Chael Sonnen could one day run the UFC, president Dana White says

Chael Sonnen could one day run the UFC, president Dana White says

By: Steven Marrocco June 2, 2014 12:45 pm

BERLIN – He doesn’t see it happening any time soon, but someone will eventually have to replace UFC President Dana White.

Who could do such a job? There’s co-owner/CEO Lorenzo Fertitta and a variety of other executives who already play a big part in directing the company.

There are hundreds of employees around the globe, as well, who perform the day-to-day tasks that keep the MMA juggernaut running.

Who, though, is suited to the job of promoting each and every fight as loudly and passionately as the UFC’s longtime figurehead? Who could keep up with his schedule? Who could battle all the critics and the haters?

Chael Sonnen, said the man he could hypothetically replace.

“I think Chael would be fantastic,” White said. “The thing is with Chael, though, is that he over-exaggerates too much, and you don’t know what’s real and what’s not.”

That’s putting it mildly when speaking about the three-time UFC title contender, whose gift for self-promotion is equalled by an ability to smudge the truth.

Sonnen, after all, once tried to pass off his negative comments about Lance Armstrong on a Mexican impostor. Perhaps that’s the most famous example of his dubious public persona, but certainly not the only one.

Still, when it comes to selling a fight, there’s the UFC president, Sonnen and a bunch of imitators.

“Chael is obviously a passionate guy,” White said. “I think he loves [the sport], and he’s great.”

Now, the question is, could White even convince him to take the job?

“Let me tell you what, Chael has so many opportunities right now, he wouldn’t even have time,” White said. “If I left tomorrow, and they said, ‘Hey, we want you to run this thing,’ he’s got a lot of big opportunities out there right now. It’s wide open for him.”

For now, Sonnen (28-14-1 MMA, 7-6 UFC) is still swinging away in the octagon. On July 5, he takes on Vitor Belfort (24-10 MMA, 13-6 UFC) in UFC 175′s pay-per-view co-headliner. Despite Belfort’s short-notice replacement status following the exit of Wanderlei Silva, White said he is the promotion’s rock.

“The guy never turns down a fight; he never says no,” White said. “Doesn’t matter who it is. I could call him tomorrow and tell him he’s fighting Cain (Velasquez), and he’ll take the fight. He’s the best, man. He’s a great guy. But on the flip side, he’s got a lot of opportunities that others don’t.”

And so, White just might have to hold on a bit longer. But from the sound of it, that’s no big thing.

“People have been predicting my burnout for a very long time,” he said. “It hasn’t happened yet – I don’t see it happening.”

My Top 10 Lists of 2013

I know you guys have question so just ask and don't freak out:
Quote:

This was meant to be done shortly after the Best of 2013 series but delays pushed it back until now. Also in a MMA Freak first this list was made by votes from the MMA Forum website. This will probably be the first but not last of these lists. So with that here we go with the lists:

10. Top 10 scariest fighters in MMA

This list was meant to be the capstone of the 2013 Halloween series. The original criteria was that the fighters had to be physically and psychologically intimidating in some way. While there were some big names on the list such as Brock Lesnar, Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino, and Diego Sanchez just to name a few, I don’t think I was clear in the criteria or message. Plus if I had to do it over again I would probably include names such as Wanderlei Silva. However, it was nominated for the Top 10 Articles of 2013 in the Best of 2013 series.

9. Top 10 Olympians who gave MMA a try

At the time I wrote this list, Olympic wrestling had it’s back against the wall. This list was meant to help support the campaign to save Olympic wrestling. While non-wrestlers were on this list such as Ronda Rousey, Ray Mercer, and Mohammed Ali just to name a few, the list was meant to show that Olympians overall could benefit from MMA. Ultimately the International Olympic Committee chose to keep wrestling over Baseball/Softball and Squash but on the condition that two weight classes be added to women’s Olympic freestyle. Overall I think it was a good list and it was fun listing legends such as Randy Couture and Don Frye and well as wrestlers like Alexander Karelin.

8. Top 10 Boxers to Crossover into MMA

This list was written to recognize the elite in boxing who gave MMA a try. There were big name fighters on the list such as Mohammed Ali, Ray Mercer, and James Toney. Also on the list are those who have actually done well in MMA such as Holly Holm and surprisingly Eric “Butterbean” Esch. However, I did leave out some notables such as Jessica Rakoczy. It would look different with a do over.

