Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez has stayed silent long enough, responding to Will Brooks and others via Twitter on Thursday.
Earlier this week, Brooks went on a rant on the social media scene in regards to talk that Alvarez would face Michael Chandler next instead of unifying the belts by meeting him. Brooks defeated Chandler recently after Alvarez suffered a head injury and was forced out.
Reports from Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney himself have indicated that Alvarez – not the promotion – can decide who gets paired up. That’s not exactly how Alvarez sees it.
“I never signed “CONTRACT” it was a “SETTLEMENT,” he posted. “ME and U (fans, friends, etc.), are the same I want what (you) want, tell me (and) I’ll give to ya. Don’t tell just me guys tell Bellator, Bjorn Rebney (I) don’t make fights, I typically end them. ‘The BALL IS in THERE COURT.’
“I’ll never choose usually the fans will voice there opinion to the promoter and I end up getting whoever the crowd chooses.”
He added that it is not “my choice who I fight,” and that if the majority of the fans want to see Alvarez-Brooks, that is “fine by me.”
Alvarez had a lengthy battle with Bellator after his contract expired, as he signed a deal with the UFC. Bellator, though, was allowed to match it and they did, despite some initial hesitation on the wording of the deal. Alvarez and Chandler have met twice, and were set to conclude the trilogy on pay-per-view.
“Whoever’s ranked higher and brings more money (I’ll fight),” he wrote. “Everything else is nonsense.”
Brooks also posted his response to the latest from Alvarez, writing, “I’m with everyone else on this one. Eddie should take the easier fight against me. Take the east W bro and roll out into the sunset.”
It is believed that Alvarez will have the freedom to decide where he fights next – win or lose – after his next bout with Bellator.
