White Denies GSP Mentor’s Phone Call Claim

Two weeks ago today the MMA world was sent reeling head over heels, not only because of the thrilling war Johny Hendricks and Georges St. Pierre engaged in at UFC 167, but the latter’s revelation he’s taking a break from fighting.

As you likely know, the judges decision (GSP won via split decision) didn’t exactly sit too well with UFC boss man Dana White. Thus, heads were turned when the champ’s mentor Kristof Midoux, relayed to a French Canadian publication that White had allegedly called GSP to tell him he had changed his mind.

“Few people know it, but the next morning he (White) called Georges and told him” I’m sorry, I watched the fight again and you have indeed won. I spoke under the influence of emotion”

Well, not surprisingly, White was asked about Midoux’s comments in a recent interview with MMA Junkie.com. and here’s what the UFC President had to say:

“I have not watched the fight,” White said. “I still haven’t watched the fight. This guy’s like one of the new Kardashian sisters. This guy pops up out of nowhere, and now he’s everywhere.”

Wow. Now that’s a quote. White’s referring to the fact that before St. Pierre’s November 16th scrap with Hendricks, Midoux told La Presse that he believed the champion should retire after UFC 167.

The UFC President has also been taking some heat for saying that the champ should give Hendricks an immediate rematch ASAP, and that GSP’s personal problems are not as serious as he thinks. When asked about the criticism, White said he’s not “forcing” St. Pierre to do anything, but that the renowned fighter is obligated to defend the belt.

White also noted that St. Pierre isn’t long removed from a year plus break due to ACL surgery, and that he doesn’t give a “s–t” about people’s opinions. No surprises there.

Jessica Rakoczy Arrives, Right on Time

This really isn’t how anyone expected things to go for Jessica Rakoczy. If anything, stardom for the Ontario native should have taken place years ago, when she was winning title after title, beating the best opposition available in the world of boxing. But to see her finally getting the recognition she’s deserved at the age of 36, and not in boxing, but in mixed martial arts, has been nothing short of remarkable, as well as a testament to the power of persistence.Making her UFC debut on Saturday in the Ultimate Fighter season 18 final against Julianna Pena, Rakoczy’s combat sports success was ... Raquel Pennington Finds Her Place

Raquel Pennington readily admits that her family “always had their hands full” with her. Not in a bad way, mind you, but when it came to sports, let’s just say she didn’t dabble. She reels off the sports she participated in: basketball, softball, volleyball, cross country, swimming, and gymnastics, pointing out that her dream was to play in the WNBA. Oh yeah, and she wanted – and still wants – to become a doctor. But when she found out that her best friend’s father was teaching his kids the sweet science of boxing, that’s when her mother had to draw the line.“My mom said ‘you must be insane. Yo ... UFC’s Johny Hendricks may be out for six months

UFC welterweight challenger Johny Hendricks' bad luck continues as his right knee may keep him out of action for six months. MMA Weekly reports that Nevada has released its medical suspension list of UFC 167 fighters.

Saturday night Johny Hendricks lost a controversial split decision to UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre. UFC president Dana White railed against the decision and said he was confident that St. Pierre and Hendricks would soon rematch, despite GSP's vague announcement that he was stepping away from competition for some time.

However, Hendricks' right knee may be another impediment to his getting another shot at UFC gold. Nevada's medical suspension of Hendricks mandates that the fighter "must have orthopedic clearance on right knee or no contest until 05/17/14; minimum suspension no contest until 12/17/13, no contact until 12/08/13."

That is to say that unless Hendricks has an orthopedic doctor clear him earlier, he would not be licensed to fight again until May 17 of next year. Hendricks is not allowed to do contact training until Dec. 8 under the suspension.

St. Pierre has been medically suspended until Jan. 1 and he is not allowed to have contact training until Dec. 17. We will keep you posted with updates on both Hendricks' and St. Pierre's recoveries as news becomes available.

Do you think Hendricks' injured knee buys Dana White enough time to convince St. Pierre to fight again and to rematch the challenger? Let us know in the comments section.

UFC Fight Night 35 in Georgia adds Amagov-High, Nijem-Edwards, and Houston-Smith

Octagon_photo_wide_111.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

The UFC has announced a trio of new fights for their UFC Fight Night 35 event on Fox Sports 1, coming on January 15 to Duluth, Georgia.

The latest additions to the card are a welterweight bout between Adlan Amagov and Jason High, a lightweight fight between TUF 13 competitors Ramsey Nijem and Justin Edwards, and a middleweight fight between Brian Houston and Trevor Smith.

Amagov had an eleven fight unbeaten streak snapped in 2012 when he was knocked out by Robbie Lawler, but he's turned around with three straight wins since then. That includes both of his appearances in the UFC, most recently picking up a first round knockout win over T.J. Waldburger at UFC 166 in October.

High has picked up two straight wins himself in the UFC, bouncing back from a short notice loss to Erick Silva at UFC on Fuel 10. He submitted James Head in August at UFC Fight Night 27, then scored a decision win over Anthony Lapsley last week at UFC 167.

Nijem and Edwards were teammates under Junior dos Santos during their time on TUF, with Nijem ultimately coming in as the runner-up that season. After a winning three straight fights following his loss to Tony Ferguson, Nijem has lost two straight, and has been stopped in them both. Edwards, meanwhile, is dropping to lightweight after a quick and brutal loss to Brandon Thatch at UFC Fight Night 27 in August.

Finally, Houston and Smith both need wins as well after losses in their respective UFC debuts. Smith dropped a decision to Ed Herman back in July, while Houston was submitted by Derek Brunson earlier this month.

