Former WEC announcer Joe Martinez tapped for octagon debut at UFC on FX 6
Martinez recently revealed to Examiner.com that he has been hired for in-cage duties at next month's UFC on FX 6 event, which takes place on Saturday, Dec. 15 in Australia but due to the time difference airs live in the U.S. on Friday night.
Promotion mainstay Bruce Buffer is set for his familiar announcing role that same weekend at The Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale.
Dana White knows 'for a fact' that GSP will return
Georges St. Pierre has been annoyingly but understandably coy and vague about whether or not he will ever return to the UFC and MMA competition. The long-time welterweight champion vacated his title shortly after a controversial decision win over Johny Hendricks last fall, and took a leave of absence from the sport.
This week, UFC president Dana White told reporters assembled in Dallas for Saturday's UFC 171 card that he was certain St. Pierre would return to action at some point.
"I know for a fact he will [come back]," White said Thursday.
Initially, St. Pierre said that his reasons for leaving were personal issues in his life that he needed to sort out, then that he was too stressed from the burdens of being champion and then, suddenly, that performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) and their prevalence in the UFC and MMA was a significant reason as to why he walked away. White went on to say that PED use was not, in his opinion, why GSP decided to hang up his gloves and so Nevada and California's recent effective bans on testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), for example, likely would not have a large bearing on if and when the former champ returned.
"That's not why he's gone," White went on.
"He's not gone because of TRT or any of that stuff. He's gone because he had personal problems that he needed to deal with. A lot of that stuff got blown out of proportion. He's gone because of the reason he sat down with me and Lorenzo that night and told us."
White did not elaborate on the "fact" that made him so certain that St. Pierre will decide to return to fighting but he admitted that he isn't happy to have his biggest star on the shelf.
"Is it fun for Georges St-Pierre to be gone? I mean, no, I wouldn't say that it's fun for him to be gone," White said.
"But the welterweight division is exciting right now, and when Georges does come back, whoever's standing there, it will be a fun fight."
Johny Hendricks and Robbie Lawler meet in the main event of UFC 171 Saturday in Dallas to crown a new welterweight world champion.

Will Chope released by UFC because of 2009 assault conviction
This morning, Cagewriter received an email from UFC officials announcing that the promotion had decided to cancel the scheduled featherweight bout between Will Chope and Diego Brandao for tonight's Fight Night card in Brazil. The reason being that the UFC only recently found out that Chope was served with a bad conduct discharge from the Air Force and given five months confinement for repeatedly verbally and physically assaulting his then-wife back in 2009.
Brazilian outlet Globo first reported about Chope's military history. Today, the UFC announced their response.
"Tonight's featherweight bout between Will Chope and Diego Brandao has been canceled after UFC officials were made aware of Chope's previous military conviction. The UFC does not condone behavior of this nature whatsoever and Chope has been released from his contract. Brandao will receive both his show and win money for the bout," the UFC's statement read.
The 23 year-old Chope last fought and lost in the UFC against Max Holloway in January via TKO. Brandao last fought and lost to Dustin Poirier in late 2013.

The Sunday Junkie: Nov. 25 edition
This week, The Sunday Junkie got reams of entries on the potential fight between the UFC's middleweight and welterweight champs, which could be in the works after St-Pierre's win over Carlos Condit at UFC 154.
But this week's Canadian winner, "A-shock," from London, Ontario, has some interesting ideas on how to infuse new life into the UFC's reality series, "The Ultimate Fighter."

Glover Teixeira - 'Jones has to worry about me.'
Despite his owning a twenty fight win-streak and going unbeaten since 2005, not many pundits are giving Glover Teixeira much of a chance to dethrone UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones when they face off in Baltimore, April 26th. The Chuck Liddell protege, however, himself feels like the favorite heading into the big bout.
"I have the power to beat him," he recently told Inside MMA (video below).
"I have to believe that my skills will work against his skills."
Glover went on to say that he hasn't spent much effort finding sparring partners who could imitate the rangy and dynamic Jones because, well, the Brazilian simply isn't all that worried about what the champ can do to him. "I don't really worry about him," Teixeira claimed.
"In my mind, man, he has to worry about what I'm going to do to him...I believe that April 26th, I'm going to go over there and knock this guy out."
Do you believe that Teixeira has a shot at beating Jones? Let us know in the comments section.