7. Top 10 MMA promotions that could be on Showtime soon

There was hope at the time that I wrote this list that Showtime would pick up another MMA promotion as a broadcast partner. Since then the prospects have dwindled and in all likelihood MMA will probably never return to the premium cable network anytime soon. However, it was good to look over several of the at the time top second tier promotions. Some of the promotions listed have made big deals like Invicta FC’s deal with UFC Fight Pass, and Titan FC’s deal with CBS Sports Network. Supposedly XFC will be making a television deal soon.

6. Top 10 overrated fighters in MMA

The 2013 Halloween series lists was definitely a fun one to do and this was one of the better lists in that series. In every sport there will always be overrated fighters and without a doubt MMA is no exception. Included in this list were some of the classics such as Joe Son, Thomas Ramirez, and John Matua who all made appearances during the UFC’s early no holds barred tournaments. Then there were also the contemporaries on the list such as Houston Alexander and James Irvin. However, the man who topped the cake was Kimbo Slice.

5. Top 10 MMA fighters turned Hollywood actors

Any of the lists from this point on are some of the more higher viewed lists of 2013 and there is a reason why this one was in that group. This list covered those fighters who’s crossing into some big screen appearances. At the time names such as Georges St.-Pierre and Ronda Rousey were only mentioned as having upcoming roles which is still the case with Rousey. However, there were names on the list such as Gina Carano, Randy Couture, and Bas Rutten that are more recognizable. Watching these their flicks is also fun.

4. Top 10 scariest MMA injuries

Another installment of the 2013 Halloween series, this list was all about shock factor. Injuries in any sport can be brutal and ugly (literally), but in MMA it has a whole different meaning. Among the injuries were Randy Couture‘s flying tooth, Miesha Tate‘s dislocated elbow, and Rich Franklin‘s smashed nose just to name a few. Then there are the broken bones like Tim Sylvia‘s forearm and Corey Hill‘s leg. A lot of these injuries are brutal but since then there have been some more brutal injuries such as Anderson Silva‘s leg that could be added.

3. Top 10 worst weight cutters in MMA

This was only my second list and as such I’m proud that it’s so highly viewed. However, the topic is one that is rather serious in that it covers those who failed to make weight at the weigh-ins. In some cases the said fighters shouldn’t have been fighting at that weight like Anthony Johnson who after missing weight at both welterweight and middleweight is now fighting at light heavyweight. Then there are those who had no excuse to making weight like Gina Carano and Thiago Santos. In a revision Ricardo Mayorga would make the list.

2. Top 10 over-hyped MMA reality show fighters who went bust

So this was my very first list and it was also my first big success. I had always been fascinated by participants on The Ultimate Fighter who had potential but then faltered at some point in their career. However, because Fight Master had just come out at the time I made it a reality list so I could include those who participated in that show. Some notable names on the list included that of Uriah Hall, Jesse Taylor, and Kendall Grove just to name a few. Since then however, people like Hall and Taylor have been making career comebacks.

1. Top 10 men who influenced MMA-Including Sherlock Holmes

Being a history buff I wrote this list to reflect the long history of MMA. Included in this list were some familiar men like Dana White and Rorion Gracie who took part in the UFC in some way. Then you had those legends like Helio Gracie, Antonio Inoki, and Bruce Lee who all had a part in influencing MMA in the technique part. I am very proud of this list even though it isn’t one of my most viewed. I’m not the only one who thought it was well written as it was ranked number four on the Top 10 Articles of 2013 list in January.

If you would like the opportunity to participate in another one of these voting lists register at the MMA Forum. Leave a comment!

Jeremy Stephens Has Sights Set On KO At UFN San Antonio

Jeremy Stephens doesn’t believe there is an area inside the Octagon where Cub Swanson will give him fits.

The two meet this Saturday night in the main event of UFC Fight Night from San Antonio and the AT&T Center. The winner could make a great case for a future UFC featherweight title fight, as Stephens is 3-0 since dropping down to the division.