UFC Fight Night 35 will be headlined by a middleweight bout between former Strikeforce Champ Luke Rockhold and Costa Philippou.

Penick's Analysis: Nijem-Edwards and Houston-Smith seem like "win or you're gone" fights for all involved, but Amagov-High could be a lot of fun. High has some very good ground skills, while Amagov is capable of some very exciting and violent outbursts on the feet. It's a nice stylistic matchup and should be a fun fight for a Wednesday night Fox Sports 1 card.

Conor McGregor and Diego Sanchez Exchange Insults on Twitter

UFC Conor McGregor

The war of words is heating up between UFC stars Conor McGregor (pictured) and Diego Sanchez. Good thing they’re both sitting behind computer monitors flinging their insults, otherwise this could get really nasty.

McGregor will be sitting the sidelines until at least next June with a torn ACL, but that hasn’t stopped fighters from requesting a tango with Dana White’s latest golden boy. Sanchez took to Twitter again on Tuesday to call out “Notorious.”

And of course, McGregor, who has plenty of time on his hands, was quick to respond.

Sanchez: @TheNotoriousMMA @danawhite I’m up next in Dallas Texas in March let me know if you want to get #KTFO ? Your all talk #challengeisout

Sanchez: @TheNotoriousMMA @danawhite see talks s*** but when the challenge is laid out he crawls back into his little shell. #dallas #letsdoit

McGregor: @DiegoSanchezUFC @danawhite You brain dead, stuttering fool. Read the fine print. And put your bib on so you don’t drool on my tweets.

McGregor: @DiegoSanchez UFC Only reason you haven’t been cut 2 Bellator, with the other has-beens, is because you defend shots with your nose. 0-4 #CUT

McGregor: @DiegoSanchezUFC My comeback fight will be Dublin next year. Its a done deal. McGregor Vs Sanchez. Ireland Vs Mexico. @danawhite Lets do it.

Although it hasn’t been officially announced, it appears Sanchez is expecting to perform when the UFC returns to Texas in March. It has been rumored the UFC won’t host another show in Ireland until hometown hero McGregor can star in it, which won’t be until the summer of 2014.

If that’s the case, Sanchez will likely meet a different opponent in the Lone Star State, and if he’s victorious, could get his wish to face McGregor shortly after.

UFC on FOX 10 takes place Jan. 25 at Chicago’s United Center. The main card airs on FOX following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and MMAjunkie.

Krauss vs. Khaliev is likely to be part of the prelims.

Krauss looks to get his UFC record above .500 following a 2-2 run in the organization, which included a recent knockout loss to Hyun Gyu Lim that earned both competitors “Fight of the Night” bonuses at UFC 164. The German submission specialist and current Roufusport fighter also earned a “Fight of the Night” bonus in his UFC-debut win over Mark Scanlon in 2010.

He now takes on Khaliev, who garnered some attention in 2011 with his tornado-kick knockout of Alexei Belyaev (see below). It was one of four first-round stoppages that launched the former sambo and kickboxing champion’s pro MMA career in late 2011. Most recently, the former middleweight earned a decision victory over Magomed Magomedkerimov (7-2 at the time).

Dana White announces UFC plans to add second women’s division

For years, UFC president Dana White dismissed calls to include women in the world's top MMA promotion saying that neither the talent nor the fan demand existed to make the idea viable. Then, Ronda Rousey happened.

As the UFC absorbed the now defunct Strikeforce promotion and many of its fighters, they decided to include its women's 135 pound division and champion Rousey, a former Olympic judo medalist. Rousey has proven to be a resounding success, inside the Octagon as well as outside of it with the additional attention she's brought the UFC.

As the 18th season of The Ultimate Fighter, where Rousey and rival Miesha Tate coached men and women bantamweights opposite one another, nears it's conclusion, it has become clear that fight fans don't just want to watch "Rowdy" Ronda fight but rather that they enjoy watching women fight, generally. Oftentimes, much more so than they watch the men fight.

Episodes that have featured women's fights on TUF 18 have drawn significantly higher ratings than episodes that featured the men fight. Dana White has evidently seen the light when it comes to women's MMA and Friday announced that the UFC has plans to add a second women's weight class.

“We’re actually working on bringing in another division for the women, which I said wouldn’t happen for a long time,” White said during an interview on the Friday & The Kid podcast.

White went on to say that the new weight class will be 115 pounds. The UFC boss said he's pleasantly surprised at how much women's MMA has caught on with the public.

“There’s a lot of other women’s sports that people don’t care about and people don’t follow,” White said.

“On The Ultimate Fighter right now that’s airing, the women are outrating the men. When the women fight, the ratings are up 44 percent.

“I never in a million years thought it would take off the way it has."

Have you been watching The Ultimate Fighter season 18, and what do you think of the UFC's decision to add more women to its roster? Let us know in the comments section.

Fighter drug tests come back clean from UFC 167

Heading into UFC 167, drug testing was a hot topic thanks to an incoherent series of spats, negotiations and thinly veiled allegations between welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and challenger Johny Hendricks. In the end, they and every other fighter that competed on the UFC 167 card were tested by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC).

Today, NSAC executive director Keith Kizer told Cagewriter via email that all 24 post-fight fighter tests from UFC 167 have come back clean. the NSAC tests for a host of performance-enhancing and recreational substances as well as some banned over the counter products.