Steve Carl - Keep your mind on the fight
On October 26, 2013, Steve Carl upset Josh Burkman to become the first ever World Series of MMA champion. As his arm was raised by the referee following Carl’s fourth round triangle submission win, it was the first time the fighter had ever had a title belt wrapped around his waist.
The moment was a special one. Just don’t try and get Steve Carl to say that. “Honestly, I know it is not quite what everyone wants to hear, but I wasn’t in a good mood that night,” Carl tells Cagewriter.
“I’m proud of it now but in the moment, I was so physically and mentally exhausted from not being able to train before the fight. I thought the fight was garbage. I was in a horrible mental state. We were barely moving for the first few rounds. I didn’t think it was an exciting fight and I wasn’t enjoying myself.”
Here’s some context. Five weeks before he fought Burkman (who himself dealt with multiple herniated discs in his back and neck), Carl pulled a muscle in his back while performing dead lifts in the gym. The Iowa fighter stubbornly refused to slow his training down and so the pulled muscle turned into a torn one, which then caused a bulging disc in his back two and a half weeks before fight night.
Carl couldn’t walk so, he certainly could not train. Still, he knew he would fight.
“I went to the ER, saw a physical therapist and I let ‘em know – ‘It doesn’t matter if you have to roll me in a wheelchair to the cage, I’m taking this fight. So, get me there as healthy as I can be.’ They told me that the only way I could have a chance of doing that is if I did nothing for the rest of the training camp up until the fight. I had to save it all for that day. I needed to rest and heal up a little bit,” Carl remembers.
His back healing was one matter, so was managing to get conditioned for a five-round title bout. Making weight without being able to break a sweat for the two and a half weeks before his fight was a whole other matter.
Carl tells Yahoo Sports that five weeks out from fights he typically weighs between 200 and 210 pounds. With two and a half weeks before weighing in, he had cut some of that off but still had a good deal to drop, and now, without the benefit of exercise.
Carl had already made his bed when he decided to fight injured so taking the last step to making sure he could fight was a no-brainer. Basically, Carl stopped eating.
“I started fasting the day they told me I couldn’t do anything,” he explains.
“I spent an entire weekend in bed and during that time I just drank water and stuff. Since I physically couldn’t do anything, that was the one thing I could do to get my weight under control.”
Luckily for Carl, and unluckily perhaps for his long-term health, this wasn’t his first extreme weight-loss rodeo. “I’ve taken fights last minute before,” he begins.
“I’ve taken fights an hour before weigh-ins, I’ve hit the sauna and dropped 16 pounds in five hours.”
After all that hard work and discipline, Carl won WSOF’s welterweight title. On Saturday, he defends it for the first time against former UFC terror Rousimar Palhares (who was cut from the top promotion not because of losses, but because he was too brutal in many of his wins).
Carl says that defending his new title doesn’t add any significance to the fight for him. Fighting Palhares does, however.
“Not really,” Carl says of the extra importance of being a champion.
“It’s great being a champ. I don’t want to degrade it or anything. But, too many people get that belt in their eyes. I’m not thinking about the belt, I’m thinking about the fight. It’s the same fight if were on the under card or in the main event for a title. It’s still the same fight, whether or not it’s for a belt.”
Carl does know that beating Palhares, who is alternately vilified and glorified for his nasty submissions and penchant for hanging on to them long after the referee has tried to stop the fight, will get him more attention.
“That’s one of the good things about this fight,” he says.
“The world is watching. There’s going to be people tuning in to watch him rip a limb form my body and there will be even more people wanting to see somebody beat him.”
Some fighters, like Jon Fitch, have said that they wouldn’t even fight Palhares because of his dirty approach. Carl says he understands that perspective but that may also be the only thing that being a champion has changed for him.
“First off, fighters really are scared of the guy. Not only is he dirty in not letting go [of submissions] but he’s also world-class. He’s amazing. That’s why people fear him. Not only is he dirty but he’s hard to stop. He’s so good at what he does. It’s one of those things where some people don’t want to fight that guy. Fitch didn’t want to fight him. As soon as I got the belt around my waist, my attitude changed.
“I want to be the type of champion everyone looks up to. I was offered the fight and I immediately took fight. Champions don’t pick and choose fights. Champions fight everybody.”

Tarec Saffiedine injured, Robbie Lawler steps in against Jake Ellenberger at UFC 173
|
By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief
An injury to Tarec Saffiedine in training has taken him out of a booking against Jake Ellenberger at UFC 172, according to a report from MMAJunkie.com.
Ellenberger will shift to UFC 173, with Robbie Lawler turning right around to step in as a replacement.
Lawler went to war with Johny Hendricks for five rounds at UFC 171 earlier this month, just falling short of capturing the UFC Welterweight Championship. That halted a three fight winning streak since returning to the UFC's welterweight division last year.
Ellenberger was supposed to fight Saffiedine in January before an injury took him out of that fight, so the UFC re-booked it for UFC 172 in April. Now, he'll try to bounce back from his loss to Rory MacDonald last July against a more violent opponent in Lawler.
UFC 173 takes place from Las Vegas on May 24, headlined by a UFC Bantamweight Championship bout between Renan Barao and T.J. Dillashaw.

