Let’s just face it, Jake Ellenberger (pictured) vs. Tarec Saffiedine simply isn’t meant to be. After an undisclosed injury forced Saffiedine out of his UFC 172 tango with Ellenberger, “The Juggernaut” will now battle Robbie Lawler at UFC 173.
The UFC confirmed the switcheroo Friday afternoon.
Ellenberger and Saffiedine were originally slated to meet at UFC Fight Night Singapore in January, but Ellenberger had to withdraw that time after hurting his hamstring.
Ellenberger and Lawler are looking to ounce back from losses. Ellenberger most recently dropped a unanimous decision to Rory MacDonald in July. However, Ellenberger has won eight of his past 10 bouts.
Lawler, meanwhile, is trying to rebound from this month’s decision defeat to Johny Hendricks for the vacant welterweight title at UFC 171. “Ruthless” is victorious in three of his past four outings.
MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada hosts the May 24 festivities.