“I can strike with him, I can ground-and-pound him, I can out-wrestle him,” said Stephens, during a recent interview with FOX Sports, “I can get back up to my feet and I can submit him. I know I can beat this guy.”

Stephens (23-9), who turned 28 years old in May, has defeated Darren Elkins, Rony Jason via knockout with a head kick and Estevan Payan since a string of defeats at lightweight. He lost a split decision to current UFC champion Anthony Pettis and another decision to Donald Cerrone before being finished by Yves Edwards and deciding to drop down in weight.

With 15 victories via knockout, Stephens feels he can finish off Swanson within the distance.

“When I hit people, it’s not a flash knockout where they get back up,” Stephens said. “I hit people where it’s like, ‘What happened?’ The coaches have to wake them up.

“That’s just a difference in power.”

Tyron Woodley believes he can secure title shot at UFC 174

UFC president Dana White has said that the winner of Matt Brown and Robbie Lawler next month will determine who fights welterweight champion Johny Hendricks next. However, Tyron Woodley isn't quite convinced.

“I don’t think anybody is getting awarded anything,” Woodley recently told MMAjunkie Radio. “This is the UFC. You don’t think they can switch that and change the promos on the spot? I think it’s performance-based.”

Woodley himself fights Rory MacDonald this Saturday at UFC 174. In the St. Louis fighter's mind, he can leap-frog either Brown or Lawler if he manages to put away MacDonald impressively in his home town of Vancouver this weekend.

“I think the best performance is going to get a title shot,” Woodley said.

“My goal is really to focus on beating Rory MacDonald in a dominant fashion – to go up to Vancouver and do my thing. Everything else, whether they give me a shot or not, I’m eventually going to win the world title. I’m going to be in the title picture...I just need to focus on this kid because if I go out there and I don’t win, then I’m not getting a world title anyway.”

Although the right call would indeed seem to be for the winner of Brown vs. Lawler to get the next welterweight title, Woodley has a point when he says things can change rapidly in the UFC. Who would you rather see fight Hendricks when he comes back from his injured biceps?

6/22 EVENING UPDATE: Penick's WSOF 10 Notebook; White shuts down Hendricks on idea of Weidman bout; Gustafsson updates fight result tattoo; ref McCarthy comments on ref-pushing incident and punishment; more

SUNDAY 6/22 EVENING UPDATE

If you're tuning in to the App for the first time in a while, make sure to check out the big update on the App's home page for notes and information on the changes made to the new mobile site at MMATorch.com in your mobile browser. Our tech team has been working on even more tweaks based on your feedback, and have optimized the site for Safari and the default Android browser. They're continuing to work on the same for both Chrome and Opera as well. Keep sending your thoughts in to mmatorch@gmail.com so we can make the mobile site the best experience for you! We truly appreciate the feedback, and we're making changes as necessary. Here's what's on the site today:

-I gave some further lingering thoughts on last night's World Series of Fighting 10 event today in a new notebook piece. Excerpt: “On the production side of things, Todd Harris continues to be an embarrassment. In the fifth round of Aguilar-Fujino, he was positing that people might want to see a rematch if Aguilar couldn't finish the fight. In the Luiz Firmino-Tyson Griffin fight, while talking about Firmino's last win, said it came against "Yacob" Volkmann; not Jacob, "Yacob." And he said it as if he thought that was the correct pronunciation for some foreign opponent that Firmino had beaten, perhaps not even realizing he had called that fight himself.” The full article is in the main listing at our mobile site at MMATorch.com in your phone or tablet browser.

-UFC President Dana White and UFC Welterweight Champion Johny Hendricks were both on Inside MMA on AXS TV on Friday, where Hendricks attempted to broach the subject of a superfight with Chris Weidman. White essentially shut him down, letting him know he's got a lot left ahead of him before he's thinking about fights outside of his weight class. Here's one of those times I definitely agree with White. See his comments with further thoughts in the main listing now.

-Referee “Big” John McCarthy chimed in on the ref pushing incident from Jason High at UFC Fight Night 42 earlier this month, with McCarthy of the belief that he's been punished too harshly by both the UFC and the New Mexico State Athletic Commission. Catch his comments with further thoughts in the main listing.

