Two weeks ago today the MMA world was sent reeling head over heels, not only because of the thrilling war Johny Hendricks and Georges St. Pierre engaged in at UFC 167, but the latter’s revelation he’s taking a break from fighting.
As you likely know, the judges decision (GSP won via split decision) didn’t exactly sit too well with UFC boss man Dana White. Thus, heads were turned when the champ’s mentor Kristof Midoux, relayed to a French Canadian publication that White had allegedly called GSP to tell him he had changed his mind.
“Few people know it, but the next morning he (White) called Georges and told him” I’m sorry, I watched the fight again and you have indeed won. I spoke under the influence of emotion”
Well, not surprisingly, White was asked about Midoux’s comments in a recent interview with MMA Junkie.com. and here’s what the UFC President had to say:
“I have not watched the fight,” White said. “I still haven’t watched the fight. This guy’s like one of the new Kardashian sisters. This guy pops up out of nowhere, and now he’s everywhere.”
Wow. Now that’s a quote. White’s referring to the fact that before St. Pierre’s November 16th scrap with Hendricks, Midoux told La Presse that he believed the champion should retire after UFC 167.
The UFC President has also been taking some heat for saying that the champ should give Hendricks an immediate rematch ASAP, and that GSP’s personal problems are not as serious as he thinks. When asked about the criticism, White said he’s not “forcing” St. Pierre to do anything, but that the renowned fighter is obligated to defend the belt.
White also noted that St. Pierre isn’t long removed from a year plus break due to ACL surgery, and that he doesn’t give a “s–t” about people’s opinions. No surprises there.