We're sure this won't stop the ceaseless speculation around the sport's top fighters for long but it may quiet the the hubub for at least a short while. We suppose there's plenty controversy from the main event's decision and fall-out from St. Pierre's vague post-fight announcement to take everyone's attention away from drugs for a bit.

Inside the camps of Georges St. Pierre & Johny Hendricks – UFC Primetime Episode 2 (VIDEO)

First, the bad news - Lil Johny Hendricks does not make an encore appearance on episode two of UFC Primetime: St. Pierre vs. Hendricks. The good news is that there's still plenty of behind the scenes footage of both the champion and challenger's training camps.

UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre defends his title against Johny Hendricks Nov. 16 at UFC 167. If you missed the first episode, click here.

Episode two starts of with St. Pierre and his head coach Firas Zihabi attempting to dispel the retirement rumors that they essentially started themselves. "I just bought an Octagon," St. Pierre attests.

"If I wanted to retire I wouldn't have invested that type of money. I love my every day routine."

In this episode of UFC Primetime, we also get a look at the Hendricks household and see the husband and father that also inhabits the KO artist body of Johny Hendricks. One of the more interesting parts of episode two for us was the time spent with St. Pierre's head coach Zihabi.

Up to this point, not much has been made known about the young trainer other than the great success of his fighters. In this episode we learn how and why Zihabi made the transition from promising amateur Muay Thai fighter to full time coach.

All this plus a glimpse of St. Pierre's boxing training and Hendricks' strength and conditioning regimen and much more in the video above. One more episode to go and then, of course, the main event title clash on Nov. 16 at UFC 167.

Gray Maynard is one of the world’s best lightweights, but faces a must-win bout versus Nate Diaz

LAS VEGAS -- It's hard to tag a bout a must-win for a fighter who is 11-2-1 and has beaten some of the best fighters in the world. But if Gray Maynard wants to remain remotely in contention for the UFC lightweight title, then he has no other choice but to defeat Nate Diaz when they meet on Saturday in The Ultimate Fighter 18 finale at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

Maynard's record is magnificent, and he was seconds away from having Dana White wrap the lightweight belt around his waist on New Year's Day 2011, when he knocked champion Frankie Edgar down three times in the first round of their bout at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas.

But Maynard is just 1-2-1 in his last four fights and a loss to Diaz on Saturday would literally mean a year or more climb back to relevancy in the division.

The fighters are so evenly matched at the highest levels of the division that losses take on a lot more meaning. A series of losses can be a killer to one's title hopes.

Maynard not only hopes to win a rubber match with Diaz -- He lost to Diaz during Season 5 of The Ultimate Fighter, then defeated him in 2010 in a closely fought rematch -- but to snap out of a recent doldrums.

He drew with Edgar on that memorable 2011 bout, one of the greatest matches in UFC history. He then was knocked out by Edgar in a rematch, eked out a close decision over Clay Guida in a terrible fight and then was knocked out by T.J. Grant in a title eliminator bout at UFC 160 on May 25.

Maynard is ranked fifth in the UFC's lightweight division and Diaz is eighth, but if he loses, it's impossible to see how he fights his way back into contention in a year.

The four contenders ranked above him -- No. 1 Benson Henderson, No. 2 Gilbert Melendez, No. 3 Grant and No. 4 Josh Thomson -- are a combined 22-3 in their most recent bouts.

So much is at stake for Maynard, who by any measure is one of the division's greats. But for a title shot to remain realistic, he has no choice but to defeat Diaz on Saturday. And it wouldn't hurt a bit if he were to look good doing it.

Ilir Latifi gets second UFC bout, meets Cyrille Diabate on UFC Fight Night card in London in March

MMATorch_Generic_Logo_wide_215.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Almost a year after making his UFC debut on a week's notice in the main event at UFC on Fuel 9, Ilir Latifi will get his second bout in the Octagon this March.

The UFC announced on Thursday morning that Latifi will take on Cyrille Diabate at a UFC Fight Night event on March 8 in London, which is headlined by the light heavyweight bout between Alexander Gustafsson and Jimi Manuwa.

It was Gustafsson whom Latifi replaced on that UFC on Fuel 9 event in Sweden, as Gustafsson was ruled medically ineligible to compete after suffering a cut in training the week before the fight. A teammate of Gustafsson, Latifi stepped in to face Gegard Mousasi, losing a decision.

Diabate has appeared seven times now inside the Octagon, posting a 4-3 mark in that time. He was defeated by Manuwa in his last outing, a TKO loss due to injury after the first round of their bout in London in February.

What We’re Thankful For 2013: Cagewriter

With Thanksgiving upon us, each Yahoo Sports blog is taking stock of what they're thankful for while also providing menu suggestions and a sport-specific viewing guide for when you hit your couch. Share what you're thankful for on Twitter with the #YSBThanks hashtag or in the comments below. Have a safe and happy holiday!

Elias Cepeda, Cagewriter editor

The fight fan in me is especially thankful for five things this Thanksgiving. Check out our list and let us know yours in the comments section!

The UFC making it past 20 years: Long before the UFC was able to hold two events in a single week, on separate continents, as it does now, MMA fans were lucky to get a UFC card more than once every other month. In the dark days, MMA fans had to make friends with the one guy in the gym who had a satellite because UFC pay-per-views were banned from cable.

Those who wanted to check out Pride events from Japan often had to wait until Sunday mornings to wade in the legally dubious waters of sites like Daily Motion to watch bootlegged copies of fights that were uploaded by nerds for other geeks (not that I'd know anything about that). This was an especially tough pill to swallow since top boxing had essentially been phased out of the mainstream years ago in the shadow of the big but short-lived pay-per-view dollars.

