UFC 167: White Hopes Koscheck Keeps Fighting Despite Latest Loss

Josh Koscheck made it clear heading into last night’s UFC 167 card that he was hoping to make a “statement” by defeating Tyron Woodley, and demonstrate he remains one of the planet’s top welterweights. Not only did the accomplished fighter lose to Woodley, however, he was knocked out by the powerful Strikeforce vet in the opening round.

So considering the 35 year-old Koscheck has lost three straight and is coming off back-to-back stoppage losses (the other was to Robbie Lawler in February), could the TUF 1 vet’s roster spot be in jeopardy? Well, based off comments UFC President Dana White made following the event, it sounds like that’s up to Koscheck (quotes via MMA Junkie.com):

“Josh sent me a huge text (after the fight), and his text sounded a little bit like retirement,” White said. “I don’t ever mess with guys when they talk about retirement, but it might be a little premature for Josh, too.”

“I think Josh is still one of the most talented guys out there,” White noted. “He fought a beast who was ready to go tonight. Josh hurt him tonight. Josh hurt him. I love Koscheck. I love that kid. I love the way he fights, I love his attitude. The guy gets booed out of the arena every time he comes in, but he still goes in and fights his ass off. He’s a tough kid. When you’re standing in the octagon and you look across, you know you’re in for a fight.”

While Koscheck may be a ways out of another title shot, it should be noted that it was just last May when he battled Johny Hendricks and lost via split decision. So, in other words, the fighter likely still has some big performances left in him yet.

As far as Koscheck making any comments publicly about his future, as of Sunday AM, all he had tweeted was “Nice job tonight @TWooodley you are fast…”