The UFC is returning to San Jose, as heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez announced a FOX-televised card for July.
Velasquez, on hand to drop the ceremonial puck at Thursday night’s San Jose Sharks-Winnipeg Jets game inside the HP Pavilion, announced the show will be held July 26.
So far, no fights have been announced for UFC on FOX 12.
This will mark the 12th FOX show and third of four planned cards to air on the network in 2014.

Tarec Saffiedine Injured, Jake Ellenberger Now Battles Robbie Lawler at UFC 173
Let’s just face it, Jake Ellenberger (pictured) vs. Tarec Saffiedine simply isn’t meant to be. After an undisclosed injury forced Saffiedine out of his UFC 172 tango with Ellenberger, “The Juggernaut” will now battle Robbie Lawler at UFC 173.
The UFC confirmed the switcheroo Friday afternoon.
Ellenberger and Saffiedine were originally slated to meet at UFC Fight Night Singapore in January, but Ellenberger had to withdraw that time after hurting his hamstring.
Ellenberger and Lawler are looking to ounce back from losses. Ellenberger most recently dropped a unanimous decision to Rory MacDonald in July. However, Ellenberger has won eight of his past 10 bouts.
Lawler, meanwhile, is trying to rebound from this month’s decision defeat to Johny Hendricks for the vacant welterweight title at UFC 171. “Ruthless” is victorious in three of his past four outings.
MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada hosts the May 24 festivities.

Roy Nelson thinks Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira has the jiu jitsu edge in their UFC Fight Night 39 main event
|
By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief
Into his fight with Daniel Cormier last October, Roy Nelson admitted that he'd had one of his worst fight camps ever. He ultimately didn't perform well against Cormier, losing his second straight decision, but in an interview on Wednesday's UFC Tonight program on Fox Sports 1, Nelson said things have gone much better this time around for his fight next month with Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.
"It's much better than my last one," Nelson said of his training camp. "There have been no illnesses for coaches or training partners. I'm looking forward to this one."
The fight itself with Nogueira pits two fighters with extensive jiu jitsu backgrounds against one another. However, Nelson said Nogueira's got the ground edge in this fight, while he'll be bringing the edge in power.
"Advantage-wise? Back in the day, I'd say I was an excellent jiu-jitsu guy, but I'm old," Nelson said. "I give him the advantage there, because he's the legend."
"I hit harder, so I always have an advantage [on the feet]. Look at Dan Hendo."
The two will fight on April 11 in the main event of UFC Fight Night 39 from Abu Dhabi, airing live in the U.S. on the UFC Fight Pass.
Penick's Analysis: Nelson certainly has the striking edge, and the chin edge as well as he's near impossible to stop. They're also fairly comparable on the ground, so it's hard to see Nogueira having enough of an edge there to give him too much trouble. It may come down to a striking battle there, and if that's the case, it's going to be an opportunity for Nelson to halt his losing streak.

Renan Barao to defend bantamweight title against T.J. Dillashaw in new UFC 173 main event
T.J. Dillashaw has been on a roll, having won five of his last six fights in the last two years. But on May 24 at UFC 173 at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, all of his abilities will be put to the test.
The former cast member of "The Ultimate Fighter 14" will face champion Renan Barao for the bantamweight title, replacing Chris Weidman-Lyoto Machida as the show's main event. The Weidman-Machida fight was moved to July 5 when Weidman needed minor knee surgery to both of his knees.
In facing Barao, Dillashaw will be taking on one of the great pound-for-pound fighters in the world in Barao. As hot as Dillashaw has been, Barao has been way hotter and for way longer. Barao lost his opening bout as a professional in 2005 and has gone 32-0 with a no contest in the nine years since.
Barao is coming off a first-round stoppage of Dillashaw's Team Alpha Male teammate, Urijah Faber. It was the second time that Barao defeated Faber.
Faber campaigned for Dillashaw in the ring after the loss to Barao at UFC 169 in February, and when the Weidman-Machida bout was postponed, Dillashaw got the nod.
Dillashaw was stopped in the first round of the TUF finale on Dec. 3, 2011 by John Dodson. Since then, he's beaten Walel Watson, Vaughan Lee, Issei Tamura, Hugo Viana and Mike Easton. In October, he lost a disputed decision to Raphael Assuncao in Sao Paolo, Brazil, a bout that was named Fight of the Night.
He was scheduled to fight Takeya Mizugaki at UFC 173. Mizugaki's status on the card has not been determined at this stage.
Mukai Maromo meets Graham Spencer for lightweight title at MFC 36 in February
The Canadian promotion recently signed a new multi-fight deal with Mukai Maromo, and he'll meet Graham Spencer at "MFC 36: Reality Check" later this winter.
MFC 36 will take place Feb. 15 at Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, will get a main-card live broadcast on AXS TV.