Now, because of the UFC more than any other fight promotion, quality fights are readily available either live or previously recorded every day all over the world. You can keep your Detroit Lions stinking up the joint on Thanksgiving day. I’ll be watching fight tapes while stuffing my face on Thursday.

UFC matchmaking: For well over a decade now, the UFC has had the best matchmaking in all of fight sports. Part of that is due to the talent of matchmakers Joe Silva and Sean Shelby in the UFC and part of it is because the UFC is now home to most of the top talent in the MMA world.

The downside of UFC hegemony is that fighters don’t have the same options they used to when they could decide between fighting in the UFC, Strikeforce, Pride or other high-paying promotions. An upside to the UFC being the lone survivor among top MMA promotions is that UFC brass usually has the ability to make the fights that fans want to see.

How long have we been waiting to see Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight Manny Pacquiao? Chances are we’ll all keep waiting until either we or Mayweather and Pac are in wheelchairs.

If Manny and Floyd were MMA fighters, they’d likely be fighting in the UFC instead of for warring promotions and cable networks. There’s no way that Dana White would let that type of fight pass him by.

Inter-weight division super fights are another matter, but it is rare that the best fighters in the same division get away without fighting one another in the UFC.

UFC champions thinking for themselves: This may sound contradictory to the prior point but I’m very thankful that at least a select few UFC fighters are now beginning to have some leverage and autonomy in their careers. UFC president Dana White has lamented the loss of total and complete control over his fighters as they’ve grown richer and more famous.

Too bad for him. And, if we have to wait longer for our favorite gladiator to suit back up because he or she needs a rest, too bad for us.

When Jon Jones, one of the most active top challengers and champions in UFC history, decides that he’d rather heal up some leg injuries and not rush into another fight just because White thinks he could make money with “Bones” headlining a Super Bowl weekend card, he should have that right.

Nike, Gatorade and many other large companies sponsor Jones now. Georges St. Pierre and Anderson Silva also enjoy global fame and blue-chip endorsement deals.

It is no coincidence that these three have all recently drawn the ire of White.

Fighters like Jones, Silva and St. Pierre are not as desperate for their next UFC fight purse as champions of the past were so they are able to better consider what is best for their health.

Accessibility of MMA personalities: I’m often asked who my favorite fighter to interview is. That’s hard to answer but any answer would start with whoever is the most accessible and conversation-friendly. In MMA, there’s a lot of such fighters, coaches and promoters to choose from.

For the most part, those in the MMA business that fans want to hear from are easy to get ahold of, are open and honest in conversation and don’t suffer from the same inhibiting suspicion that more established celebrities in society do. That makes for insightful and inside coverage for fight fans of their favorite athletes.

Of course, as MMA grows in popularity, the tabloid idiots will continue to come out of the wood work. The more often fighters are accosted at airports and asked to comment on baby and family health rumors, the more guarded they will become.

For now, all of us covering MMA should be thankful for all that we get.

Women in UFC: The finale of the first ever Ultimate Fighter season (TUF 18) to feature women is coming up on Saturday. On TUF 18, the women on the cast were the best and most watched fighters.

Those women proved what Dana White has already admitted – that he was wrong for so many years in thinking that the interest and talent was not sufficient for the UFC to have women’s divisions. At least the UFC caught on eventually.

Now, the organization has plans to create a second division for women, at 115 pounds. This decision could help pave the way for a men’s 115 pound category and help with international expansion. The UFC has it’s sights set on Mexico and the Philippines, for example.

Try expanding your product there without having lighter weight classes. Ain’t gonna happen.

The Cagewriter Thanksgiving menu for the MMA Wannabe/Fan:

  • Plenty of lean turkey for protein. Plenty more not so lean gravy because, bulking
  • Whatever disgusting "energy" drink that was advertised ad nauseum the last time you watched The Ultimate Fighter. Nothing says healthy like jitter-inducing stimulants and artificial dyes and sweeteners. Drink what the pros get paid to pretend they drink!
  • TRT injections, which are totally cool because we've got a doctor we pay to say it's ok telling us it's ok and we've got a therapeutic use exemption for them. We can't be expected to stuff our faces at the Thanksgiving table at the same pace as these young guys do. We'd practically be at a disadvantage if we didn't use these drugs.

The 2013 Cagewriter Thanksgiving UFC viewing guide:

There's plenty UFC television programming to help you turn into a pumpkin on your couch while you gorge yourself on pumpkin pie this Thanksgiving. All times in Eastern Standard Time.

MMA in NY: The Fight Continues

NEW YORK, November 21 – Let’s not mince words here. It’s now at the point where the refusal of New York politicians to sanction mixed martial arts in their state is simply laughable. With 49 states already sanctioning the sport, with New York in dire need of the financial boost a UFC event would bring, and with the fans, fighters, and a good number of the aforementioned politicians eager to see MMA in places like the site of a Thursday press conference discussing the issue – Madison Square Garden – it baffles the mind that this hasn’t been done yet.“If you would have asked me back then, what d ... ROUNDTABLE: Will UFC Champ Jon Jones will follow through on retirement by 30?

JonesJon_Wide_56.png

Do you think Jon Jones will actually follow through with retirement at 30? What would you like to see from him before then?

RICH HANSEN, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

I don't think I can answer what he "will do," what with me not having a crystal ball or Biff Tanner's betting guide that he stole from Marty McFly. I can answer what I would do in his shoes, and I can guess as to what he might do. But that's all it would be; just a random guess from someone who knows more or less than you know. I'm not willing to bullshit an answer and pretend it has any credibility whatsoever. But, to answer the two things I said I am able to do...

