Jussier Formiga took full-advantage of Scott Jorgensen coming in too close and butting heads, choking him out at UFC Fight Night 38 Sunday in Brazil.
The native of Natal, Formiga nearly blew the roof off the building when Jorgensen tapped to the rear-naked choke.
“I am very happy I was able to finish (the fight) in my hometown, in front of my home crowd,” he said. “My whole team is here.”
Formiga (16-3) scored his eighth career submission, but first since joining the UFC in 2012. He entered the promotion having won 14 of 15 career fights, but went just 1-2 in his first three – with both losses coming via finish to former title contenders John Dodson and Joseph Benavidez.
The former Shooto South American 123-pound champion, Formiga quickly transitioned to the back after taking Jorgensen – an ex-NCAA wrestler at Boise State University – down for the second time in the first round.
“I had a great training camp and felt very confident on my feet,” Formiga said. “I am going to try and exchange on the feet more and more.”
