett Fighting Nandor Guelmino at Strikeforce: Champions

Rogers_Barnett_08

While everyone has been running around wondering what is going to become of Strikeforce after Strikeforce: Champions, heavyweight Josh Barnett has been telling anyone who would listen that he would be fighting on the January card. It turns out the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix finalist wasn’t blowing smoke either, as it was revealed today that Barnett (31-6) will be squaring off against Strikeforce newcomer Nandor Guelmino (11-3-1).

Guelmino is riding a seven-fight winning streak, having finished six of his opponents by submission and three by knockout. As of right now it is unclear if Barnett will head back to the UFC after the bout where he first made a name for himself, as the match-up marks his final fight on his Strikeforce contract.

MMAJunkie Reported:

Sources close to the fighters today revealed that  Barnett is targeted to meet fellow heavyweight Nandor Guelmino on the Showtime-televised main card of “Strikeforce: Champions.” The event, which features prelims on Showtime Extreme, takes place Jan. 12 at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City. It’s expected to be Strikeforce’s final event.

Firas Zahabi considers Nick Diaz the #1 contender

Until recently, it seemed the only people who felt UFC welterweight Nick Diaz deserved a shot at champion Georges St-Pierre when he returns to the ring in a few months were members of his camp and the occasional fan or media member. However, Diaz recently received an endorsement from an unlikely individual in the form of GSP’s head trainer, Firas Zahabi.

According to the TriStar MMA chief, Diaz is the preferable option to Johny Hendricks if St-Pierre opts to continue his career as a 170-pounder instead of beefing up for a bout with pound-for-pound king Anderson Silva.

“I think Diaz is the guy who deserves it most,” explained Zahabi in an interview with MMAJunkie. “His fight with Carlos Condit was so close. Who knows? People judge it both ways.”

“(Diaz is) the guy who is the Strikeforce champion. He climbed up the ladder all the way,” he continued. “Johny deserves it very much, but Diaz has been there longer and done more fights and has bigger wins.”

Hendricks (14-1) has won five fights in a row including knockouts of Martin Kampmann and Jon Fitch but lacks the drawing power of the polarizing Diaz. Another factor possibly influencing the matter relates to St-Pierre’s personal dislike of the 26-8 Californian based on a handful of heated exchanges.

Though Zahabi still isn’t sure what St-Pierre’s next move will be, he did confirm the fan-favorite is expected to corner teammate Rory MacDonald next weekend at UFC on FOX 5, giving coach and competitor a chance to sit down and discuss what’s next. And, if it involves defending his welterweight belt, it sounds like Diaz may be the man standing opposite from St-Pierre in the Octagon come showtime.

Chael Sonnen Out to Change Public Perception of TUF

UFC 148 Press Conference

UFC star Chael Sonnen has a ton of respect for fighters who helped pave the road for his present day success. However, he doesn’t feel as though any of MMA’s forefathers had it as tough as the contestants do on the Ultimate Fighter.

The light heavyweight title-contender has become intimately familiar with the reality franchise as a coach on TUF 17, a process in which Sonnen has gained a new level of appreciation for the sacrifices the show’s competitors make in order to pursue their dream.

“When you see the guys that don’t get into the house – when you see the black belts and the champions and the veterans and the flat-out studs with very incredible resumes that did not get into the house – that’s when you’re going to understand how loaded this bracket is. The #1 thing that I’m going to do is we’re going to change the narrative of this show. This is not a frat show, and it is not a reality show. I don’t know how those terms ever got coined. This is a tournament, period.”

“All the way back to the greats – Royce Gracie and Dan Severn and Ken ‘Never Should Have Been in the Octagon in the First Place’ Shamrock – they never went through anything like this. Those guys did a great job. Those guys got me in the sport, the Don Fryes and the ‘Tank’ Abbotts – the real fighters. But it’s nothing like a 32-man tournament. It’s nothing like having to make weight five times, fight five times, have no preparation, not have your coach, not have your team, not sleeping in your own bed – and be expected to win anyway. It’s nothing like that.”

“Somewhere, somebody called this a reality show, and I just don’t get it. So is the Super Bowl. It’s reality, and it’s a show, but I don’t get it. This is real. This is the realest tournament ever. We have a guy that lost his job for taking this opportunity. He’s got a wife and kid, and if he doesn’t win this, he doesn’t know what’s going to happen to him. I could name a few of those stories like that. The sacrifice that these guys are going through to put it all on the line, it’s humbling.”

Four questions that will be answered by UFC Macau

The UFC heads to Macau for fights headlined by Rich Franklin vs. Cung Le. Here's what you need to know before you tune in bright and early on Saturday morning.