If I were in his shoes, I would soooooo be retired an lounging in front of a pool, bitching at the cabana girl about the bartenders trying to make me a daiquiri with sour mix.

Fight? What, me fight? Trade punches with Cain Velasquez? Ain't enough daiquiris in the world, mi amigo.

Of course gentle reader, all of the fluff above is a dodge, because I don't want to guess what Jones is going to do when he turns 30. I'm comfortable saying this much, though; the more often Floyd Mayweather makes $35,000,000 per fight, the less motivated Jones is going to be to make 10%-20% that amount per fight. Point being, if his salary grows exponentially, so will the target date for his eventual retirement.

FRANK HYDEN, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

No, I don't think he retires at 30, though I think it won't be much longer after that when he actually does. I see him fighting until 32, 33, something like that. It does also depend on how much damage he takes in his fights up until then. If he goes through a bunch of wars, he'll be ready to retire sooner rather than later. I just want to see Jones keep fighting the way he has. If he wants to move to heavyweight, great. If not, great. He should do what he wants, whatever satisfies him as an athlete.

BRAD WALKER, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

If he's still performing at his peak no way in hell. He's shown himself to be a bit of a cocky guy who likes the lifestyle (See: Bentley), but if his skills slide or he suffers a nasty injury sure, he could walk away at a young age. However, the guys he has said he looks up to kept themselves at a high level well into their 30s and beyond, so I don't believe it for a second, Jones is a lifer.

CAMERON LYMAN, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

I absolutely do. Jon has the look and charisma to transcend MMA stardom. But before he goes, I want to see him win the heavyweight belt. That is really the only left for him to accomplish.

JAMIE PENICK, MMATORCH EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

It really does come down to how satisfied Jones feels in fighting by that point. He's been fighting for five years, by 30 it will be a solid nine to ten years in the sport, so it's not as if he'll be leaving anything on the table. Jones has been so good so quickly that he's just an absolutely unique story in this sport. If he feels he's accomplished everything he can by 30, I think he will walk away, as he seems like the type of person who will be able to move on to something else and not be stuck in one thing forever. Many fighters only have this sport and no other options for them to make that type of money, whereas Jones is going to have more and more things open up to him by the time he hits 30. Enjoy watching him while you can, because there's every reason to believe he's serious in this desire to leave by 30.

Vitor Belfort thinks his best is yet to come into likely UFC title bout in 2014

Vitor_Belfort_wide_30.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

"I don't create expectations because I can get frustrated in the end. I've earned my shot at the title and I will fight whoever wins this fight. I just want to get in there and hear them say 'the new middleweight champion.' I have a goal. I will defeat the champion and get the title.

I'll be even better when I return to the Octagon. I know it's hard to believe that I can get even better than this, but I will. I've been training hard, and there are a lot of things that I haven't done yet. My best is yet to come."

-Vitor Belfort talks to MMAFighting.com about his expectations for 2014 in what will likely be a title bout in his next fight.

Penick's Analysis: Belfort's certainly better now than he's ever been, and he's in a spot where he might legitimately have a shot at capturing the UFC Middleweight Championship. He's a lot more confident in his striking than he'd been in the past, and he's not hesitating when he engages. That had gotten to be a mental issue for him at one point, but he's broken out of that mindset this year especially, and enters a new year in a very comfortable spot.

The UFC really is planning a 115 lb female division

http://middleeasy.com/fighting/item/...emale-division

He said it would never happen, and it has. No, not Fedor being signed to the UFC. I think Dan Henderson firmly ensured that wouldn’t happen. I’m talking about women competing inside the Octagon. The UFC introduced a women’s division at 135lbs back in December 2012 and while it’s been pretty awesome so far, we’ve seen a number of women fighting far above their normal fighting weight in order to compete in the UFC which is admirable but not really ideal.

Look, we know it would be awesome to see the female Cyborg in the UFC but the most stacked divisions are at 135lbs and below. You’d be forgiven for expecting a 125lb division to be the next addition but no, Dana exclusively told “The Fighter and the Kid” podcast that the next addition to the UFC would be a 115lb women’s division.

“I’ll give you guys something nobody knows yet. We’re actually working on bringing in another division for the women, which I said would never happen for a long time,”

When asked if it would be 125lbs or 145lbs Dana replied

“Neither . . . 115 pounds”

That means we will most likely see some of the most exciting female talent in all of MMA inside the UFC and Dana will be competing head to head with Invicta and Shannon Knapp. Whatever happens, I’m just excited about the prospect of seeing Jo Calderwood in the UFC.

Donald Cerrone and Adriano Martins Verbally Agree to Fight at UFC on Fox 10

http://www.mmaweekly.com/donald-cerr...-ufc-on-fox-10

A lightweight fight between Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and Adriano Martins has been verbally agreed to for UFC on Fox 10 on Jan. 25, UFC officials announced on Saturday.

The Cerrone-Martins bout is added to the developing fight card, which will take place in Chicago at the city’s United Center.

Cerrone (21-6, 1 N.C.) is just a week out from finishing Evan Dunham at UFC 167 last weekend in Las Vegas. “Cowboy” slapped on a triangle choke to finish Dunham in the second round of their bout.

Martins (25-6) is relatively new to the UFC, but has over 3o professional fights to his credit. In his last fight, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist showed off his best attributes by finishing Daron Cruickshank with a straight armbar in the second round of their UFC Fight Night 32 bout.

