Former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans suffered what manager Glenn Robinson describes as a “freak training accident” that forced him out of next Saturday’s co-main event fight with Daniel Cormier.
Evans injured his knee and will undergo surgery on Monday, Robinson informed MMAjunkie.com. Once that is complete, they will have a better idea when “Suga” can return to action.
“(I’m) not sure how in depth (the surgery will be) until they start the work,” Robinson wrote via text. “Very unfortunate. It’s a sad week here.”
Evans (21-3-1) was looking to position himself for a possible shot at the UFC light heavyweight title by welcoming Cormier to the division. The former Ultimate Fighter winner is 14-3-1 in his Octagon career, including wins over Forrest Griffin, Dan Henderson and Chael Sonnen.
