UFC’s Matt Grice released from hospital

Two months after being hospitalized with brain and other injuries following a car accident, UFC featherweight Matt Grice has been released from the hospital. Grice, a full-time Oklahoma City police officer, was hit from behind while off duty and stopped at a red light in early September.

He was immediately hospitalized and underwent brain surgery. A few weeks later, Grice reportedly began moving his limbs again and responding to verbal cues.

On Monday, Grice appeared on The MMA Hour. "I feel pretty good," Grice said.

"I still have the brain injury and stuff, so it's a little different, a longer road. But, physically, I feel okay. My balance is a little off still with the brain injury. But, other than that, I feel pretty good. I was in the hospital for two months and I got to come home a week and half ago to do outpatient rehab. I do rehab in the day and at night I get to go home to my family, it's awesome."

Grice also said that he may have another operation in December to replace part of his skull that was initially removed to relieve pressure on his brain. Despite this, he said that his doctors have not ruled out a return to MMA competition.

UFC Fight Night 33 Set With 10 Bouts To Air On FOX Sports 1, 2

All but two fights scheduled for UFC Fight Night 33 will air on television, as plans were formally announced by the UFC on Tuesday.

Six bouts will go down on FOX Sports 1, including the main event between heavyweights Mark Hunt and Antonio Silva.

Other main card fights on December 6 from Australia include Mauricio “Shogun” Rua vs. James Te Huna and Ryan Bader vs. Anthony Perosh.

Four more fights will air on FOX Sports 2 following a pair of online-only matches.

UFC Champ Chris Weidman pleads case to fight in home state of New York

UFC Middleweight Champion Chris Weidman was on hand this week as the UFC went back to New York City's Madison Square Garden to reveal the results of another economic impact study.

It's the beginning of yet another push towards getting the sport legalized in the state of New York, and Weidman plead his case as a native New Yorker to lawmakers in the state.

"I'm from Baldwin, Long Island and I never left New York," Weidman said (via UFC.com). "I'm born and raised and as New York as it gets. I got my associates degree from Nassau Community College, my bachelors from Hofstra, and my masters from Hofstra University. And recently, I accomplished the thing in my life that I feel is the most important besides getting married to my beautiful wife and having my beautiful children, and that was winning the UFC belt."

"That's good, but there's something really missing, and it kind of takes away from this belt, and that's not being able to participate in my sport – something I'm so passionate about and that I've worked my whole life for – in my home state of New York."

Penick's Analysis: Weidman and others continue to try to showcase themselves in the state, but the sport still hasn't gotten its due as of yet. Hopefully 2014 will be the year, but they need Sheldon Silver and the New York State Assembly to give them that chance. If they do and let a vote go through this year, the UFC will finally be able to make their long awaited trip to MSG.

UFC Heavyweight Champ Cain Velasquez may yet require shoulder surgery

Though it had previously been reported that Cain Velasquez's shoulder injury would not need surgery, he's not out of the woods on that front yet.

It was reported Wednesday that the injury was a torn labrum, and though his manager Bob Cook wouldn't confirm the exact injury, he did reveal in an interview with MMAJunkie.com that surgery may yet be a necessity.

"He's going in to get re-evaluated in a week-and-a-half, and at that point, we'll have a better idea," Cook said. "But it's not 100 percent one way or the other."

As for his return timetable, it's all going to be dependent on whether surgery is required or not. Still, if surgery is not needed, Cook believes the previously discussed April return could be feasible.

"I think it all depends on the injury and how he feels," Cook said. "As soon as he's good to go, he'll fight. I think if he doesn't need surgery, [April] should be a realistic timeframe. Hopefully, when the doctors look at him again, everything is doing what they want it to do, and he won't need surgery and he can get going. But if it's not progressing the way they want it to, then they're going to fix it, and he'll be out for a while."

Penick's Analysis: If surgery is required, that's another Champ on the shelf for a significant portion of 2014. While the UFC is closing 2013 out real strong, it's going to be a rough start to the new year at the same time that they're expanding the amount of events they're running. No one wants to see surgery required here, but it's all going to come down what they find out in his next evaluation.

Bellator’s Lima ‘Surprised’ by Askren’s Departure

Douglas Lima may not have arrived in Bellator with the same level of fanfare that other fighters received, but after going 7-1 in the promotion and winning not one but two tournaments, he’s become of one of it’s biggest names. In fact, the only man to defeat Lima since 2009 is Ben Aksen, but because the former champ has left for free agency, it looks like a rematch isn’t going to happen. Not anytime soon anyways.

So what does Lima think of Askren’s departure? A man who Lima has said publicly he was hoping to fight again? Well, while speaking to MMA Fighting.com recently, here is some of what the 25 year-old said:

“I was kind of (surprised) because he was the undefeated champion and a really tough fighter,” Lima said about Askren. “But he didn’t sell his fights because of his fighting style and I think that’s really important for the promotion. I believe that’s the reason why Bellator didn’t want to fight that much for him.”

“It’s not my fault that he’s out of Bellator and I just want my shot at the title. People can say whatever they want. They can say that (Askren) is the real champion after I beat Hawn, but that doesn’t bother me at all. I just want to beat whoever they put in front of me.”

Lima also relayed he’s not sure if Askren leaving is “good or bad” but added he’s certain the “UFC will sign” the renowned wrestler. As Lima noted, he’ll take on Rick Hawn for the vacant belt, who KO’d Ron Keslar to take the latest welterweight tourney.

“Funky” is expected to meet with the UFC this week, however, UFC boss man Dana White continues to insist the promotion won’t be inking Askren to a contract.