-Alexander Gustafsson added to his arm tattoo this weekend, where he has his own creative way of keeping track of the wins and losses on his record. He has triangles representing each result, and he has something a little bit in between for the loss to Jon Jones, as he believes he won the fight. Check it out with some additional thoughts in the main listing.

-Invicta's Ediane Gomes had some harsh words this week for the female competitors in the UFC, whom she accuses of caring more about “showing their asses” than for actually fighting. See her comments with some additional thoughts in response in the main listing.

-Louis Gaudinot released a statement denying any wrong doing after the news came out this weekend that he'd failed a drug test for diuretics out of his March win over Phil Harris. However, he's still accepting the UFC's punishment of a six month suspension. Further thoughts in the main listing.

We thank all of our readers for their feedback and patience as we continue making improvements on the new mobile site. We're an independent voice in the MMA space with no corporate backing, and as such we stay afloat on ad revenue. This shift to the full listing on mobile web brings us a better chance to keep ourselves going and to bring our readers everything we have for the last five years and more, as the mobile advertising market is simply stronger than that on the app. Continue sending us your feedback to mmatorch@gmail.com and let us know how the new features with the Disqus comments section and more are working for you on mobile web!

One-Time UFC Title Contender Issues Challenge

Former U.S. Olympic silver medalist Sara McMann wants to test her skills against an ex-Strikeforce female champion next.

While attending a local MMA event in South Carolina recently, McMann was interviewed inside the cage. During the interview, McMann issued a challenge to Sarah Kaufman for a future fight.

“I hope to fight Sarah Kaufman next,” McMann said.

McMann (7-1) suffered her first loss this past February when she was finished by Ronda Rousey for the UFC female bantamweight title. Kaufman (17-2) is unbeaten in her last six fighting, going 5-0 with one no-contest. Her lone loss during that stretch also came at the hands of Rousey.

Hear what McMann had to say in the video below:

WSOF 10 scores highest rated show: 365K viewers

MMA Payout has learned from a Nielsen source that Saturday’s WSOF 10 on NBC Sports Network received its largest viewing audience ever with 365,000 tuning in to see David Branch defeat Jesse Taylor in the main event.

WSOF 1 – 198,000 viewers

WSOF 2 – 210,000 viewers

WSOF 3 – 201,000 viewers

WSOF 4 – 264,000 viewers

WSOF 5 – 227,000 viewers

WSOF 6 – 161,000 viewers

WSOF 7 – 94,000 viewers

WSOF 8 – 212,000 viewers

WSOF 9 – 242,000 viewers

WSOF 10 – 365,000 viewers

Payout Perspective:

I found it interesting that NBCSN decided to air boxing as a lead-in to WSOF instead of its prelims which aired on the NBCSN App.  The 365,000 viewer average is a good sign that the organization is growing.  There were two other options on Saturday night for combat sports fans (Glory PPV, Boxing on Showtime) and WSOF had its best night without really top names in the company.  This bodes well for its debut on NBC on July 5th.

Nick Diaz: 'Anderson Silva should fire his trainer'

Retired Chillin' UFC welterweight Nick Diaz doesn't agree with those who believe that injured former champ Anderson Silva is finished. According to the Stockton native, his possible next opponent Silva simply needs to hire better coaches.

"I'll tell you what, I think he should fire his trainer and hire himself a boxing trainer that teaches him how to put punches out," Diaz said in a wonderfully strange and quick interview with Fight Hub TV.

"I don't talk no [expletive]. I aint trying to talk no [expletive]. Of course he's got as many fights as he wants to have, but people saying [expletive] like, 'He should retire. He's not going to be the same.' I'm like, 'Fire your coach and get somebody to train your punches.'"

According to Diaz, Silva was foolish to simply start winging leg kicks without setting them up with punches in his last bout against UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman.

"Anderson Silva should've used his hands much more to strike Weidman because Weidman was dropping his hands and chin was straight up," he said.

"There were several instances of using punches would've been more effective than the leg kicks on the second match...That was the key. Putting punches out there but he had no punches for that guy. So then he started lobbing kicks out there and you saw what happened to his leg. He didn't have no answer for it."

Do you agree with Diaz that Silva should bring in new coaches? Let us know in the comments section.

But please, adhere to Diaz' own standards and don't "talk no [expletive]." There's no place for that on the internet.

