Score Fighting Series 7 results: Mein quickly stops Petz, Ronson batters Healy

Strikeforce took a gamble by loaning out Jordan Mein, one of its top welterweight prospects, for Friday's Score Fighting Series 7 headliner.

Against UFC vet Forrest Petz, he faced a heavy-handed fighter with proven knockout power.

Yet, quickly in the main-event fight, it looked like anything but a risky proposition.

Quinton Jackson vs. Bellator

Quinton Jackson - UFC

Light heavyweight Quinton Jackson has been a fan-favorite for years, possessing one of MMA’s biggest personalities, knockout power, and a penchant for throwing down in the ring rather than relying on safer strategies to procure victory. He was a star in PRIDE and the UFC, even going so far as to receive mainstream recognition such as a featured role in The A-Team.

Now a free agent, Jackson finally has an opportunity to negotiate with suitors he feels will show him the respect he never received during his recent run in the Octagon. One of the leading contenders on that front is Bellator, an organization with the backing of Viacom and a spot on Spike TV.

If “Rampage” does indeed end up in Bellator, it doesn’t seem likely he’ll compete in the tournament based on the rigors involved, That being said, there’s no doubt he’d bring some legitimacy to the brand.

Here are a three intriguing options for Jackson certain to draw viewers and deliver entertainment come showtime…

Renato Sobral (37-10)

Like Jackson, “Babalu” is a veteran of the game who owns wins against a number of respected adversaries. Though both spent time in Japan and the UFC, the two never crossed paths. The bout is marketable on name value alone, plus it would pit Jackson against an opponent with the BJJ to pose real problems and some nice stand-up to boot.

Travis Wiuff (68-16)

This match-up is perfect for fans into slugfests. Wiuff loves to swing for the fences, as does Jackson, and chances are someone would end up crumpled on the canvas if the two ever face off.

Mo Lawal (9-1)

Jackson and Lawal have jawed back and forth for a long time, though it has turned into a good natured rivalry as of late with each showing support for the other rather than contempt. Still, both men are great in front of a microphone and know how to sell a fight. If Bellator ever goes the PPV route, Lawal-Jackson could easily serve as a main event or at least co-headliner. Also, for folks afraid that Lawal would simply take Jackson down and “hump” his way to victory, “King Mo” is actually an excellent boxer and is more likely to test himself in that regard rather than go the easy route.

Uriah Hall: Q & A with the TUF 17 Standout, Part 2

FX Intro to TUF 17 SC

Over the course of nearly 20 seasons of The Ultimate Fighter, things have gotten a little stale. I mean, what are we going to see now that we haven’t already seen three or four times already? Enter: TUF 17, whose opening episode was a breath of fresh air. It was shot differently, giving it a new look and feel, and it had emotional resonance thanks to the addition of family watching the competitors fight their way into the TUF House. It also had Uriah Hall, who kicked so much ass, Dana White, Chael Sonnen and Jon Jones practically tripped over themselves heaping on the praise.

The day after the first episode, Fighters.com caught up with the New York native and Tiger Schulmann’s MMA product to get a little insight into this promising TUFer. How did he like living in the TUF House? Did he forge any lasting friendships? What does he think of Chael Sonnen, Jon Jones and Dana White after meeting them? Read on.

A lot of people say being cooped up in the TUF House is a living hell. How was it for you?

“It was different. It was right where I needed to be. I think I’d recommend it to a lot of people – not the fighting part, but the part where you stay in one place and only have your thoughts. You know, you’re locked in a house and there’s no TV, there’s no outlet but your thoughts. Sometimes you can’t just talk with someone else because that’s the person you might be fighting. So it was good for me to kind of have my thoughts. I had to talk to myself more, and it made me have a little more depth to myself. I understand things a lot better. In the end, I only had myself to rely on, so I had to be positive, I had to be confident, to give one hundred percent. Going to train every day was the best feeling. Going back to the house, I was like, ‘Oh shit.’ When I trained it was a release.”

Did you make any friends?

“I made friends on the show, I think. But in the back of everybody’s mind they’re like, ‘Oh, I’m going to have to fight this guy.’ I actually made friends with a guy from the other team – Dylan Andrews – who taught me to kind of control my emotions. He said, ‘If stuff is bothering you, anything you’re thinking about, just write it down.’ I started writing stuff down and it made me feel a lot better. It’s almost like having a therapist.”

“Him and Clint Hester, they were cool. And Bubba McDaniel, he was cool, too.”

What was the worst part of the experience?