Does Rich Franklin have another big fight left in his tank? It's been six years since Franklin had the UFC championship belt around his waist. He isn't likely to make another run at the belt any time soon, but the 38-year-old can show if still is the kind of fighter who can thrill crowds.

Will fans get up to watch the fights? American sports fans aren't beyond waking up early for sports. It happens for the Olympics, for football, and for soccer. Fight fans have woken up fights in Japan for years. However, the UFC doesn't ask fans to wake up early, so these fights will show if fans are willing to get up early.

How the UFC has taken hold in Asia, outside Japan? The UFC did well in Japan in February, but that's a part of the world where mixed martial arts had already taken hold. In Macau, the fights are a short flight away from billions of potential fans, but they'll show on Saturday if the fans thought the fights were worth it.

How you will like the new Octagon Girls? The UFC hired new Octagon Girls from Asia for the fights, and I figured you might like to see them.

Magnus Cedenblad vs Rafael Natal Added to UFC on Fox 6

A middleweight bout between Michael Cedenblad and Rafael Natal has been booked for UFC on Fox 6, which takes place at the United Center in Chicago on January 26.

Cedenblad (10-4) came into the UFC riding a seven-fight win-streak. Unfortunately for the Swede, his run came to an end when he met Francis Carmont at UFC on Fuel TV 2, as “Limitless” scored a rear-naked choke in the second period, forcing “Jycken” to tap. Cedenblad now looks to get his first victory inside the octagon at the expense of Natal.

“Sapo” (14-4-1) is 2-2-1 inside the UFC, most recently having a two-fight run snapped by Andrew Craig in July. In an all out war, Craig was able to knockout the Brazilian in the second round after handily dropping the first. Natal has taken victories over Michael Kuiper and Paul Bradley during his promotional tenure.

UFC on Fox 6 is headlined by the first defense of the newly minted flyweight championship, as Demetrious Johnson looks to hold on to the strap against the surging John Dodson.

Countdown to UFC 154: Kampmann vs. Hendricks

Nate Diaz worried about judges’ decision in fight with Benson Henderson

Nate Diaz is fighting Benson Henderson at UFC on Fox 6, and he has taken the idea "don't leave it in the hands of the judges" to a whole new level. He does not think he can win if it is put in the judges' hands.

"I don't think I've got a chance of winning any type of decision. So I gotta go out there and do what I can do to try and finish my opponent, try to be the better fighter and win the fight," said Diaz said to Inside MMA. "Either way, if it goes to a decision, I'm going to try to be the one outscoring, outpointing and outdoing him."

Winning by a finish is a pretty tough feat for Diaz to accomplish. Henderson has never been knocked out. He lost once by submission and once by a decision. The submission loss was in 2007. Since then, he's been in some tricky spots but hasn't tapped. In both fights against Donald Cerrone and in fighting Jim Miller, Henderson was memorably stuck in positions which seemed close to a submission. But instead of tapping, Henderson would give the thumbs up and went on to win all three fights.

Decisions in bouts with Henderson are also a likely occurrence. His last six fights were decisions, with five ending with Henderson getting his hand raised. Diaz isn't as successful in decisions, so you could see why he might be nervous. Of his seven losses, six are by decision. Only two of his 13 wins came via the judges' card.

Should Diaz be concerned? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Georges St-Pierre: “First and foremost, I have things to do at 170 pounds.”

UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre isn’t opposed to the idea of seeing action against pound-for-pound king Anderson Silva at some point in the future. However, it appears his immediate focus is on taking care of business in his own division before potentially making a move up to face the larger Silva.

While the approach could ultimately cost him millions of dollars and may disappoint countless fans, not to mention his employers, St-Pierre is adamant about pursuing his own interests instead of kowtowing to the demands of others.

“I would like to fight (Silva) too, but after I fight him and win the fight, what happens next? These days, yeah, there’s a lot of money to be made, but I don’t fight for the money. My motivation is to be the best,” stated St-Pierre in an interview with French-Canadian outlet Tout Le Monde en Parle (transcribed by MMAFighting). “So yes, I want the fight, but I want to take it when I decide the time is right, not when he wants the fight to happen.”

“First and foremost, I have things to do at 170 pounds. When I am ready and when I want the fight, that’s when it will happen,” St-Pierre concluded. “I’m not scared of him. It’s just that I will take this fight when it makes sense for me. I just came back from an injury, there’s money to be made, there are fights in my weight class, other challenges out there, and if I fight him, I will have to gain weight, while he will have to lose weight, and then afterwards, I won’t be able to come back to my weight class.”

If St-Pierre sticks to his guns he will likely face Johny Hendricks at some point in the first quarter of 2013. GSP was last seen outpointing Carlos Condit in convincing fashion at UFC 154, picking up his first win since being sidelined with knee injuries since mid-2011.