Court sets schedule for Summary Judgment Motions in New York

With the New York Assembly not voting on a bill to legalize pro MMA in the state, the focus turns to Zuffa’s lawsuit against the state.  A court order issued late last week will allow the parties to file Motions for Summary Judgment by July 3rd.

The remaining cause of action left from Zuffa’s lawsuit filed back in November 2011 is the claim that the present law banning MMA in the state is unconstitutionally vague.  The Court dismissed the previous claims upon New York’s Motion to Dismiss.

The parties have until July 3rd to file a motion which would dismiss the final claim and end the lawsuit if filed by New York.  Zuffa has the option of filing its own motion which may leave an opening for a possible settlement.

Responses to the initial Summary Judgment Motions are due on July 17th with Replies to those Response Motions by July 31st.

H/t:  Jim Genia

Payout Perspective:

Spoiler Alert.  There will be a Motion for Summary Judgment.  The end to this lawsuit could be near.  Or, we could be hunkering down for more briefing.  Discovery has closed for all intents and purposes and if the Court is not persuaded to dismiss the lawsuit on New York’s Summary Judgment motion, we will be getting ready for a trial.

If you were wondering how long after the Court receives the papers will the Judge make a decision.  The lawyerly answer to that is: it depends.  But if you want some guidance.  New York filed its Motion to Dismiss in October 2012, a hearing did not take place until February 2013 and the ruling was not issued until late September 2013.  Thus, we could wait almost a year for a ruling.  Hopefully, it may happen sooner.  But, we may be through another legislative session in New York before a ruling.

MMA Payout will keep you posted.

Jon Jones: 'The UFC tried to bully me'

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones spoke up today about the UFC's public pressure tactics to get him to sign to rematch Alexander Gustafsson. The UFC had originally hoped to have the pair fight each other this August in a rematch of their spectacular title bout last fall.

The UFC announced the rematch before the champion had agreed to the fight or date. UFC president Dana White trashed Jones in public and helped lend a megaphone to Gustafsson's claims of cowardice from the title-holder.

Ultimately, Jones signed to fight Gustafsson again, but at the later date of September 27. Jones today told MMA Fighting that the UFC tried to bully him into signing for the rematch on their terms.

"I just kind of identified it with being a like strong-arm technique on their part, trying to get fans pushing for a fight and prematurely announcing a fight," he said.

Jones claimed that, when the UFC originally announced the August 30 rematch date, they hadn't even run the date by him prior. "It's not that I haven't signed a contract, I hadn't even heard that date before," he said.

"I thought it was unprofessional, I thought it was a bullying technique, bully style, I don't know what it was. But it is what it is."

Jones went on to say that his relationship with the UFC is "healthy," once again. And, in a move that surely delighted the UFC, Jones also said that he will involve his manager less in communication with the promotion.

"I think we are in a very healthy spot," Jones said.

"We actually talked about being in contact more often and things like that. Instead of going through my managers to talk about things, we'll have a more open line of communication. I'm really happy about that. I feel like we're in a very open and honest place right now."

UFC and Brandon Vera split ways after nine-year run

http://mmajunkie.com/2014/06/ufc-rel...-nine-year-run

Brandon Vera‘s long and often-tumultuous run in the UFC has come to an end. For now, anyway.

The organization has severed ties the veteran heavyweight and light heavyweight after a 16-fight, nine-year run, FOXSports.com first reported.

Vera (12-7 MMA, 8-7 UFC), 36, ended his long UFC run on a 1-4 skid (with one no-contest), which included a loss to heavyweight Ben Rothwell in his final bout, which came in August at UFC 164.

The heavyweight bout followed a nine-fight run at light heavyweight, where Vera fought (but lost to) notables such as Randy Couture, Jon Jones and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.

Despite the late-career setbacks, Vera entered the UFC in 2005 and quickly emerged as one of the organization’s most promising prospects.

During a 4-0 start to his UFC career, which included a 69-second destruction of ex-champ Frank Mir, Vera boldly claimed he would hold titles in both the heavyweight and light heavyweight divisions. With the bravado and those four stoppage victories, which included three in the first round, he was a breath of fresh air in a sputtering heavyweight division that lacked marketable stars.