“I don’t think there was really a ‘worst’ part of the experience. I think everything happened the way it should have, and I got a lot from it. I feel like I grew more as an individual. Same thing about the ‘best’ part of it. It was right where I needed to be, it was perfect. I needed that distraction from the world. I needed it to focus on that one thing… I can’t really say anything bad about it.”

From what we’ve heard from fighters who took part in past seasons, you can eat almost anything you want there. What was the best thing you ate?

“The best thing I ate over there… man, I had a lot of stuff, to tell you the truth. The chicken fingers were awesome. Maybe it was because I was hungry and I had to eat healthy for a while, and junk food tastes so good, but I liked the chicken fingers.”

You got to spend a lot of time with Sonnen, Jones and White. What did you learn about them that you didn’t know before?

“I definitely didn’t know that Chael Sonnen was such a good guy off-camera. I’d seen stuff that he says on-camera, but maybe that’s his way of building up a fight or whatever. But the Chael that I met was the complete opposite. The guy, just the way he spoke, the way he motivated us, it kind of showed he wasn’t there for himself. He was there for us. That really came across in how he taught us and how he motivated us, and tried to bring us to the next level.”

So you were glad to be on his team?

“In the beginning I said I wished I had been on Jon Jones’ team, and a lot of people at home said, ‘Man, you should’ve been on Jone’s team, you have the same fighting style.’ But Jones couldn’t have taught me what Chael did. Jones would’ve probably taught me physical stuff, but Chael got in my head, and I think that was exactly what I needed. I needed someone to get into my head and take me to the next level, and that’s what happened. Jones, he’s a cool guy – the coolest guy I’ve ever met. Just talking to him, I feel like I’ve known him forever. I wasn’t there to just hate anybody, I was there to learn and grow as a fighter.”

And what did you learn about Dana White?

“I definitely know that when you hang out with Dana White, you’ve got a walk around with a clicker for how many times he says the ‘F’ word… But other than that, he seems like a really cool guy. I think Dana could tell you a simple story and make it exciting. Like, ‘Wow, that’s the best story I ever heard.’ But he’s very passionate about what he does.

Tune in to SpikeTV tonight for a new episode of The Ultimate Fighter 17.

‘Shogun’ Rua revamps training staff: Recruits Freddie Roach, reunites with Mark Munoz

‘Shogun’ Rua revamps training staff: Recruits Freddie Roach, reunites with Mark Munoz and Rafael Cordeiro

By Adam Guillen Jr. on Jan 30, 5:01p 26

After losing to Alexander Gustafsson at UFC on FOX 5, former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua looks to bolster up his training staff and revamp his arsenal before jumping back into the Octagon.

Mauricio Rua is looking for a fresh start.

After losing to Alexander Gustafsson at UFC on FOX 5 last December in Seattle, Washington, "Shogun" is going back to the drawing board as he looks to plug up a few holes in his fight game while polishing up his all-around mixed martial arts (MMA) skills.

And he's bringing in the big guns to do it.

According to one of his trainers, Andre Dida, Rua will bring in a few familiar faces to his next camp as he reunites with former Chute Boxe trainer and head honcho at Kings MMA, Rafael Cordeiro, who has been in and out of the Brazilian's camp for the past couple of years.

On top of that, the former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight champion will brush up on his wrestling skills under the tutelage of current UFC middleweight contender and former NCAA Division 1 Champion, Mark Munoz.

Dida's words to Tatame:

Quote:

"Shogun is a guy who knows everything about MMA, trains well in all areas, but noted that he has to seek further knowledge, have more activities, new workouts. That's always good for any athlete, and Shogun will be no different. He has excellent wrestling, workouts out there will evolve too. We talked with Mark Munoz in Seattle and he was excited to train with Mauricio again. They trained together at Kings MMA, and it was there that our friendship has also increased. We exchanged many experiences. But Mauricio will also train with Jacob Rocha, a guy who trains the American Wrestling in college, then it is a complete workout of Wrestling. His students have great results in California, earn everything. It will be a great experience for Mauricio. The expectation is that Shogun will go to the United States in February after Carnival. There, he will meet with Rafael Cordeiro, since the coach will be in Brazil for the recordings of TUF Brazil 2."
As if Rua's striking wasn't dangerous enough already, the Brazilian bomber will look to polish his technique as he heads west to train with famed boxing trainer Freddie Roach, who has helped multiple boxing champions such as Manny Pacquiao and Oscar de la Hoya reach the pinnacle of the sport as well as tossing a few pointers to UFC titleholders Georges St. Pierre and Anderson Silva.

Quote:

"Here in America, Shogun also trains with Freddie Roach, who is the trainer of Manny Pacquiao in boxing. The knockout power of Mauricio is very large, his Muay Thai is very sharp, and we think these workouts will leave you with a footprint standing even stronger."
Over his last eight bouts inside the Octagon, "Shogun" has alternated wins and losses, failing to put together consecutive victories since 2009 when he defeated Mark Coleman and Chuck Liddell in a span of four months.

While the 31-year old former PRIDE FC Middleweight Grand Prix winner awaits word of his next opponent (perhaps the loser of this weekend's Rashad Evans vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira bout at UFC 156) the 28-fight veteran looks to show it's never too late to learn some new tricks.

Demian Maia says dream outcome at UFC 156 is to submit Jon Fitch in the first minute

MMATorch_Generic_Logo_wide_194.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

"I needed to be reborn. I felt when I was hitting guys or going for a takedown at 185, sometimes it was like hitting a wall. Now in this weight division, it's more fair for me... [Jon Fitch is] able to mentally break his opponents because his will is big. There' are other wrestlers with big wills, but I think he has one of the biggest wills. So you need to be aware because he comes to break you... Now that I learned I'm able to do well with boxing, I was able to train more jiu-jitsu again. I've come back to my grappling. My dream is to take the fight down in the first minute and submit Fitch. That's my dream and I hope it comes true."

-Demian Maia talks to ESPN.com about his UFC 156 bout with Jon Fitch and getting back to his jiu jitsu game in his two fights at welterweight.

Penick's Analysis: There's been a significant difference in his approach to his fights at welterweight than his last series of bouts at 185. Part of that is due to more of a strength advantage than he had in the middleweight field, which led to a lot more stalemate action against tougher, stronger grapplers. There's the potential for that here, but if he comes in and takes out Fitch in quick fashion, it will be massively impressive, and will move him very close to a title fight in the welterweight division.

After UFC on Fox 6 win, Anthony Pettis willing to wait out title shot against Henderson-Melendez winner

Anthony_Pettis_wide_banner_15.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Prior to UFC on Fox 6, Anthony Pettis wasn't sure if he'd be willing to sit out on the sidelines for an extended period of time for a title fight if he got past Donald Cerrone. Well, he got past Cerrone in more impressive fashion than perhaps most believed he would, becoming the first person to stop Cerrone with strikes. That brought about high praise from UFC President Dana White after the event.

"I think the Melendez fight is pretty set, but [Pettis is] next," White said of the UFC Lightweight Title picture (via MMAJunkie.com). "I can't say enough things about the kid tonight – that was incredible. Obviously his big all-time highlight will be the kick off the fence. But tonight, the knee off the fence, was unbelievable."

With that vote of confidence - not to mention assurance that he's next in line to face the winner of Ben Henderson vs. Gilbert Melendez - Pettis said he's now willing to wait that fight out, having fought his way back to this spot.

"If it's a guaranteed title shot, then I'm waiting," Pettis said. "That was my goal this year, and I'm definitely going to wait and get better."

Pettis will now await the outcome of the April 20 bout between Henderson and Melendez, and will hope that the victor in that fight is ready to go as soon as possible.

Penick's Analysis: Pettis has lost out on one promised title shot before, so he really has to hope that either Melendez or Henderson comes out of the April 20 fight with no significant injuries in a win so they can get that fight together as soon as possible. He's the most deserving challenger in the division, and after seeing what he did to Cerrone on Saturday night there can't be any further doubt about that. Melendez will get his shot first, but Pettis is ready for the winner later this year in what will almost assuredly be an incredible Lightweight Championship bout.

Computer files stored accurately on DNA in new breakthrough

Scientists have recorded data including Shakespearean sonnets and an MP3 file on strands of DNA, in a breakthrough which could see millions of records stored on a handful of molecules rather than computer drives.

By translating computerised files into DNA similar to that found in plants and animals, the researchers claim it is possible to store a billion books' worth of data for thousands of years in just a small test tube.

Although the method is expensive, it could still be much more efficient than hard drives or magnetic tape for long-term storage of large sets of data such as government records, the scientists said.

Within a decade, they expect the technique to have become cheap enough that DNA storage could become cost-efficient for the public to store lifelong keepsakes like wedding videos.

Dr Nick Goldman of the European Bioinformatics Institute, who led the study, said: "We already know that DNA is a robust way to store information because we can extract it from bones of woolly mammoths, which date back tens of thousands of years, and make sense of it.

"It's also incredibly small, dense and does not need any power for storage, so shipping and keeping it is easy."

The advantage of using DNA over hard drives is that it does not require a constant supply of electricity, while "no-power" archiving materials such as magnetic tape degrade within a decade.

Scientists have long been able to read DNA, a code comprising four "letters", but using it to store information has been difficult because it is prone to decoding errors when the same letter is repeated.

In a study published in the Nature journal, the researchers demonstrated they could avoid the problem by translating computer files, made up of ones and zeroes, into a form of DNA code which did not allow letters to repeat themselves.

First they converted an audio file of Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" speech, a photograph of their laboratory, a PDF file of an academic paper and a text version of all Shakespeare's sonnets into the DNA code.

The code was sent to a US lab where experts converted it into synthetic strings of DNA which resembled a tiny grain of dust.

The researchers then sequenced the synthetic DNA to retrieve the code, before converting it back into the original computer files with 99.9 per cent accuracy.

Dr Goldman said: "Because it is expensive and one of its big advantages is longevity, the potential applications will initially be in really high value information which you are determined to keep safe but you do not expect to read very often, such as government records or the Doomsday Book.

"As the price starts to come down it will start to become available to people with smaller budgets, so in ten years' time it may be [cost efficient for] something you would look at on a 50 year timescale, such as a wedding video.

MMATorch Interview: The Trials and Tribulations of a Regional MMA Fighter

MMATorch_Generic_Logo_wide_190.jpg

Interview with "Fighter X" On the Hardships of Fighting For Independent Promotion
By Brad Walker MMATorch Columnist

Writer's note: This is an interview with a fighter who has spent some time in regional and independent promotions, generally on the east coast. It was done under the condition of anonymity.

Most people believe that making your way to a UFC or Bellator contract is generally a lavish life; this interview will give you a really gritty reality check as to how things can really be. I hope you all enjoy and learn from this interview with our anonymous fighter we'll call "Fighter X," just as I have, and become appreciative of your local fighters everywhere.

Walker: First off, obviously you're a professional fighter; your record reflects a great well rounded ability, how does that work for you in the cage?

Fighter X: Well, inside of the cage in a fight your game plan is going to do one of two things – help you win or make you lose - so marching in with all the talent in the world doesn't really matter if you can't change your game on the fly. A great fighter will crush you, a good one will hurt you, and a bad one will get hurt, and that's only if you stick to your original game plan.

Walker: We've talked in the past about the financial hardships of being an independent fighter, can you tell me a little more about that?

Fighter X: Man, where the f*** do I start? Most of these smaller promotions, they invite you in with what looks like a decent paycheck, $300 to show, $300 to win, and then when you win you get some good cash, if you lose maybe not so good. The problem is after that they know you're going to come back for another fight with them, because you figure "hey, I made some good cash over there."

Walker: So you're implying that some promoters use a bait and switch type of mentality to get fighters to return to their organization?

Fighter X: Bait and switch is an understatement. I've always thought of it like dating; on the first date they act like a real nice person, take you out, wine and dine you, then on the second date they just absolutely f*** you. My second fight with (promotion withheld) I was fighting in Tennessee and instead of a show and win purse, I had to sell their tickets just to get a single cent for my fight. I had to purchase something like $500 in tickets and sell them just to break even, and jack the prices up to my friends and family if I wanted to make any actual money off of the fight, it was terrible.

Walker: Did you manage to make the money back?

Fighter X: Not even close, I took a $400 dollar bath and lost a decision in that fight, do you know how much it sucks to lose a fight and have it actually COST you $400 in the process? I was hemorrhaging money just to be able to fight professionally because of those crooked assholes.

Walker: So after that happened did you walk away from that promotion and promoter?

Fighter X: You see that's the thing, if you ever want to make this a career you can't afford to. Loyalty is heavily considered to be something that pays in this sport, the problem is you actually pay to be loyal, it sucks. If I had gone over to another promotion in the area my coaches, trainers and teammates would have been on my back because they fight for this guy and lose money too. Who am I to leave them to be the ones losing money, is kind of how they look at it.

Walker: Well what about the larger organizations in the UFC and Bellator – wouldn't that be a significantly better payday for you?

Fighter X: Oh absolutely, I would actually be MAKING money instead of spending it to either kick some ass or get mine kicked. There's still a problem though. If you walk into Bellator for your first year you're probably going to get paid about $10,000 a fight for 5 fights in that first year; do you know how hard it is to pay all of your bills, cover your medical bills, car payment, mortgage, insurance and feed your family with $50,000 a year? It's not even remotely possible. The beginner pay really isn't great as far as having a set lifestyle, but it's a hell of a lot better than losing money before you even get in the cage.

Walker: Before we go any further the monetary issues make me wonder about fighter management; how does that look from your point of view, and are you presently managed?