UFC on Fox 10 is headlined by a lightweight fight between former UFC champ Benson Henderson and former Strikeforce champ Josh Thomson.

UFC lightweight champ Anthony Pettis tears PCL, surgery and long layoff likely

UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis recently pulled out of his first scheduled title defense against Josh Thomson because of an injured knee. Now, he is closer to knowing the full extent of his injury and the prognosis isn’t good.

A report from Wednesday night’s UFC Tonight television program said that Pettis has suffered a torn PCL in his knee and that three separate doctors have recommended a surgery that could keep the champion out of commission for half a year. “Showtime” is reportedly going to seek the opinion of a fourth doctor to see if he can avoid surgery and have continued physical therapy completely heal his hurt knee.

If Pettis decides to go the strictly physical therapy route, he could finish that rehabilitation in eight weeks. However, Pettis already has tried rehab on the knee – which was injured twice this past summer - and recently re-injured it on his first day back in training.

The fighter told UFC Tonight reporter Ariel Helwani that if the fourth doctor also recommends surgery to repair his knee, he will get the procedure done. UFC president Dana White said that Pettis will “definitely” need to have his knee operated on during a recent interview.

We will keep you informed as this story continues to develop.

Payout Perspective: Pacquiao-Rios

Welcome to a special edition of Payout Perspective where we take a look at the return of Manny Pacquiao as he took on Brandon Rios at the Venetian Hotel on the island of Macau off the coast of China.

Pacquiao outclasses Rios

As many had expected, the speed of Manny Pacquiao was too much for Bam Bam. While the threat of the one punch KO was there, the movement and angles of Pacquiao muted any thought of a left hook from Rios.

Let’s pump the brakes on any talk of Floyd Mayweather. First, there’s the Top Rank/Golden Boy-HBO/Showtime schism which would prevent any such fight from happening  Pacquiao looked impressive and it appears that the 11 months away has helped.  Rios is a dangerous fighter but nowhere near the skill level of a Mayweather.  However, a Timothy Bradley fight seems the most logical and reasonable next fight for Pacquiao.

Bradley’s career has ascended since he won that controversial fight over Pacquiao in June 2012.  Most recently, he dispatched of Pacquiao’s arch-nemesis, Juan Manuel Marquez.  Thus, promoting this fight should not be too hard considering this would be a rematch of a controversial decision.  With his post-Pacquiao fights, Bradley has proven that he belongs in the upper tier of boxing.  A return match against Pacquiao could serve as “passing the torch” to Top Rank’s next superstar or will serve as another reason for all parties to wait out Floyd’s Showtime contract.

10-the-clash-in-cotai

Zou Shiming Shines

In terms of importance of a boxer winning Saturday, Shiming was a close second behind Pacquiao.  The reason for this is the overarching theme of tapping the Chinese market.  Shiming has the amateur credentials but has not really showed whether he could be a star as a pro.  He dominated his 6 round fight over Juan Tozcana in which the announcing crew questioned whether the fight should have been stopped.

If Shiming could show continued improvement, he has a built in audience and could ascend quickly.  Of course, at 32 years of age, the plan is for him to ascend quickly.

Attendance

Attendance at the Venetian Hotel in Macau where the event was held was a sellout of 13,200.  No gate figures yet although front row seats were selling for three times the amount that it usually would in Vegas.

In comparison, Pacquiao’s last fight in December 2012 against Marquez had an attendance of 15,430 for a gate of $10.8 million.  However, based on the front row seats going for three times what they do in Vegas, we can see a comparable gate here.

Paydays

Manny Pacquiao will receive a guaranteed $18 million with the potential for $30 million and does not have to pay the 39.6% U.S. tax since the fight did not happen in the states.  Rios, however, will receive $4 million but will need to pay Uncle Sam because he’s a U.S. citizen.

Pre-Fight Promotion

The incident in the gym between Freddie Roach, Robert Garcia and Alex Ariza provided some “propaganda” for the fight.  Was the dustup manufactured?  It received press and drew some emotions but looked bad for both camps. But, we all can assume the Roach-Ariza bad blood is genuine based on how Pacquiao’s team dispatched of Ariza and he was picked up by Rios.

The 24/7 series was well-done as always.  It seems hard to come up with angles to cover Pacquiao each series although the typhoon and the aforementioned ill-will between camps provided some topics.  We also learned that Rios curses a lot.

Sponsorships

The ring sponsors included Smart Communications, a Philippines mobile phone and internet carrier, the movie “Grudge Match” starring DeNiro and Stallone and Tecate. Tecate ran its usual promotion of offering rebates with a purchase of its product.  What was not present was the usual run up for a Pacquiao fight in the states which usual includes in-store promotions and sponsor activation.

Rios wore a Sigue Corporation shirt at weigh-ins. Sigue is a money transfer company specializing in US-Mexico transaction.

As always, Nike sponsored Pacquiao however this article by footwear blog Sole Collector details the little buzz from the swoosh over the Macau fight.  In fact, the online Nike store only has one shirt (from last year) from Pacquiao on sale.  This from a company that rolled out shirts, sweats and shoes for the boxer before past fights. This time, it seemed like the brand was in a “wait and see” mode.  Of course, it also could be due to Pacquiao’s newfound faith in which media outlets have interpreted (or misinterpreted dependent on how you view it) Pacquiao’s stance against gay marriage. Nike supports gay marriage. There were also the comments made by UFC president Dana White claiming the Beaverton, Oregon Company had dropped Pacquiao.

Odds and Ends

As predicted, the price point for Pacquiao in HD was $70.

