The “Bellator MMA: Chandler vs Hawn” prelims aired on Spike.comLive from the UCI Bren Center in Irvine, California. The card saw a myriad of action exciting bouts coupled with devastating knockouts and several unorthodox submissions. The preliminary portion also housed the first light heavyweight tournament quarterfinal of the promotion’s eighth season.
After an all out war in the opening stanza of the evening’s that left Atanas Djambazov exhausted, Emanuel Newton submitted his Bulgarian foe in the second period. Both men swung for the fences early on, but it was The Bodyshop product that had the wherewithal to keep going after the first five minutes. After being thrown to the mat and giving up position, Djambazov turned his back and gave up the choke, which Newton happily accepted, securing it with no hooks and forcing the tap at 2:21 of the second round.
In other action, J.J. Ambrose broke Brian Warren, tagging “Mr. Unbreakable” through the duration of the first round, including putting him on his seat with a hard shot. After winning the opening frame convincingly, “Superman” would sink a guillotine early in the second, bringing the welterweight bout to a halt at 50 seconds of the round.
Aaron MIller dominated Joe Camacho from bell-to-bell in their featherweight bout at the UCI Center. “Blood Spiller” was able to take his opponent down, seemingly at will, and keep him there for the fight’s duration. In the end, the Hacienda Heights native would have his hand raised when the judges rendered a unanimous 30-27 in his favor.
Jason Lambert and Hector Ramirez opened up their light heavweight bout looking for the kill, but it was on the mat where things would be decided as “The Punisher” would lock up a triangle choke and transition a straight armbar, forcing Ramirez to submit at 3:59.
Savant Young weathered a storm in the shape of Mike Guymon to earn an impressive victory. After spending the majority of the first period being controlled by “The Joker,” the Pasadena native came out full of piss and vinegar in the second stanza, winging his hooks at the UFC veteran. “Black Superman” finally connected with brutal right hand, which put Guymon out at 48 seconds of the second
In a welterweight tilt, Joe Williams took a controversial finish over Ultimate Fighter veteran Jamie Yager. “The Chosyn 1″ was unable to keep Williams away form his body, and eventually found himself bellydown on the mat. “Mongo” would go on to beat Yager about the head until referee John McCarthy called the bout at 4:02, at which point the Kings MMa product immediately protested.
Cleber Lucero took a one-sided unanimous decision over Mario Navarro in the evening’s featherweight opening bout, dominating “Handome” positionally for the duration of the fight. While Navarro was clearly frustrated, he was unable to defend the takedown, putting him on the short end of a unanimous 30-27 from the judge’ table.
