When UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones opted for a future fight against Chael Sonnen instead of putting his belt on the line against a legitimate contender, 25-year old Alexander Gustafsson saw his hopes of a title-shot put on hold despite being one of the division’s most deserving competitors. Gustafsson cemented that status over the weekend by outpointing Mauricio Rua at UFC on FOX 5 in convincing fashion. However, he’s still no closer to a crack at Jones (or Sonnen for that matter).
Fortunately for fans, Gustafsson took time at the post-event press conference to announce he’s willing to put his six-fight winning streak on the line in the coming months and has no plans to sit on the sidelines unnecessarily just because “Bones” isn’t available as an opponent.
“I want to stay active. I want to fight. I will fight whenever. I was away for a long time. I fought the last time in April, and that was too long for me. To wait till summer again, that would be too long. I want to fight earlier than that.”
“I want to fight for the belt, and if they give me one before that, it doesn’t matter. I’ll fight whoever.”