However, a yearlong contract dispute ultimately spoiled plans for a title shot, and after subsequent losses to Tim Sylvia and Fabricio Werdum, he never got his shot at the belt and ultimately dropped to light heavyweight.

Vera initially found success and went on a 3-1 run. However, then came the 1-4 skid as he faced a slew of elite 205-pounders to close out his UFC career.

Stefan Struve returns to action against Matt Mitrione at UFC 175

http://www.mmafighting.com/2014/5/8/...one-at-ufc-175

Stefan Struve (25-6) returns to action for the first time since discovering he had a serious heart condition, when he faces Matt Mitrione (7-3) in a heavyweight contest that was announced for UFC 175 on July 5 in Las Vegas.

Struve's career appeared to be in grave jeopardy when it was diagnosed he was suffering from an aortic valve leak and enlarged heart. The condition made it impossible to train at near full efficiency. Even so, Struve was on a four-fight winning streak before being knocked out by Mark Hunt in his last fight in Japan on March 3, 2013.

"I was missing about 30 to 40 percent oxygen rich blood with every heartbeat," said Struve on UFC Tonight. "So my heart had to work a lot harder than it was supposed to. With blood pressure medication, they were able to get the chamber smaller again and the opening got smaller and the leak got smaller. My heart is better and I'm in the best shape ever. I feel amazing. I have energy for days.

Struve, at 7-feet tall, is the tallest fighter in UFC history. He had just recently gotten clearance to return.

He had noticed he would fatigue quickly in training and in fights, saying he felt stronger at the start of training camp
than at the end.

Mitrione, a former star football player at Purdue who had a brief NFL career is coming off a first round knockout win over Shawn Jordan on the March 1 show in Macau, China. Mitrione is one of the best athletes in UFC's heavyweight division, who didn't even start fighting until the age of 31. He was handicapped by a late start, but has made a name for himself with good power, scoring six knockouts in his seven wins, and has great agility for a 260-pounder. But he's giving away significant height, reach and fighting experience, as well as being ten years older.

Struve turned 26 earlier this year, while Mitrione will turn 36 ten days after the fight.

The fight strengthens what is already UFC's biggest marquee card of 2014, with Chris Weidman vs. Lyoto Machida for the middleweight title, Ronda Rousey vs. Alexis Davis for the women's bantamweight crown, and Wanderlei Silva vs. Chael Sonnen.

[VIDEO] Most extreme sport ever: Full Contact Skydiving

Ever watch a skydiving video or an MMA fight video and think, 'wow, those guys and girls are crazy. I'd never do that,'? Well, here at Cagewriter we can relate more to the desire to get in a ring or cage and fight for sport than we can to jumping out of planes recreationally, but apparently now there's no need to choose between the two adrenaline rushes.

In the video above, former MMA world champion Urijah Faber coaches skydivers in what would have to be considered one of the most extreme, and stupid, sports of all time - Full Contact Skydiving. The whole concept is a ruse, but still, it's a funny, good watch.

The stuff out of action movies, Faber coaches skydivers on how to fight one another in the air, as they hurtle towards earth and blinding speeds. "Fan out, guys. Work on your fan out," Faber coaches, hilariously.

"The biggest weapon in the air, is gravity."

Indeed. Check out these nut-jobs actually jump out of planes and engage in a "savage ballet," in the air.

Here's the question - If it were a real thing, would you do Full-Contact Skydiving?

WSOF champion Jessica Aguilar: 'I'm number one'

Sure, you could look at Jessica Aguilar’s fight tape, the fact that she hasn’t lost for nearly four years, career-defining victories over legends or her World Series of Fighting (WSOF) straw weight world title and get a sense of just how good the American Top Team fighter is. Or, you could spend five minutes with her.

That’s about how long it takes to realize that the MMA fighter has a true champion’s mentality. Cagewriter sat down with Aguilar this week as she prepared to defend her WSOF belt against Emi Fujino for what we thought would be a casual conversation.

About thirty seconds into our questions, however, Aguilar took lighthearted exception with some of our phrasing. Without much thought, we mentioned that Aguilar is almost unanimously considered to be the best female straw weight fighter in the world, and that did it.

“What do you mean almost unanimously?” she exclaimed, incredulously.

