Our coverage of UFC 170 continues with our recaps of tonight’s FOX Sports 1 preliminary card. In the last bout before the featured FS1 prelim, Raphael Assunção would see his title dreams closer to reality by defeating former RFA champion Pedro Munhoz. In other FS1 action, Aljamain Sterling and Zach Makovsky picked up important wins in the Octagon.
Assunção Tops Munhoz
Raphael Assunção had a trap fight tonight as he faced a very tough newcomer in Pedro Munhoz. While Munhoz found some success early with leg kicks, Assunção proved savvy by switching stances and mixing in some takedowns on his fellow BJJ blackbelt. The Atlanta-based fighter has now won six straight fights and likely finds himself firmly in the bantamweight title discussion. Munhoz did not disappoint in his UFC debut however, and the former RFA standout stood his ground in the short notice fight.
Sterling Defeats Gibson
Aljamain Sterling kept the Serra-Longo fight team rolling with a solid victory in his UFC debut over fellow debutant Cody Gibson. Sterling controlled the majority of the fight with a strong and well-rounded performance that kept the flashier Gibson either out of range or on his back. Sterling stays a perfect 10-0 in his MMA career and could pose an interesting threat in a solid UFC division.
Makovsky Controls Sampo
One-time Bellator MMA bantamweight champion Zach Makovsky continued his successful flyweight run with a solid decision win over Josh Sampo. Makovsky used his solid wrestling background to prevent Sampo from having too much sustained success. Makovsky is now 2-0 in the UFC and could see a boost in competition for his next fight in the Octagon.