Former Bellator Signee Mirzaev Released From Prison

Former Bellator prospect Rasul Mirzaev has been released from prison amid calls for peace in the face of ethnic tension in Russia. Mirzaev has been imprisoned since turning himself over to Russian authorities after the death of Russian student Ivan Agafonov. The native of Dagestan plead guilty to a lesser charge and was released yesterday.

Mirzaev was arrested last year after an incident outside a night club in Moscow. The 2011 incident started when an intoxicated Agafonov angered Mirzaev after making a pass at his girlfriend. Mirzaev would argue with the larger man before landing a single short punch that knocked Agafonov to the pavement. The Russian student would suffer a head injury, and seemed to recover at the scene, before his health quickly deteriorated and his friends took him to a local hospital. Agafonov would die a few days later.

Mirzaev turned himself in upon hearing of Agafonov’s death.

The case was delayed several times due to legal maneuvering by both sides and has been complicated by rising ethnic tensions between ethnic Russians and citizens of the southern Russian republics. At one point a national incident had to be avoided, as the heads of the Russian Republic and Republic of Dagestan squared off over the Moscow court’s alleged bias against the fighter.

Former WBA heavyweight champion, and newly elected Russian Parliament member, Nikolai Valuev has appealed for calm in the matter. Insisting this is not a cause for action from angry Russian nationalists.

Said Valuev:

“Hysteria on ethnic grounds around the Mirzaev case has no basis. You shouldn’t fan ethnic hysteria, it’s wrong,” Valuev continued, “Without justifying Rasul Mirzaev in any way, I also remind you that he has fully admitted his guilt and is prepared to bear the punishment the law demands for his deed.”

The “Black Tiger” was once one of the most heralded bantamweight fighters in Russia. With a 2010 Combat SAMBO world title and improving striking, Mirzaev had amassed a 5-0 record that caught the eye of Bellator. The Dagestani fighter had been set to make his promotional debut before the incident but now his MMA future is cloudy at best.

Lyoto Machida no longer upset with Chael Sonnen vs. Jon Jones, focused on Dan Henderson

MachidaLyoto_Wide_1.png

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

The UFC's decision to put Chael Sonnen on The Ultimate Fighter against Jon Jones, with a Title shot at the end of the season, didn't sit well with many fighters. One of those who reacted negatively initially was former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida, but in an interview on Monday on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani this week, he said he's over it.

"At the moment I was a little upset," Machida said. "But it's all good, it's passed. There's always two sides to everything," said Machida. "Looking at it from an athlete's perspective, Chael Sonnen might have cut across a lot of people and maybe cut the line to get a shot at the belt. But for the UFC it might be a good thing for this fight to happen at this time. There's always two sides."

Machida will now turn his attention to Dan Henderson, as the two are expected to meet in February at UFC 157. The fight's still not fully confirmed, but Machida's moving forward with that as the plan.

"This fight is expected to happen but there's no date set," Machida said. "We don't know yet where its going to be or when its going to be, but I'm very happy to be fighting Dan Henderson."

"It's a good fight and its another challenge for me. If I want to fight for the belt again, I need to get through this fight first."

Penick's Analysis: Machida-Henderson is a great light heavyweight fight, and gives both fighters a chance to get into title contention. There's no reason to harp on the Sonnen-Jones fight, as the decision's been made and there's nothing left to do about it. All fighters like Machida and Henderson can do is move forward with their own careers, and worry about winning their own fights.

Former UFC Champ Rashad Evans says he still has a lot of fights left in him, excited to return

EvansRashad_Wide_1.png

"I got a lot of fights left in me. I've still got the competitive edge and that's what it's all about. And I still love the sport enough to want to compete. See? You can love the sport, but if you don't love the sport enough to compete you better get out of there... I'm real excited [to get back into the cage]. I've been learning a lot. You've got some of the best stand-up strikers with Tyrone Spong and Alistair Overeem and those guys and everybody who they bring around for their connection back in Holland, so the stand-up game has just gotten ridiculous. And the ground game, you've got Braulio [Estima] and whoever he brings to train with us and you've got Vitor Belfort...the legend. So, you know, there's a lot of knowledge that's getting passed around the camp."

-Rashad Evans, who is expected to return to the Octagon on Feb. 2 at UFC 156 against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, talks to Pro MMA Now about wanting to continue his fighting career for some time, and being excited to return to action (transcribed by BloodyElbow.com).

Penick's Analysis: The Blackzilians camp haven't had the most successful track record since forming, but they're still a very young camp very much in fluctuation as they find out what works best for them. They're all improving the way they do things just by virtue of being together longer and longer, and they'll continue getting better and finding more success as they continue to work together. The variety of talent they've attracted in South Florida is impressive, and Evans was obviously a key component in getting things started there. His return fight with Nogueira isn't the most thrilling matchup choice for his first fight after a title fight, but it's still a good fight in the light heavyweight division. He clearly wants to continue fighting for some time, but finding the right path for him is going to be the key. He briefly flirted with the idea of a move to middleweight, but considering he wanted a shot at Anderson Silva and there's a backlog of opponents there right now, it's a tough move unless he's going there full time. For now, he's going to go one fight at a time until the right path is revealed.