“Who has anyone else ranked as number one? Who else could be ranked above me?”

That’s perhaps half of Aguilar’s champion attitude. There are no small things to champions, be they training tasks or designations hard-fought for.

It takes audaciousness to be a champion. It takes single-minded and passionate work fueled by one’s for your work and belief in self that borders on arrogance to convince someone they can make a living fighting others in a ring or cage.

Aguilar has that audacity in spades.

She’s also got the humility that the true greats balance, seemingly paradoxically, with that confidence. Champions are confident, sure, but true confidence comes from knowing that your skills and reflexes have been tempered in the white-hot heat of training and battle, time and again.

It also takes humility for a fighter to realize that they need to continue to do the daily grunt work in order to improve their skills and maintain their status.  Jessica Aguilar knows that she’s the best straw weight in the world, because she’s worked for it.

Perhaps that’s why Aguilar was excited, not threatened, when she heard that the UFC was instituting their own straw eight division, to be effectively kick-started by an upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter.

That season will crown a champion for the promotion. Though the UFC women will undoubtedly receive more attention than Aguilar will, as a part of the young WSOF organization, the champ is happy for every one of her would-be rivals.

“I’m stoked for them,” she says.

“I want everyone to do well, if they can. Just because I have goals for myself doesn’t mean that I don’t want anyone else to succeed in life. This means more opportunities for everyone, and that’s a good thing.”

Aguilar sees herself as a leader and example for young girls to even other professional fighters. “ I want to show that you can do it,” she explains.

“I just started this eight and a half years ago. I want to tell girls who may not have even started Jiu Jitsu class yet, if I’m here, just eight and a half years after my first class, you can do it, too.”

With that attitude, Aguilar displays a maturity and benevolence about as impressive as her nasty arm-triangle choke. Still, she’s a fighter, and one with an important bout tomorrow.

Should she walk away with her WSOF belt as she plans, Aguilar wants the MMA-sphere to remember exactly who she is – the best in the world. By the end of this year, the UFC will likely crown their first-ever straw weight champion, but “Jag” says that won’t change who the real champ is.

“When you’re number one, it’s not something that they can take away from you, without beating you,” she says.

“[The UFC champion] may start to get more recognition or credit because the promotion has a bigger voice and machine, but that won’t change what I’ve done or who I am. And, who I am is number one.”

Jarrell Miller ready to ‘bring hell’ against Mirko ‘Cro Cop’

Jarrell Miller wasn’t sure he’d ever kick box again. After losing a controversial decision to legendary kick boxer and MMA fighter Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic last March in the Croation’s home town of Zagreb, Miller went back to professional boxing.

And, though he badly wanted another crack at Cro Cop, the American never thought he’d get the chance to beat him more convincingly. That all changed when the former Pride title challenger had originally scheduled Glory 17 opponents pull out of a fight with him this weekend.

Miller, fresh off a boxing win, got the call to fly from his home of New York, to LA and rematch Cro Cop in the star’s kickboxing American debut. Though Miller hadn’t fought a kickboxing bout in nearly a year and a half, he didn’t hesitate to accept.

“It I about getting revenge,” he tells Cagewriter.

“We all saw what happened in the first fight. He got the gift decision in his home town.”

Miller certainly feels that he deserved the decision against Cro Cop in the finals of that Grand Prix tournament in Croatia last year, but the American boxer also knows there’s ways in which he could have, and will be Saturday, better.

“I’m going to keep the pressure on and stay calm,” he says.

“And I’m going to enjoy the fact that we won’t be in a tournament. I can focus all my energy on one fight, one guy, and I’m going to bring it. It’s going to be hell on Saturday.”

Royce Gracie tells us why he really dislikes Eddie Bravo "Drugs"

Royce spoke to us and told us why he really dislikes Eddie Bravo

"My issue with him is simple. I don't like because he endorses (drugs). It's nothing to do with (which) jiu jitsu he uses, gi (or) no gi, it's because of what he endorses. We teach kids. His message out there is 'it's ok for you to do drugs'."

I disagree with this personally because Eddie Bravo's stuff actually motivated me to get into BJJ. Mostly because two buddies of mine, Resin and Chickenjorge were discussing Bravo and his techniques on the podcast, Resin was actually one of the first people to mention Bravo on this forum and Jorge is a student at 10th planet.

