UFC 161: Evans Vs Henderson Media Conference Call (Updates: 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT)

John Petit

The UFC 161 conference call should be an interesting one as the UFC’s first trip to Winnipeg has been marred with injury after injury. Both the main event and the co main event fell apart only weeks ahead of the card, but its all hands on deck and the UFC is moving forward with an 11 bout fight card headlined by former Light Heavyweight Champion Rashad Evans and former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Dan Henderson. UFC Director of Operations Tom Wright will be on the call representing the UFC, and all the fighters below are expected to be on the call fielding questions. We will be bringing you updates of the call below starting at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT.

LIVE UPDATES:

Tom Wright, Director of Operations, Canada, Australia & New Zealand

-Everyone knows that injuries happen. We have champions on the card, and I am confident that the fighters will put on a great show, and the fans won’t be disappointed.

-Dana and Joe Silva made the call on removing Shogun from the card.

-I can’t confirm there was a Visa issue.

Rashad Evans, Former light heavyweight champion

-The title shot isn’t on my mind. I’m not caring about the title shot  right now.

-I’m feeling no pressure moving up to the main event.

-I have addressed the issues of what I felt went wrong, and I need to remember not to second guess myself. I’m ready to put on the fight that I trained for.

-You definitely want to get the  monkey off your back when you stink up the joint. I want to put on a show for the fans, but for myself. I can’t live with disappointing myself.

Dan Henderson, light heavyweight

-A title was something that was supposed to happen last year, and I think I have unfinished business with Jon Jones. Im focused on this fight. He is tough and I’m focused on him.

-I didn’t get to check out Winnipeg when I was there last time, it was too cold.

-Lyoto is a different kind of fighter, and I know I could have done better. However, its hard to fight a guy who doesn’t want to fight you.  I don’t think it will play a role in this fight.

Roy Nelson, heavyweight

-I wish I had  more time to prepare, but sometimes you have to do things for the company.

-People in our sport tend to abuse performance enhancing drugs. That’s why I don’t look like a typical UFC fighter.

-I think anyone in the UFC is at the top of the food chain, anyone of the heavyweights can be champions.

-On any given day, I can knock anyone out.

-I got offered Daniel Cormier, but he turned it down.

Stipe Miocic, heavyweight

-He is a super tough guy, and I need to stick to my game plan.

UFC 161: Evans Vs Henderson takes place on June 15 at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. In the main event, Former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Rashad Evans will take on former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Dan Henderson in a three round affair. UFC 161 will be the first time the UFC has held an event in Winnipeg.