Due to the time difference, the fight actually took place around lunchtime local time on Sunday which made fight day customs a little skewed.

NY Times writer Greg Bishop had a great piece preceding the fight correlating Pacquiao’s in-ring downturn with the rejuvenation of his religious faith and commitment to his wife.  There is something to be said for the lack of perceived hunger in Pacquiao if you were to compare him now as opposed to pre-Oscar de la Hoya.  Pacquiao was young and reckless socially which mirrored his fighting style.  The style in the ring amounted to interest and success, the style outside of the ring nearly cost him his marriage. After “returning to form” on Saturday, can we say that Pacquiao is born again boxing-wise?

Bishop also wrote an informative article on the logistical obstacles HBO and Top Rank faced in producing a PPV abroad.  This included bringing 300 cases of equipment by air and water to the location.

There were some that thought that the Carl Froch-George Graves fight should have been picked up by HBO to use as an appetizer for the fight later that night.  It would have been nice but would have run the risk of being “UFC”-like in having too much boxing on in one day.

Conclusion

Despite the lack of buzz and usual American “over the top” promotion, “The Clash in Cotai” had a purpose.  First, it was to reintroduce the world to Manny Pacquiao. The statement was that he was back to his “old” self.  More importantly, it was an opportunity to enter the fertile Macau market with its casinos bringing in $38 billion in 2012  and likely more this year.  Bob Arum would like to open up this region as a way to leverage it against Vegas as an option to hold a fight here.  Certainly, it would benefit Pacquiao as its closer to home and he saves on paying U.S. taxes if his fights are held outside of the U.S.  That being said, the costs for HBO/Top Rank to hold a show outside of the U.S. along with Pacquiao’s hefty payout may be something it needs to consider before committing time, money and resources to another fight in Macau.

For its first time holding a PPV overseas,  it’s likely that Pacquiao’s return will grab at least 850,000-950,000 buys.

Michigan plays host to XFC 27: Frozen Fury on December 13th

xfc 27 michigan 300x200 Michigan plays host to XFC 27: Frozen Fury on December 13thMixed Martial Arts (MMA) continues its rise into the main stream of sports. MMA continues to hold the unofficial title, “the worlds fastest growing sport.” And with its rise, fight promotions are popping up all over the US with hopes of becoming the next big thing. Unfortunately for fight fans, whether it’s due to bad planning, marketing, financials, etc. most of these promotions come and go leaving fighters searching for a stage to showcase their talents.

One promotion that continues to build momentum with each show is Xtreme Fighting Championship (XFC). Since it’s inception in 2010, the Florida based promotion has promoted twenty-six events in five states and has partnered with AXS TV that televises XFC events to a national audience.

On December 13th, the rising promotion comes to Muskegon, Michigan with XFC 27: Frozen Fury. The bout lineup promises to give fans a night of MMA they won’t soon forget. “We’re excited to make our first trek to the Northern part of the United States,” said TJ Alcock, XFC Director of Communications. “As a nationally televised, traveling, promotion we have found some of the highest-level fighters from each region we’ve been to and Michigan is no different,” he continued.

The State of Michigan is no stranger to the world of combat sports. Michigan has a rich history in the world of professional boxing such as Detroit’s The Brown Bomber, Joe Louis. Tommy “The Hitman” Hearns moved to Detroit at a young age and represented the Motor City well with his boxing career. Now with the surge of MMA, a new breed of fighters from all over the Great Lakes State are searching for that one opportunity that can propel them to the next level.

XFC has built a reputation of finding talent across the US and giving them a platform where the stage belongs to them. “To be able to give several local (Michigan) fighters a chance to showcase their talents on one of the biggest stages in the World and be promoted Worldwide through the XFC’s industry leading media team, it feels good knowing the opportunities we are offering for young fighters with such big dreams,” said Alcock.

What separates XFC from other promotions is the event itself. XFC prides itself in giving the patrons more bang for their buck. Bouts are evenly matched and the production spares no expense. XFC understand that the fighters and fans are the main ingredients of its success and putting on a world-class event is a way of saying “thank you.”

“The event has really come together rather smoothly and the XFC cannot wait to head up north into the cold climate and heat it up with some of the best male and female mixed martial arts fights in the industry,” said XFC Matchmaker John Prisco. “We’ve got some great fights in store for the fans and can’t wait to show everyone why we are one of the top promotions on television,” he continued.

The lineup features several Michigan fighters who look to become household XFC names. “At the end of the night, I’ll be very excited if we find ourselves adding a few new fighters to the XFC roster!,” said Prisco.

Be sure to join XFC at the weigh-ins on Thursday Dec. 12th for an open meet and greet with the fighters and staff then head to the L.C. Walker arena on Friday Dec. 13th for a night of hard-hitting XFC MMA action, televised on AXS TV. Tickets start at $19+, with VIP Tables available on request. UFC adds Yoel Romero vs. Derek Brunson, Vinc Pichel vs. Garett Whiteley to UFC Fight Night 35 in Georgia

Fox_Sports_1_logo_45.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Two more fights have been added to the UFC Fight Night 35 event in Duluth, Georgia this January, as the UFC announced on Tuesday that Yoel Romero will take on Derek Brunson, and Vinc Pichel will meet Garett Whiteley.

Both Romero and Brunson picked up wins earlier this month at UFC Fight For The Troops 3. Brunson opened the night off with an exciting knockdown and submission over Brian Houston in the night's first fight, while Romero knocked out Ronny Markes on the night's main card.