Chris Weidman out, Costa Phillipou in against Tim Boetsch at UFC 155

According to Newsday, Chris Weidman is out of UFC 155 with an injury. Costa Phillipou, whose UFC 154 bout was canceled at the last minute because of opponent Nick Ring's illness, will step in to fight Tim Boetsch.

Weidman is one of the top contenders at middleweight. He is undefeated, and has recent wins over Demian Maia and Mark Munoz.

This injury is the second blow to Weidman in the past month. His home in Long Island was severely damaged by Hurricane Sandy. Though no one in his family was injured, much of the house was wrecked.

“Mayhem’s” Vandalism Charges Dropped

Jason Mayhem MillerFormer UFC fighter and TV personality Jason “Mayhem” Miller is now free of his misdemeanor vandalism charges stemming from his arrest earlier this year. The charges were dismissed at his Wednesday court appearance according to court records.

Miller was arrested after being found nude in a church by the church’s pastor, who alerted local police after discovering his church vandalized.

“Mayhem” started showing erratic behavior not long after being cut by the UFC earlier this year. This incident – along with a bizarre appearance on The MMA Hour and odd twitter messages – had many of his fans concerned about his well-being. Miller would later admit that he got a carried away with his efforts – ala infamous comedian Andy Kaufman – to promote Here Comes the Boom, which co-starred the Miller.

The California resident will look to get on with his life now that he has retired from MMA and looking to start a new career.

Thiago Silva Tests Positive for Marijuana According to Zuffa Statement

Thiago SilvaThiago Silva has garnered another suspension following his come from behind victory over Stanislov Nedkov at UFC on FUEL 6. Silva has been suspended six months  after testing positive for marijuana. The Brazilian fighter will also enter a treatment plan following the positive test. The announcement was made via a statement from Zuffa.

Zuffa’s statement:

“Thiago Silva tested positive for marijuana metabolites following his bout at UFC on FUEL TV in Macau. The UFC organization has a strict, consistent policy against the use of any illegal and/or performance-enhancing drugs, stimulants or masking agents. Silva has admitted to taking the banned substance and has agreed to participate in an approved drug-rehabilitation program and serve a six-month suspension retroactive to the November 10 event. He must pass a drug test upon completion of the suspension before receiving clearance to fight again.”

Coincidentally, Silva was already medically suspended for six months due to a suspected broken right hand. The suspension will be Silva’s second in his last three fights. Silva was suspended for submitting a false urine sample at UFC 125. The bout’s result will likely be overturned to a “no contest,” leaving the once-promising Brazilian without an official victory since 2009.

UFC welterweight Dong Hyun Kim thinks 90% of MMA fighters use PEDs

MMATorch_Generic_Logo_wide_81.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

"While a lot of people believe doping tests work, just like a breathalyzer test you can get away with it by just controlling timing. Most of the steroids user just cycle and get by the tests. It's almost like other athletes look down on you as an idiot if you don't do steroids. It's like non-users are bicyclists while steroid users are racing with motorcycles. But I am one of those 'idiots' that don't use performance enhancers. I would say 90% of UFC fighters use performance enhancers."

-Korean welterweight Dong Hyun Kim talks to MFight about the performance enhancing drug issue prevalent in MMA (transcribed by MiddleEasy.com).

Penick's Analysis: Kim follows several other fighters in putting a number on the fighters using PEDs in the sport, but it's one of those things that is impossible to quantify accurately. Of course it's out of hand in the sport; the regulations and testing methods are not at all effective at this stage in catching widespread use, and unfortunately it's a system that's easy to get around for many users. It's also not something that's going to stop anytime soon, especially with how behind the drugs the current commission testing is.

Demetrious Johnson’s first title defense will happen at UFC on Fox 6

Chicago will host its first UFC title fight since UFC 90. On "UFC Insider," it was reported flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson will defend his belt for the first time at UFC on Fox 6 on Jan. 26. He'll fight John Dodson at the United Center.

Johnson's last fight was a five-round win over Joseph Benavidez. He'll take on Dodson, a Jackson's MMA-trained winner of "The Ultimate Fighter."

Joining them on the card will be Donald Cerrone and Anthony Pettis. After a long layoff due to surgery and illness, Pettis will fight close to home. The United Center is just 95 miles from Pettis' training home in Milwaukee.

Quinton "Rampage" Jackson also says that he is on the card, though that has not been confirmed:
