UFC bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey had her hand raised once again in standard fashion last night at UFC 157, finishing foe Liz Carmouche off with an Armbar in the fight’s first frame. The stoppage was the tenth time in ten total tilts (including three amateur outings) Rousey had tapped an opponent with the technique before the scrap’s second round came into play, yet the moments leading up to her win over Carmouche were anything but typical for “Rowdy” Ronda.
Early in the round, Rousey found herself in Carmouche’s clutches and seemingly at risk of being submitted with a Rear-Naked Choke. However, as the 26-year old told Fuel TV, she never came close to suffering her first defeat.
“On the ground I feel so comfortable in every position I don’t feel I’m ever in danger, so I feel comfortable taking a lot of risks. I felt fine with her on my back. I was thinking more about trying to keep my sports bra up while she was trying to choke me, because I felt very safe and in control even though it didn’t look like that.”
“I knew she would be tough…I was expecting to go five rounds. It could have gone that way. It happened to be that I was in a good position with ten seconds. Ten seconds difference it could have gone to the next round and been very different. So yeah, she was very tough. Much respect to her.”
