Cain Velasquez Preferred Dominant Decision Win to Quick Knockout

Cain Velasquez v Junior dos Santos - UFC 155

In most cases it seems as though fighters are happy to get in the cage and get out as quickly as possible, aiming for a fast finish rather than a drawn out duel. However, UFC heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez was more than pleased with the ability to pummel former title-holder Junior dos Santos over a five-round period at UFC 155 rather than put him away in the bout’s opening rounds.

The elated Velasquez recently spoke about the situation where he explained his rationale, also admitting even he was surprised “Cigano” was able to survive as long as he did.

“I’m kind of glad we didn’t get that knockout in the first round cause then (fans) would have been like, ‘Oh, well Cain knocked him out in the first round…HE caught HIM.’ At least we got to do the whole five rounds where I won every round,”

“For a split second I did. There just wasn’t enough power in those punches on the ground so I was like, ‘Ah, he’s gonna recover. That’s fine. I’ll just soften him up.’”
