Top middleweight contender Chris Weidman underwent surgery on Thursday to repair a a very badly injured shoulder, and he's optimistic for a big return in 2013. Weidman took to Twitter to update fans on how the surgery went, and said he expects to be back to 100% in just four months.

"Surgery went perfect," Weidman wrote. "On my way back to Long Island now. Had a torn labrum and rotator cuff, AC joint seperation and slight tear in ligament."

"I will be 90 percent in three months and 100 in 4!"

Weidman was scheduled to meet Tim Boetsch later this month at UFC 155, but the shoulder injury suffered in training took him out of action. He'll try to plug right back into the mix when he's able to return, and he plans on coming back stronger than before.

"I am gonna make it my life mission to come back better then ever," Weidman wrote. "Can't wait to get back in that UFC Octagon."

Penick's Analysis: It's great to hear the surgery went well, but a shoulder injury that severe is not something to rush back from. Cain Velasquez had difficulties in his recovery from a shoulder injury, and Anthony Pettis has been battling setbacks from his own shoulder surgery this past summer. Weidman's got to concentrate on rehabbing effectively, and slowing down if he's in danger of re-aggravating the injury. If he does that, he can come back strong, and that's the best thing for him, the fans, and the UFC.
