Our coverage of UFC Fight Night 36 rolls along with our recap of tonight’s final bout before our headliners and co-headliners take the stage. Welterweights Erick Silva and Takenori Sato battled it out in front of the partisan crowd but in the end the UFC newcomer would be no match for Silva.
Silva Steamrolls Sato
The night’s biggest underdog would not be given much of a chance for an upset tonight in enemy territory as Takenori Sato faced Erick Silva. After taking a few moments to measure up his opponent, Silva would send the Japanese fighter reeling with a solid body kick. Sato would desperately try for a takedown but Silva poured on the punches, and some wildly creative back heel kicks, to force a stop to the fight.
It was over when:
While the finish came a few moments later, it was a body kick from Silva that put Sato on his heels.
What’s Next?
Sato was in a longshot situation tonight and there really was not much to really judge how good he can be in the UFC and he should get a second shot in the Octagon.
For Silva, there is an abundance of options after former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre left the UFC and the winner of Rory MacDonald and Demian Maia is a good possibility. Another interesting bout could occur if Dong Hyun Kim defeats John Hathaway on March 1, as Silva is likely eager to erase that frustrating loss from his record.