XFC logo e1397773418604 XFCi 4 Controversy: Integrity & Honor PrevailThe XFCi 4 Main Event results have been the subject of many media reports and have generated a massive response from MMA fans worldwide. The bout shown live on REDE TV! in Sao Paulo, Brasil, featured Waylon Lowe 14-5 (USA) vs Marcos dos Santos 21-11 (Brazil) and was initially declared a split decision win for dos Santos. However, circumstances evolving around the scoring and judging of the bout instigated an immediate and thorough investigation. The results of the investigation lead to a suspension and dismissal of a judge in the bout and the fight was ruled a NO CONTEST.

XFC International President, Myron D Molotky, issued the following statement:

“The opinions have been very strong and passionate about the initial decision after the bout. I am very proud that the comments are not nationalistic…the opinions are coming from knowledgeable MMA fans and journalists, primarily Brazilians.

XFC International and REDE TV! embrace a position of Integrity and Honor. We are pleased that the executives and legal team with the federation, CBMMA, have taken the same stance. CBMMA has completed an investigation into the judging and scoring of this bout, and rightfully have officially declared the bout a NO CONTEST. We appreciate that the federation has served the MMA fans and fighters with a thorough and timely response.

XFC is appreciative and deeply respectful to both fighters, Waylon Lowe and Marcos dos Santos, for their efforts in the fight. Most importantly, their efforts towards social responsibility throughout the week have had a strong impact in the community.”

Injured UFC champ Johny Hendricks ready for whoever

Welterweight champion Johny Hendricks appeared on UFC Tonight this week and addressed the topic of who he may fight next. Top contenders Robbie Lawler and Matt Brown are set to face one another with a title shot on the line.

Right below them, Tyron Woodley and Rory MacDonald will also square up against one another. Hendricks, who is still recovering from a torn biceps injury, says that he simply doesn't care who he fights next.

"You know, realistically, I don't care," he said.

"I'm going to have to fight one of them. I'm going to have to fight Lawler again or Brown, or Rory MacDonald or Tyron Woodley. Again, doesn't matter. Doesn't matter."

Hendricks went on to say that Lawler vs. Brown is too close to call and that he could also see MacDonald vs. Woodley going either way. "Tyron Woodley could easily wrestle him or out-strike him," he began.

"Or, Rory MacDonald could keep him at bay with that jab like he did to a couple of other guys."

When asked by UFC Tonight co-host Chael Sonnen if he still thinks about Georges St. Pierre, Hendricks was to the point. "I don't," he said.

Hendricks lost a controversial decision to St. Pierre before then winning the vacant title after St. Pierre vacated his belt and took a leave of absence from competition.

Now, St. Pierre is once more recovering from a torn ACL, and will be out for some time, even if he intends to return to fighting at some point in the future. Whatever GSP ends up doing, Hendricks says he isn't too concerned.

"I'd love to have the rematch - don't get me wrong," he concluded.

"But, if [St. Pierre] never came back, it wouldn't bother me none. I'm trying to make my own legacy and if he's part of it, that would be great. If not, I don't care."

Who are you hoping to watch Hendricks defend his belt first? Let us know in the comments section.

You don't need to include any reference to ninjashoes or End of Days Radio. If you just post the interview it would help us out a lot since I am not allowed in that community any more.

If you could title it "Mitch Clarke Talks Fight of the Night D'arce Choke". That would be a good ambiguous title.

I would like to share this awesome interview with the world as well as help our bro Mitch get more fans.

If no one is able to, I understand but it would help us out a ton.

WWE fires 8 men and a Diva

http://prommanow.com/2014/06/12/brea...en-and-a-diva/

Here is a list of talents the WWE has fired. The most shocking are Aksana, Brodus Clay, Evan Bourne due to his impending return, and wasted potential in Drew McIntyre. My pick for the next releases are Great Khali, Tyson Kidd, and Zack Ryder, and the official announcement of CM Punk’s departure.

*Drew McIntyre
* Jinder Mahal
* Aksana
* Curt Hawkins
* Theodore Long
* Camacho
* Brodus Clay
* Evan Bourne
* Yoshi Tatsu
* Referee Marc Harris