Fighter X: I have done everything in my power to avoid taking on management; if I can book it myself, why shouldn't I? Should some man or woman with a day planner picking a date and a location really be taking like 30% of my money that I trained hard and fought hard to earn? Making phone calls doesn't entitle you to my money in my mind. I can send out e-mails and make calls to find sponsors too, I want to put my own stamp on my career, not pay someone else to do it.

Walker: So have you actually received and reviewed offers from managerial companies in the sport?

Fighter X: Absolutely, the problem is if I'm fighting on the east coast, and I win a few fights and any company that wants to pay me more than $1000 to fight offers me a contract then 90% of the managerial contracts I have seen automatically extend themselves so they can continue to bleed money from me for picking fights. It's insane, if I hire a manager and I get into the UFC you know what happens? I'm stuck with that manager for the rest of my career. It's awful, they're like predators.

Walker: That's a pretty terrible turn around, but from personal experience and contacts I do know there are legit managers out there who don't dupe their fighters. Moving on, what is it like in the gym being one of the professionals who isn't in the big leagues yet?

Fighter X: Not bad really, the gym is like a family, we're all friends some nights after training we go out and get drinks, shoot the shit – normal buddy buddy stuff. The thing is, the fighters who are managed, mostly by the same company, tend to turn into a clique, and for the rest of us it sucks. They organize their own wrestling and no-gi practices and don't mention anything to us. What, they think we don't want to work on our game in our free time too? It's bullshit.

Walker: In your area, I'm relatively unfamiliar with the regional management and organizations, but do you feel like on your own without representation you can make it to the big time?

Fighter X: You know, I ponder that a lot myself too. I'm not sure if they've even made it possible for guys like me without contacts at the top to gain access to matchmakers and whoever writes out the contracts for UFC and Bellator and XFC and RFA. The entire system is based around someone taking your money to do it for you; the problem is, if you don't pay someone to do it, you will never get a call back, you will never get acknowledged, s*** you won't even exist to them without a manager who has some leverage.

Walker: You make it sound like the deck is stacked against the little guy in MMA, is that what you're insinuating?

Fighter X: If it wasn't stacked against the little guy I can think of 30-40 guys I know without management who would be jacking jaws in the UFC right now. Do you think the UFC is going to call back some 3-0 fighter who lives in a loft apartment with his dog and rations ramen noodles to make it through the week? Hell no. Trust me, I've tried. My professional record is flawless, my amateur record wasn't great but since I hit my stride I haven't lost in three years. No manager essentially means no contract.

Walker: Moving back to the regional promotions, how easy is it to get booked – even if you're losing money?

Fighter X: Oh, getting booked is as easy as can be, I can call the promoter and tell him what weight and he'll say "ok cool we'll get you an opponent." The problem is when he calls you back a week later and tells you who you're fighting, then when you talk to the guy you're [supposed to be] fighting on Twitter or Facebook, they haven't received a single call from him and you know you're getting dicked around.

Walker: Has that actually happened – or is that just an example?

Fighter X: Oh it's happened to me and a couple of teammates before, then when you confront the promoter they claim there was some clarification issues; how the hell can you clarify telling me I'm fighting a guy, and he's not even booked to fight or training to fight? It's an outright lie. Then the shit really hits the fan when they change my opponent every three days, change my weight class a week before the fight and give me shit for missing weight by a half pound.

Walker: What is the weight class that you were meant to be fighting at?

Fighter X: I was going to fight at bantamweight but that opponent backed out and I got asked to take a fight at flyweight. It's really difficult to cut an extra 10 pounds in three days, especially when you've already cut 10-15 pounds. It's not an easy thing to do, [but] these promoters a lot of them don't realize how hard this is to go through, mostly because they're sitting on their "f*** the fighter" business motto and counting OUR money while we go out there and entertain the crowd.

Walker: I know plenty of guys who hate the cut – but that seems like a pretty raw deal. Do you actually believe that's their business motto?

Fighter X: Subconsciously, their actual operating motto is probably "pay me, or get the f*** out of my cage." They set up the whole system to make THEIR money; we don't get a damn thing. I fought in a 10,000 seat arena not too long ago, it was pretty damn packed, and I still only made about $30 bucks back off the $500 stack of tickets I had to sell. All of the fighters have overlapping friends so we have to hustle each other just to break even. It sucks.

Walker: Wow. I never realized parts of the independent scene could be so seedy. Is there anything else you want to add for everyone who reads this?

Fighter X: Support your local fighters, please! We may not be on the biggest stage in the world, we may not do the 'Showtime Kick' but we put on one hell of a show. We want our fights to entertain you the same way guys like Cain Velasquez and Donald Cerrone and Anderson Silva do, we do this for the love of the sport, but we add a splash for the love of the fan, and we love to feel it back. Nothing feels better than hearing the crowds roar after you take a guy's head off with a spinning back fist, the adrenaline rush is unmatched.

Walker: Thanks for your time; I really think this is going to open some eyes

Fighter X: Thanks for giving me a place to air my grievances safely!

Donald Cerrone wants to go pro as a wakeboarder

UFC lightweight Donald Cerrone will fight Anthony Pettis at the UFC's next card on Fox, but a win over his fellow WEC veteran isn't Cerrone's only goal for 2013. He told MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani that he plans to go pro as a wakeboarder this year.

"I love wakeboarding and definitely plan on going pro this year," Cerrone said.

Like in MMA, wakeboarding has a local circuit where Cerrone will have to start. He won't make any money at the lower levels. Wakeboarders are pulled behind motor boats on wakeboards, and compete by doing tricks on the board. It's like a mix of surfing, water skiing and snowboarding.

Cerrone, who is fond of riding horses, roping cattle and the like, said worries about getting injured outside of training will not sideline him.

"This summer, I'll definitely be out on the water and riding my horses."

"For me, I'm trying to be a professional wakeboarder. It's just like when I'm trying to be a professional cagefighter. It's not like I'm fooling around, getting drunk and recklessly doing it. It's another professional sport."

But that doesn't mean he'll do it against the UFC's wishes. He will talk with UFC brass.

"I'm going to sit down, and talk with the big guys and sort it all out."

What do you think of Cerrone's plan to become a two-sport athlete? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Lucas Martins thought his manager was pranking him about UFC on FX 7 debut

Lucas Martins is making his UFC debut at UFC on FX 7 on Saturday night as a late add to the card. Justin Salas was injured in training around New Year's Eve, and Martins didn't believe it when he got the call to fill in. He told MMA Junkie he thought his management was pranking him.

"It was New Year's Day," Martins said. "I could not believe my management and the UFC were working on New Year's Day. When they called I thought, 'Is this a joke? This is New Year's Day. No one is working. They are recovering from the celebration."

Now, that would be a mean joke. Hey, Lucas your dream has just come true! Call your friends, your family and everyone who has ever helped you get to the UFC ... oh wait. We're kidding. Pretty sure I'd fire my manager for a joke like that.

But Martins' record is no joke. He's 12-0, and won the last six fights by knockout or submission, making him an interesting test for Edson Barboza.

Gilbert Melendez will get UFC lightweight title shot, Dana White promises

No Strikeforce fighter has suffered more as a result of the dispute between Showtime and UFC president Dana White than Gilbert Melendez.

Many knowledgeable mixed martial arts experts believe the Strikeforce lightweight champion might be the best 155-pound fighter in the world. But since Zuffa's purchase of Strikeforce from Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment in March 2011, has fought just three times and hasn't gotten anywhere near a mega-event.

That is about to change with the demise of Strikeforce after its Jan. 12 show in Oklahoma City. That card will mark the final Strikeforce event as part of an agreement announced earlier this month between Zuffa and Showtime, which televises Strikeforce events.

UFC president Dana White said fighters under contract to Strikeforce would be folded into the UFC. Melendez is injured and unable to defend his title in Oklahoma City next month, so his next fight will be in the UFC.

White told reporters Thursday following the pre-fight press conference for UFC 155 that Melendez's first bout in the UFC would likely be a title shot.

"We'll see, but we'll probably bring him in and give him a title shot," White said.

As usual, White covered a slew of topics in his post-news conference scrum with reporters. Among the other gems:

• White said the UFC would put an event in Puerto Rico before 2014. The UFC last held an event in Puerto Rico in Bayamon on Feb. 16, 1996.

• He confirmed that he has begun casting for a Mexican version of "The Ultimate Fighter" and said the company is still in talk with networks there about a television deal.

The problem, he said, is not introducing the fans to the sport. Mexicans are notorious boxing fans and White said the UFC's market research has shown that there is plenty of interest among them in mixed martial arts. The issue is reaching what he believes is the proper television deal, which he admitted has been harder than expected to accomplish.

"We're dealing with some of these countries where five families run all of Mexico," White said. " ... Once we get the right deal, I know it will be big [among the Mexican fans]."

• White said the UFC's partnership with Fox and its related networks has been "unbelievable." He said Fox officials kept their promise to him and moved the U.S. version of "The Ultimate Fighter" to Tuesday nights on FX beginning with the debut of Season 17 on Jan. 22.

That season will feature light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and former middleweight title contender Chael Sonnen as the coaches.

The UFCs 18-34-year-old male demographic wasn't home to watch Seasons 15 and 16 and the ratings sank dramatically from its pre-FX days on Spike.

"I've said this to you guys a million times, but FX loved us on Friday nights," White said. "But they're good partners and they promised me [they'd change nights if it didn't work out]. They said, 'Let's try to build this on Friday to a point where you're happy with the [ratings]. If it doesn't work out, we'll move you to another night.' And they kept their word."

By going on Tuesday, the UFC will avoid competing directly with Bellator's reality series, which will be held on Thursdays on Spike starting Jan. 17.

• White said 2012 was a good year for the company despite its unbelievable rash of injuries. He said pay-per-view numbers were lower than in 2011, but said the drop wasn't alarming and was not unexpected given the major issues with injuries the company experienced.

TUF 17 Fantasy Preview: Smith Jr. vs. Barnatt

The Ultimate Fighter: Team Jones vs. Team SonnenThe Ultimate Fighter: Jones vs. Sonnen is now in full swing with 14 fighters officially making the house, and the next round kicks off on Tuesday as Team Jones' Gilbert Smith Jr. takes on Team Sonnen's top pick Luke Barnatt.

In their opening fights, Gilbert Smith, who comes from a wrestling and grappling background, dispatched of Eric Wahlin with a powerful arm-triangle choke, while 6'6" Barnatt took care of Nicholas Kohring using his long reach but not without taking some damage along the way, including a noticeably bruised eye.

When the fight was announced, Barnatt mentioned that he hoped to fight a little later in the show due to the bumps and bruises he obtained in the opening bout, but he has no problem being the one with the target on his back as Team Sonnen's No. 1 selection.

While mixed martial arts really is a combination of every form of battle possible, this match-up in a lot of ways comes down to Smith's wrestling and grappling against Barnatt's extreme reach and height advantage.

Even UFC President Dana White noted the huge difference in Barnatt's size compared to Smith, who stands just 5'9", giving up a whopping nine inches in height to British-born fighter Luke Barnatt.

"I don't know why Jon would pick a guy with such height and reach advantages," White said.

What Smith has going for him is a wealth of wrestling and ground experience, having won four fights by way of submission in his career. He's also worked a lot in the past with UFC middleweight Chris Camozzi, who possesses a dangerous stand-up game of his own and stands 6'3" so Smith has sparred with plenty of fighters bigger than him.

On the flipside, Luke Barnatt is a newcomer to MMA by all comparisons, having started training about three years ago with no previous work in martial arts, and looks like the fighter who will do everything in his power to keep this fight standing with his long reach and powerful jab.

Barnatt's ground game isn't suspect though because he's trained many long hours under UFC welterweight John Maguire, the master of Gypsy Jiu-Jitsu, and with the long legs at 6'6" tall, he could use those in a similar fashion to what 7-foot heavyweight Stefan Struve does to his opponents any time he's on his back.

Leading into this fight, Smith has a slight advantage because of his ground game and wrestling, which unfortunately Barnatt just hasn't had the time to master yet in his young stage of development in MMA, and he's coming in a little more beat up than his opponent. Look for Smith to target Barnatt's black eye if he's smart, because if an opponent's vision is even slightly impaired, he could be just a second slower seeing that crucial punch coming in at him.

Don't doubt however that Barnatt could give his opponent fits if Smith can't get inside in the opening moments and take this fight to the ground. It's a toss up fight, and though the odds seem slightly in Gilbert Smith's favor, Barnatt's scrappy attitude and exceedingly long reach could carry him to a win here.

UFC ON FOX 6 PREVIEW: Penick's breakdown and predictions for "Johnson vs. Dodson" event in Chicago

UFC_on_Fox_6_poster_1.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

The UFC returns to Chicago on Saturday night, bringing a Fox event to the United Center for the second straight year. Saturday's card is headlined by a Flyweight Championship bout, but fan interest seems to be focused more on the lightweight bout between Anthony Pettis and Donald Cerrone, as well as Rampage Jackson's expected final UFC bout. All four fights on the main card should provide plenty of action, and we'll start today's preview with the main event:

Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson vs. John Dodson (Flyweight Championship)

"Mighty Mouse" has taken what made him successful at bantamweight and improved upon it in the 125 lb. division. His wrestling game is explosive at times, and he's brought his striking game up a notch from where it was at even a year ago. He's a tough puzzle to figure out for his opponents, because he's hard to hit consistently, he's very durable, and he's nearly impossible to keep down for significant periods of time.

What he is not is a dynamic finisher. He doesn't have any discernible power, and though he's won a number of fights by submission, those wins haven't come against top end competition.

Contrast that with Dodson, who absolutely has stopping power in the flyweight division, as he's shown in two of his three fights in the UFC. He's just as fast, if not faster, than Johnson, and he's got decent enough abilities in the grappling department. Now, five rounds is a lot of time for him to try connecting on a knockout strike, but Johnson has taken some fairly decent shots at times in his career, and he's continued fighting on. His wrestling and grappling game is more suited for this five round fight than is Dodson, and if he can avoid getting hit with a major shot, this is his fight to win. I just can't see Dodson scoring a finish on Saturday, and I think Johnson will make his first successful title defense.

PREDICTION: Johnson via unanimous decision

Quinton "Rampage" Jackson vs. Glover Teixeira (Light Heavyweight)

Jackson fights for what he says will be the last time in the UFC, taking on a fast-rising contender in Brazil's Glover Teixeira. Many believe this to be set up as a star making opportunity for Teixeira, who destroyed Kyle Kingsbury in his debut and demolished Fabio Maldonado en route to a doctor's stoppage in his second UFC bout.

Teixeira's a violent, heavy handed striker, but he's not the technical marvel his most ardent supporters would like to suggest. He leaves himself open to counters and often telegraphs his strikes, which could be an issue against a counter-striker like Rampage.

That said, we haven't seen much from Rampage over the last several years of his UFC career, and he hasn't stopped a fight since knocking out Wanderlei Silva at the end of 2008. It's impossible to suggest he'll show up at his best given his history, a lengthy layoff after knee surgery, and the fact that he's simply ready to be done with the UFC.

More than likely, Teixeira will look to take Jackson down if he can't put him there with his striking on the feet. From there, the ground and pound comes into play, and that's where Jackson could be in a lot of trouble. I don't know that Teixeira stops Rampage, because it hasn't happened in some time from strikes, but I think it's entirely possible, and I'll lean towards a finish on the ground in the second.

PREDICTION: Teixeira via TKO in the second round

Anthony Pettis vs. Donald Cerrone (Lightweight)

This could very well be the best fight of the night, with two fantastically entertaining lightweights squaring off for a chance to move that much closer to title contention. Pettis spent the majority of 2012 recovering from shoulder surgery after a beautiful head kick KO over Joe Lauzon in February, while Cerrone bounced back from a loss to Nate Diaz to take out Jeremy Stephens and Melvin Guillard in succession.

Both fighters possess effective and exciting striking games, Pettis' being the more unique of the two, while Cerrone might have more of an effective track record. They're also considerably skilled on the ground, with 19 submission wins between the two of them.

There's certainly concern on Pettis' part that the layoff could have a negative effect on him, and it certainly halted his momentum after the Lauzon fight, but he's gotten himself fully healthy and feels he's added new weapons to his arsenal as well. Cerrone's been impressive for much of his UFC run, but he's always hit a ceiling in major fights, and despite the considerable skills he brings to the cage, Pettis is just a bit better in every aspect of the game.

Pettis has an edge in the striking game, and I'd give him an edge on the ground if it gets there as well. This is his chance to move close to a title fight, if not wait one out, and I think he gets it done in an exciting return to action.

PREDICTION: Pettis via TKO in the second round

Erik Koch vs. Ricardo Lamas (Featherweight)

Another Roufusport fighter coming off a lengthy layoff returns with a drive to get back into title contention, as Erik Koch looks to move past Ricardo Lamas. Koch was scheduled to face Jose Aldo last year before injuries to both fighters ultimately opened the door for Frankie Edgar, and Koch fights for the first time since September of 2011.

Lamas has been very impressive in the UFC, winning all three of his fights in the Octagon and capping that run off by taking out Hatsu Hioki, who had been as highly ranked as #2 in the division before that matchup.

Koch won both of his fights in the UFC in 2011, moving his run to four straight with his WEC run included. His sole loss came by decision against current #2 Chad Mendes in the WEC, and he brings a diverse and multi-faceted attack into his return. Koch was a grappler first, but has shown off a knack for the striking game as well with consecutive KOs over Francisco Rivera and Raphael Assuncao.

Lamas has skills on the feet as well, though he's certainly a better grappler, and stylistically the two of them match up rather well. It could be a toss up, but I really like Koch's skill set and think he comes back with a vengeance after the layoff.

PREDICTION: Koch via KO in the second round

=====Preliminary Card Quick Picks=====

-T.J. Grant over Matt Wiman via decision
-Hatsu Hioki over Clay Guida via submission in the second round
-Ryan Bader over Vladimir Matyushenko via KO in the first round
-Mike Russow over Shawn Jordan via decision
-Pascal Krauss over Mike Stumpf via decision
-Rafael Natal over Sean Spencer via decision
-Simeon Thoresen over David Mitchell via submission in the first round