Pichel hasn't fought since his UFC debut in December of last year, missing all of 2013 due to injuries. In his last outing, he was knocked out by Rustam Khabilov when he was slammed on his head during a suplex. He'll take on Whiteley, who also suffered his first career loss in his UFC debut. That came last month at UFC Fight Night 29 when he was stopped by Alan Patrick in Brazil.

UFC Fight Night 35 airs live on Fox Sports 1 on Wednesday, January 15, headlined by the middleweight bout between Luke Rockhold and Costa Philippou.

UFC’s Matt Grice released from hospital

Two months after being hospitalized with brain and other injuries following a car accident, UFC featherweight Matt Grice has been released from the hospital. Grice, a full-time Oklahoma City police officer, was hit from behind while off duty and stopped at a red light in early September.

He was immediately hospitalized and underwent brain surgery. A few weeks later, Grice reportedly began moving his limbs again and responding to verbal cues.

On Monday, Grice appeared on The MMA Hour. "I feel pretty good," Grice said.

"I still have the brain injury and stuff, so it's a little different, a longer road. But, physically, I feel okay. My balance is a little off still with the brain injury. But, other than that, I feel pretty good. I was in the hospital for two months and I got to come home a week and half ago to do outpatient rehab. I do rehab in the day and at night I get to go home to my family, it's awesome."

Grice also said that he may have another operation in December to replace part of his skull that was initially removed to relieve pressure on his brain. Despite this, he said that his doctors have not ruled out a return to MMA competition.

UFC Champ Chris Weidman pleads case to fight in home state of New York

Chris_Weidman_wide_20.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

UFC Middleweight Champion Chris Weidman was on hand this week as the UFC went back to New York City's Madison Square Garden to reveal the results of another economic impact study.

It's the beginning of yet another push towards getting the sport legalized in the state of New York, and Weidman plead his case as a native New Yorker to lawmakers in the state.

"I'm from Baldwin, Long Island and I never left New York," Weidman said (via UFC.com). "I'm born and raised and as New York as it gets. I got my associates degree from Nassau Community College, my bachelors from Hofstra, and my masters from Hofstra University. And recently, I accomplished the thing in my life that I feel is the most important besides getting married to my beautiful wife and having my beautiful children, and that was winning the UFC belt."

"That's good, but there's something really missing, and it kind of takes away from this belt, and that's not being able to participate in my sport – something I'm so passionate about and that I've worked my whole life for – in my home state of New York."

Penick's Analysis: Weidman and others continue to try to showcase themselves in the state, but the sport still hasn't gotten its due as of yet. Hopefully 2014 will be the year, but they need Sheldon Silver and the New York State Assembly to give them that chance. If they do and let a vote go through this year, the UFC will finally be able to make their long awaited trip to MSG.

UFC Heavyweight Champ Cain Velasquez may yet require shoulder surgery

VelasquezCain_Wide_27.png

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Though it had previously been reported that Cain Velasquez's shoulder injury would not need surgery, he's not out of the woods on that front yet.

It was reported Wednesday that the injury was a torn labrum, and though his manager Bob Cook wouldn't confirm the exact injury, he did reveal in an interview with MMAJunkie.com that surgery may yet be a necessity.

"He's going in to get re-evaluated in a week-and-a-half, and at that point, we'll have a better idea," Cook said. "But it's not 100 percent one way or the other."

As for his return timetable, it's all going to be dependent on whether surgery is required or not. Still, if surgery is not needed, Cook believes the previously discussed April return could be feasible.

"I think it all depends on the injury and how he feels," Cook said. "As soon as he's good to go, he'll fight. I think if he doesn't need surgery, [April] should be a realistic timeframe. Hopefully, when the doctors look at him again, everything is doing what they want it to do, and he won't need surgery and he can get going. But if it's not progressing the way they want it to, then they're going to fix it, and he'll be out for a while."

Penick's Analysis: If surgery is required, that's another Champ on the shelf for a significant portion of 2014. While the UFC is closing 2013 out real strong, it's going to be a rough start to the new year at the same time that they're expanding the amount of events they're running. No one wants to see surgery required here, but it's all going to come down what they find out in his next evaluation.

Douglas Lima may not have arrived in Bellator with the same level of fanfare that other fighters received, but after going 7-1 in the promotion and winning not one but two tournaments, he’s become of one of it’s biggest names. In fact, the only man to defeat Lima since 2009 is Ben Aksen, but because the former champ has left for free agency, it looks like a rematch isn’t going to happen. Not anytime soon anyways.

So what does Lima think of Askren’s departure? A man who Lima has said publicly he was hoping to fight again? Well, while speaking to MMA Fighting.com recently, here is some of what the 25 year-old said:

“I was kind of (surprised) because he was the undefeated champion and a really tough fighter,” Lima said about Askren. “But he didn’t sell his fights because of his fighting style and I think that’s really important for the promotion. I believe that’s the reason why Bellator didn’t want to fight that much for him.”

“It’s not my fault that he’s out of Bellator and I just want my shot at the title. People can say whatever they want. They can say that (Askren) is the real champion after I beat Hawn, but that doesn’t bother me at all. I just want to beat whoever they put in front of me.”

Lima also relayed he’s not sure if Askren leaving is “good or bad” but added he’s certain the “UFC will sign” the renowned wrestler. As Lima noted, he’ll take on Rick Hawn for the vacant belt, who KO’d Ron Keslar to take the latest welterweight tourney.

“Funky” is expected to meet with the UFC this week, however, UFC boss man Dana White continues to insist the promotion won’t be inking Askren to a contract.