Brian Houston Transitioned From Football To MMA, Still Looking To Improve After UFC Release (Exclusive)
Brian Houston got the chance to see all the glitz and glamor of the UFC.
However, he failed to get his hand raised on either instance, dropping bouts to both Derek Brunson and Trevor Smith.
Houston isn’t about to give up on his dream of becoming the best, though. Instead, he’s ready to re-focus and stick to a better training program in hopes of making it back to the “big leagues” in the near future.
“It was the best thing for me to get in the UFC so early,” said Houston, during a recent interview with FightLine. “Now I know I can make a living and I know I belong in the UFC.
“I needed this obstacle in my life. It’s leading me to my goal here on Earth.”
Transitioning to MMA from football
Houston, a former Hampton University football star who also shined in track and field, turned pro in 2012 and won his first four fights – three of which were finishes. That came after three 2010 amateur fights.
After playing indoor football in Omaha, Nebraska, Houston had to make a choice: continue trying to excel on the gridiron, or venture into the world of MMA.
“I was going into the new season and the coach told me I might not get a lot of playing time,” Houston said. “I didn’t feel like being a practice guy, so I made up my mind that I was gonna do (MMA) full-time.”
Houston was coming off his first amateur victory, a decision over Jeff Souder, and the decision was made for him.
“I just quit at that moment and dedicated my mind, as well as my body, to fighting,” he said. “I never looked back after that.
“I knew I could compete and do well, I just never knew how good I would be. Honestly, I still don’t. The things I want to do are evolving every day into something more effective with a base of creativity.”
Learning to work hard in the training room
Houston has taken it upon himself to become a “gym rat,” something he frowned upon while competing in multiple sports in high school and college.
“I was lazy to say the least,” he admitted. “All I wanted to do was compete and party. I did really well in football my senior year (at Hampton), and won the MEAC decathlon and got second in the javelin…I just hated the offseason with a passion.
“I relied heavily on my athletic ability, but never did any extra. I was super lazy in high school; I was never dedicated to anything in my life until I started fighting.”
He is perfecting his game at American Top Team in Florida alongside countless UFC and MMA greats. In fact, Houston laughed and responded when asked about his training partners, saying “I could name drop, but that would take a long time.”
Reflecting on a tough loss to swallow
Houston’s most recent fight was a split decision loss to Smith, and it still pains him to see footage of the fight to this day.
“I felt I had the fight won, but was nervous being that I ‘let it go to the judges,’” he said. “I controlled the standing for the first three minutes of the fight and took him down once. He didn’t get a takedown until 1:30 left in the round. He didn’t do anything except transition well. Other than that, I was in no danger.
“He also didn’t hit me with anything clean. They gave him points for punches I was actively slipping or let roll off. He really wasn’t effective on the feet and I countered his kicks with punches and a takedown. I clearly won the second.
“In the third, you could say he threw more punches, but they were so sloppy. I saw everything coming from the locker room. I hit him with more effective strikes but he got a few knees in. He threw combos and every punch missed, but he was getting credit like it did something. They (the commentators) wrapped a bow around some dog crap.”
Houston continued, saying he felt the scoring was used “according to USA Boxing rules. You know that’s amateur, not pro scoring. The more I watch it, the more upset I get. It’s still my fault for not finishing him like I should have.”
Despite the rough exit, Houston is keeping a look towards the future with high hopes. He is looking to book a fight in the soon on the regional scene.
“As long as I stay in the gym and learn, I will be beating a lot of high-level guys,” he said. “I’m hunting stars with this iron I’ve been sharpening. Solar stars can be destroyed by the iron element.”

Video: Strikeforce's Larkin lashes out at Rockhold's withdrawal, questions UFC timing
The middleweight today told MMAjunkie.com Radio he's accumulated all the bumps and bruises that come with four months of training.
Yet Larkin wouldn't think of bowing out like his opponent did. He said he needs to fight every five months, or he creates problems for his girlfriend and everyone else around.

Gus - "Jones is avoiding me"
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight titleholder Jon Jones is trying to avoid a rematch with Alexander Gustafsson. That's according to "The Mauler," who wasn't as perplexed as everyone else when "Bones" suggested the towering Swede be paired off against fellow 205-pound contender Daniel Cormier, who was victorious in his light heavyweight debut just last month. After all, a fight against "DC," Gustafsson tells BE Sport (via MMA Fighting), means no fight against Jones. Quote:
