Eddie Alvarez, Shogun/Vera, UFC Light-Heavyweight Title Shot: Morning News Roundup – 7.31.12

The Rexplex Sports Complex in Elizabeth, N.J., in December of 2003.  Ah yes, I remember it well.  The ring was set up next to a skate ramp, with a big curtain seperating us MMA folks from the kids doing tricks on their skateboards.  As for the fights, some lanky dude named Luke Cummo put his jiu-jitsu skills to good use and won his bout via submission, while another up-and-comer named Jay Hieron completely steamrolled over his foe.  We paid attention to those bouts a bit more because Cummo and Hieron were somewhat established in the area, and though people cheered when Eddie Alvarez scored a dominant KO in his MMA debut, no one knew who Alvarez was or what he'd eventually accomplish in the sport.  Why did I take this stroll down memory lane?  Because Alvarez is leading off your morning news roundup.

  • Former Bellator lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez has one fight left on his contract, and it looks like it's going to be used for a match-up against fearsome Brazilian monster Patricky "Pitbull" Freire.  When it comes to fighter contracts and the willingness of promotions to re-sign their stars, there are a lot of moving parts that must taken into consideration - things like actual cost, anticipated revenue and just what the parties can do to further each other's interests.  As one of Bellator's first "big" signings, Alvarez brought a ton of credibility to the organization, and Bjorn Rebney definitely made it worthwhile for the Philadelphia native in terms of cheddar.  But nothing lasts forever, so here we are with a high-ranking lightweight very likely about to enter free agency.  What do you do with him if you're Bellator?  Give him a tough, sure-fire exciting match-up that will make your October 12 show a memorable one of course.  And if you're Alvarez, you're going to want to win in the most impressive way possible to make sure your value when you enter free agency is at its highest.  Well, you know who wins in all this?  Us fans, because, Alvarez vs. Freire... yikes!  That's all kinds of "wow"!

  • Yesterday UFC president Dana White said Saturday's UFC on FOX 4 main event between Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Brandon Vera would determine the number one contender for UFC light-heavyweight champ Jon Jones' belt.  Reactions were mixed (to put it lightly).  Now White is backtracking a little bit and saying that if either of the occupants of Saturday's co-main event - a tilt between Lyoto Machida and Ryan Bader - look impressive enough in victory, they could get the title shot instead.  This certainly makes more sense.  At least, only insomuch as Jones has pretty much slaughtered everyone that he's faced (including Shogun, Vera, Machida and Bader in prior match-ups), and why not offer up the title shot to whoever looks good?  At this rate, Jones is going to be the first UFC champ to get to fight two challengers in the cage at once.  (He'd probably win that fight, too.)

  • Former UFC welterweight contender Jon Fitch will be facing rising star Erick Silva at UFC 153 in Brazil.  You have to imagine that at this point, after having had a run at the title but failing to move the needle in terms of exciting the fans, Fitch is on that spreadsheet that the UFC keeps that's titled "Fighters To Get Rid Of".  Dude has to do something to get off that list...

That's all for now.

Nick Diaz, Anderson Silva, Travis Browne and Invicta FC: The Morning News Roundup – 7.27.12

Howdy. I'm Jim Genia. You might recognize me from such great literary works as "I, Armbar" and "Tito Ortiz's Head: Friend or Foe?" While Maggie Hendricks is covering some sort of athletic event called the "Olympics", I'll be filling in here at Cagewriter.  Yes, it's a temp job, but please think of me as that really cool substitute teacher you had in high school, the one who said nothing when you disrupted class and set fire to the lab, yet did not hesitate to plant drugs in your locker and call the police.  Heh.  Anyway, here's some news to start your day:

  • Cesar Gracie, coach to the ultra-talented UFC top welterweight contender Nick Diaz, tweeted that there will be an announcement on Graciefighter regarding Diaz's career today at 4:00 p.m. (PST).  If you'll recall, Nick Diaz... yeesh.  The big question mark these past few months has been whether Diaz has truly retired or if he'll get in the cage once more.  Therefore, we can expect Gracie's announcement to be one of the following: "Nick Diaz is not going to fight again", "Nick Diaz is going to fight again", and "Can someone tell Nick Diaz to call home?  No one's heard from him in a while and everyone's pretty worried about him."  Stay tuned!

  • According to ESPN, UFC middleweight champ and untouchable superstar Anderson Silva wants to fight UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre next.

Of much more interest to Silva are the blockbuster fights that can earn him big money as he nears the end of his career. St-Pierre v Silva undoubtedly would make the biggest Pay-Per-View in UFC history, but while Guimaraes says Silva wants the fight, he admits it has not been offered.

Of course Silva would like St. Pierre in a big-money superfight next.  Who would you rather fight?  A welterweight champ whose knee could explode at any time, or UFC light-heavyweight champ Jon Jones, who sports an eleven-foot reach and has murdered everyone put in front of him?  Silva is no dummy.

  • Just yesterday Travis Browne was sad.  Ben Rothwell, who was to be his opponent at next week's UFC on FOX 4, fell prey to the injury bug, and Browne was without a dance partner.  He was subsequently booted from the card.  But it's a new day, and with this new day comes the news (courtesy of the good folks at MMAJunkie) that Browne will now headline UFC on FX 5 in October, facing off against Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva.  Hooray!  If you'll recall, Browne is big and dangerous and beats people silly - and being big and dangerous and beating people silly is good for main events.

  • There may be no offerings from the UFC, Strikeforce or Bellator this weekend, but that doesn't mean there isn't a way to get your MMA fix.  Invicta Fighting Championships, the all-female MMA promotion, will be having their second installment in Kansas City, KS, and the event will be broadcast for free on their website.  Here's a video promo courtesy of MMAFighting.  There are some extremely skilled and capable female MMA fighters out there, and a bunch of them are on Saturday night's card.

That's all for now.  Now excuse me while I go plant drugs in your locker.

ROUNDTABLE: Is Michael McDonald the best choice to face Renan Barao for the Interim UFC Bantamweight Title next?

Michael_McDonald_180_1.jpg
Is Michael McDonald the best choice to face Renan Barao in an Interim Bantamweight Title bout next, or are there any others who have a claim to that fight?

RICH HANSEN, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

Dude, Michael McDonald isn't the best choice for an interim title shot; he's the only choice.

FRANK HYDEN, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

I think McDonald has a good claim. It's not as though anyone is head and shoulders above everyone else. I think McDonald presents a good match-up.I would be in favor of this fight.

ANWAR PEREZ, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

Sadly, no, there are not any others in the division that lay claim to a title fight with Renan Barao. With Cruz out for a long time, Michael McDonald is the obvious choice, as there is not enough depth at the bantamweight division in the UFC. McDonald will provide a good fight for Barao, but after that fight, what next? Hopefully, some contenders will come into the mix and liven up the division.

GRIFFIN MARSH, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

I say Faber rematch because it's a bigger name fight and could make the UFC more money, but from a fan standpoint stick him in their with whoever. He's beating them and Dominick Cruz. He's the next Undisputed Bantamweight Champion.

ERIC HOBAUGH, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

I would love to see the Michael McDonald vs. Renan Barao fight. I think it is a better fight than any fight on the UFC 149 main card this past weekend. Barao has said he would like to wait for a fight with current Bantamweight Champ Dominick Cruz. In watching Inside MMA this past Monday, Dana White sounds like he will make the Barao fight. I think Michael McDonald will be the next fight for Renan Barao.

BRAD WALKER, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

Michael McDonald is without a shadow of a doubt the best choice for a fight against Barao - and I would be happy to see them go toe to toe. McDonald would even have a great chance to win that fight. Brian Bowles hasn't done enough to earn it just yet and Brad Pickett needs another solid win in the division to breach the top five. So in the end, no nobody outside of Michael McDonald has a rightful claim to a title bout right now - unless Faber begs his way into a rematch.

JASON AMADI, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

Other than Mike Easton, Michael McDonald is the only guy winning fights at 135 and since his fights don't put the audience to sleep, he's the next best guy. I really don't know what to say here, literally no one else is winning fights at a reasonable level in the bantamweight division. Give it to McDonald and pray that Dominick Cruz heals up in a timely fashion.

Alan Belcher points to Brazil as site of next fight

While an official announcement hasn’t surfaced yet, it appears UFC middleweight Alan Belcher will head to Brazil for his next bout based on a recent message he posted via Twitter. According to Belcher, his upcoming tilt will likely involve “taking a trip down south, very south.”

With the South American nation hosting past events, as well as an upcoming show in October, it seems to be a likely landing spot for Belcher with Vitor Belfort as a potential opponent. Belcher’s management team relayed their client’s willingness to face Belfort in his proverbial backyard last week and “The Phenom” has already been linked to the card.

Belcher Wants Battle with Belfort or Chris Weidman

Belcher has won four straight with all of the victories involving some form of finish. He holds an overall record of 18-6 with sixteen stoppages and success against Jason MacDonald, Patrick Cote, and most recently Rousimar Palhares. He is considered to be among the group of middleweights vying for a title-shot without a clear-cut contender currently in place.

Chris Weidman ends Mark Munoz’s title hopes with an elbow at UFC on Fuel 4

Chris Weidman said he wanted to make a statement with his fight against Mark Munoz at UFC on Fuel 4. Mission accomplished, as Weidman knocked out Munoz in the second round of their bout at UFC on Fuel 4.

Weidman started the bout by outwrestling Munoz. He took Munoz down early and kept control of him throughout the round. In the second, Munoz moved in to throw a punch and was met with an elbow to the face. It stunned Munoz, who fell to the ground. Weidman followed him there with several strikes, most of which were unnecessary.

With the win, Weidman makes a good case for a chance at UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva.

Travis Hapa Browne Travis Browne vs. Antonio Silva headlines UFC on FX 5 on Oct. 5A heavyweight bout featuring Travis “Hapa” Browne and Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva will headline UFC on FX 5 in Minneapolis, Minnesota on October 5th. The main event bout was confirmed by UFC officials on Friday.

The undefeated Browne (13-0-1) was scheduled to face Ben Rothwell at the upcoming UFC on FOX 4 card on August 4th. However, the bout was scrapped after Rothwell suffered an injury and another opponent wasn’t matched with Browne. Eleven of Browne’s thirteen wins have come via stoppage with nine coming inside the first round. He has wins over Chad Griggs, Rob Broughton, Stefan Struve and James McSweeney inside the octagon.

Silva (16-4), a former Strikeforce competitor, will be making his second appearance in the UFC. He suffered a technical knockout loss to former heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez at UFC 146. While in Strikeforce, Silva notched wins over Fedor Emelianenko and Andrei Arlovski.

UPDATE: Daniel Cormier facing Frank Mir in final Strikeforce fight

The moment Zuffa purchased Strikeforce fans began wondering when a crossover bout between the organization and the UFC would take place. They now have an answer – sort of, that is.

According to a report from USA Today citing UFC President Dana White, former heavyweight champion Frank Mir will make a single stop in Strikeforce this fall for a clash with Grand Prix winner Daniel Cormier. The fight is expected to be the final appearance for Cormier in the company’s cage, as he will follow his former peers over to the UFC with Strikeforce no longer hosting a heavyweight division.

UPDATE: Though the fight was originally linked to a September 29 show it now appears Cormier-Mir will be moved to a different Strikeforce card in October or November.

Cormier Questions How Many UFC Fighters Are Actually Willing to Compete in Strikeforce

“There has been a lot of speculation as to who Cormier would fight next, and this is the fight that makes the most sense,” stated White to the media outlet. “The reality is, Cormier is one of the best heavyweights in the world…He needs to fight opponents of that caliber, and Frank Mir is that guy.”

Cormier is 10-0 in his career including a recent outpointing of Josh Barnett and victories over Jeff Monson as well as Antonio Silva. Comparably, Mir holds an overall record of 16-6 but is coming off a strike-based stoppage to UFC title-holder Junior dos Santos.

Mir-Cormier will act as the card’s co-headliner with lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez’s defense against Pat Healy serving as the main event.

Anthony Johnson draws dual assignments this Fall with fights against Jake Rosholt, Esteves Jones

UFC veteran Anthony Johnson is set to make his light heavyweight debut in a matter of weeks and won’t wait long before taking to the ring in a follow-up performance, as two tilts have been linked to “Rumble” in the coming months. First, Johnson will face Esteves Jones on August 24 at Titan FC 24, and then the 28-year old will take on Jake Rosholt on September 21 at XFN 8.

Both bouts were announced this week by event officials.

Johnson Coming to Grips with Career as a 205er

Jones owns an overall record of 8-3 with six TKOs to his credit. Comparably, Rosholt also spent time in the UFC where he beat Chris Leben, and also holds past wins over Nissen Osterneck and Matt Horwich.

The 11-4 Johnson picked up a victory his last outing after being released by the UFC for weight-related issues. He has also found success in the cage against the likes of Luigi Fioravanti, Charlie Brenneman, and Dan Hardy.

Rory MacDonald ready to “hurt” BJ Penn

As UFC welterweight Rory MacDonald continues to progress as a fighter he also appears to be upping his game in the trash-talking department as well. The 23-year old (who celebrated his birthday over the weekend) first broke from his typically soft-spoken, humble demeanor leading up to a previous fight against Che Mills and now appears to be doing the same where upcoming opponent BJ Penn is concerned.

The 13-1 MacDonald recently spoke about “The Prodigy” during a press conference and was asked for his opinion on comments from Penn pertaining to MacDonald’s affiliation with Georges St-Pierre and TriStar MMA. In essence, the Hawaiian referred to both as being core elements to his motivation for taking the match-up.

“He’s upset because Georges whooped him but I’m going to hurt him even worse,” MacDonald replied.

Penn Ready to Go “Into the Belly of the Beast”

GSP came out with his hand raised in two prior meetings with Penn, winning the first by Split Decision and the second as the result of a TKO.

Penn and MacDonald are set to meet on September 22 at UFC 152. The bout marks Penn’s return from a brief retirement, while MacDonald will be going for his fourth straight win including victories over Mills, Mike Pyle, and Nate Diaz.

Free Agents: New Faces (And Some Old) to Look For in WWE

The last few months have seen prominent wrestlers disappearing from TNA and WWE TV and being scrubbed from the companies’ respective roster pages. Be on the lookout for a number of recent TNA stars showing up on WWE TV soon including…

Matt Morgan

The 6’10”, 325-pound former college basketball center, American Gladiator (he was “Beast” on the show’s most recent reincarnation), and Tough Enough contestant had a brief WWE run earlier this decade, which was ill-fated from the very beginning due to being saddled with a deeply terrible stuttering gimmick. Morgan, who is actually quite well-spoken, has honed his in-ring and mic skills considerably during his time in TNA and after his work in Japan. After his contract with TNA ended in June, Morgan dropped “TNA” from his Twitter handle and has been coy about answering questions about a potential return to WWE. Expect to see him on RAW or Smackdown soon.

Ric Flair

In May, the legendary “Nature Boy” was fired from TNA in the midst of a lawsuit over allegedly illegal leaking of Flair’s and others’ contract information to WWE sources during negotiations with talent. While Flair last severed ties with WWE in 2008, TNA permitted him to appear at the WWE Hall of Fame induction of the Four Horsemen earlier this year while still under contract. Of course, after his bittersweet sendoff on RAW after losing an unforgettable Wrestlemania retirement match to Shawn Michaels, Flair is officially considered retired in WWE, so this would most likely be a non-wrestling gig. Flair is scheduled to appear at the Insane Clown Posse’s annual Gathering of the Juggalos this weekend in Cave-in-Rock, Illinois. Sorry, I’m not going to be able to make it, I have a thing. It’s called a life.

Angelina Love and Velvet Sky

Love and Sky have among the best-rounded resumes of any of TNA’s female performers: between them the co-founders of the Beautiful People boast multiple reigns as TNA Knockouts Tag Team Champs (though never together, oddly)  and TNA Knockouts Champs. They had their heel gimmick down pat: it’s worth noting that Love and Sky were shoving paper bags onto people’s heads back when Cody Rhodes was still dragging around luggage for Hardcore Holly and Randy Orton. Love, performing then as Angel Williams, was a regular in WWE’s developmental territories for a few years before debuting in TNA. If WWE is looking to bolster its Divas division with reliable in-ring talent, as possibly evidenced by the recent hiring of indie veteran Sara Del Rey, Love or Sky would fit in well.

Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin

If the former Motor City Machine were to jump to WWE together they’d immediately be the best team on the roster by leaps and bounds, that much is obvious, though they’re also proven singles wrestlers fast enough to keep up with the likes of Sin Cara. WWE has a few too many 10-second Brodus Clay squashes, and not enough awesome tag teams or really quick guys. Just imagine them working with Tyson Kidd. Someone wanna make this happen?

I’ll look at some possible TNA acquisitions among recent WWE castoffs later today. That’s right, I’m looking at you, Chris Masters.

The Pro Wrestling Post: Raw reaches 1000

This past Monday was Raw’s 1,000th episode.  The show did very well from a ratings and attendance standpoint with big numbers.

Cageside Seats reports Raw 1,000 received a 3.84 rating with an average of 6 million viewers.  Broken down, it received an average of 5.44 million viewers in Hour 1, 6.32 million viewers in Hour 2 and 6.30 million viewers in Hour 3.

Attendance was 18,318 in St. Louis, Missouri with 15,000 paid according to The Wrestling Observer.

Payout Perspective:

It was a nostalgia show as many old WWE superstars made a return.  The ratings and attendance were expected since this episode was hyped for many weeks.  The stars appearing also helped with the ratings.  While Brock Lesnar got involved, he was secondary to the CM Punk heel turn which was done perfectly to set up further storylines for the company.

While the 3 hour show held up throughout the evening, we will see how well it does over the  course of time.  The good news as pointed out by The Wrestling Observer is the ratings for the first hour show that viewers have adjusted to the new time change.

Benson Henderson: “Every fight I have from now on is going to be the fight of my life, to be the career-defining moment.”

UFC lightweight champ Benson Henderson has no regrets about his performance against former title-holder Frankie Edgar when the two tangled in February at UFC 144. The bout featured Henderson handling the slippery Edgar and emerging from the bout with a belt in tow. However, in the eyes of some the fight was close enough to dictate an immediate rematch due to Edgar’s openness to the same scenario a few times while in ownership of the strap.

This time around Henderson plans of sealing the deal whether with a finish or far more convincing outcome in hopes of proving he’s on his way to being one of MMA’s all-time best.

“I just wanna be the best, the greatest of all time. I got a lot of hard work, a lot of steps to go, before I get there. Thankfully I’m not scared of hard work,” explained “Bendo” in an extended preview for their upcoming fight at UFC 150. “Every fight I have from now on is going to be the fight of my life, to be the career-defining moment. I will defeat Frankie Edgar for the second time. I will remain the lightweight champ of the world.”

Edgar Believes Belt Still Belongs to Him

Henderson has won four straight since joining the UFC’s roster including wins over Edgar, Jim Miller, and Clay Guida. Meanwhile, his success against Edgar snapped a seven-fight unbeaten streak for “The Answer”.

Check out the full preview below where Edgar responds plus Jake Shields-Ed Herman discuss their co-headlining clash:

With Rothwell out, Johnson vs. Swick promoted to UFC on FOX 4 main card

With heavyweight Ben Rothwell forced to withdraw from a planned meeting with Travis Browne, welterweights DaMarques Johnson and Mike Swick have been been promoted to UFC on FOX 4's main card.

As MMAjunkie.com previously reported, an ankle injury forced Rothwell off the card, and while UFC officials were reportedly pursuing Devin Cole as a replacement opponent, Browne was ultimately pulled from the card instead.

UFC officials today announced the plans and confirmed the promotion of Johnson vs. Swick.

Nick Diaz back in the gym, wants to fight Anderson Silva

The words fans have been waiting to hear since early February have finally surfaced – Nick Diaz has decided he wants to continue fighting rather than remain retired. The 28-year old announced he was done with MMA after a controversial decision loss to Carlos Condit costing him a shot at UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre’s title. However, with a few months to reflect on things it looks like he’s ready to return to the cage and will do so when his marijuana-related suspension runs out in early 2013 (if not sooner).

The good news came by way of Diaz’s manager/coach Cesar Gracie who took to GracieFighter.com to write, “For the last couple of months I’ve watched Nick begin to frequent the gym more and more. He’s training harder now than he has for many of his fights. It was obvious that training and fighting is in his DNA. It is who he is.”

“This week we had a great talk and he made it clear to me that he is ready to get back to the cage. Nick Diaz will return,” he stated, summing the situation up.

With St-Pierre off the table Diaz has set his sights on another divisional champion in the form of Anderson Silva. While the match-up may seem unlikely on the surface, Silva has recently expressed a desire to participate in “big money” fights and Diaz’s style/fanbase would certainly create such a scenario were they to face off in the Octagon.

“Nick has stated that he would like to take fights ‘that matter’. Since GSP will be fighting Condit, he has to look elsewhere. He will respectfully ask for a fight with Anderson Silva, a fighter he respects and would like to challenge,” explained Gracie. “Silva’s camp has been speaking of a fight with GSP, possibly even at a catch weight. Nick will take that fight in a minute but has told me that should Silva decide not to drop at all, he will move up to 185lbs to face the Champ.”

Gracie closed things out by saying he was meeting with UFC President Dana White in August to discuss Diaz’s return and urged fans to show their support online.

The complete statement from Gracie can be found below:

It’s been a trying time these last 4 months as I have been faced with the prospect that one of our team’s most talented fighters had decided to leave the sport. As a fan I’ve always admired what both of the Diazs brought to the cage; a combination of technical brilliance and raw violence.

Nate Diaz has finally put his game together and found the formula to propel him to the top of the 155lbs division. To see Nick leave at the top of his game was difficult.

For the last couple of months I’ve watched Nick begin to frequent the gym more and more. He’s training harder now than he has for many of his fights. It was obvious that training and fighting is in his DNA. It is who he is.

This week we had a great talk and he made it clear to me that he is ready to get back to the cage. Nick Diaz will return.

To address the NSAC suspension, I will say that we have appealed to the courts and if things go our way, it will be plausible that Nick could return as early as sometime at the end of this year.

For too long NSAC bureaucrats have acted with malicious incompetence towards the fighters. We will challenge them in court.

As far as future opponents, Nick has stated that he would like to take fights “that matter”. Since GSP will be fighting Condit, he has to look elsewhere. He will respectfully ask for a fight with Anderson Silva, a fighter he respects and would like to challenge.

Silva’s camp has been speaking of a fight with GSP, possibly even at a catch weight. Nick will take that fight in a minute but has told me that should Silva decide not to drop at all, he will move up to 185lbs to face the Champ.

I will be meeting with Dana next Monday August 6th to discuss this and other issues. If you appreciate Nick’s fighting style, please let Dana know that you want Nick back ASAP.

Report: Travis Browne vs. Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva Headlines ‘UFC on FX 5′

UFC Heavyweight Travis Browne

According to USAToday, heavyweights Travis Browne (Pictured) and Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva will headline “UFC on FX 5.” The October 5th event, which was originally slated to take place September 7th in Indiana, goes down inside Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Speaking of switcheroos, Browne was initially slotted to fight Ben Rothwell next Saturday at “UFC on FOX 4.” However, an ankle injury forced Rothwell out and the organization opted to pull Browne from the lineup instead of scouring their roster for a last-minute replacement.

Browne continued his torrid ascent up the totem pole with an easy submission win over Chad Griggs at UFC 145. “Hapa” is unbeaten in 14 professional bouts, although he did post a draw against Cheick Kongo at UFC 120.

This shootout marks Silva’s second Octagon foray. The Brazilian was blasted by Cain Velasquez in his big league debut at UFC 146.

The UFC has not taken their talents to Minneapolis since UFC 87 in August of 2008.

USA TODAY: Former UFC champ Frank Mir books Strikeforce fight vs. Daniel Cormier

Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir is temporarily leaving the octagon in favor of a Strikeforce cage.

USA TODAY Sports confirmed that Mir has agreed to meet Strikeforce grand prix winner and former two-time Olympic wrestler Daniel Cormier at a yet-to-be-announced Strikeforce event expected to take place in late October.

"Cormier is one of the best heavyweights in the world," UFC president Dana White said."He just won the grand prix and beat Josh Barnett. He needs to fight opponents of that caliber, and Frank Mir is that guy."

Travis Browne set for action against Antonio Silva at UFC on FX 5

Unbeaten heavyweight Travis Browne may have lost his shot to fight on FOX after opponent Ben Rothwell was recently scratched from the UFC’s return to network television but, in the end, it appears as though things may have worked out better for him as a result. Browne has since been scheduled to face Antonio Silva on October at UFC on FX 5 in the card’s headlining slot.

UFC officials confirmed the match-up earlier today.

Browne is 13-0-1 with eleven stoppages including three inside the Octagon. He was last seen stopping Chad Griggs with an Arm-Triangle Choke in the opening round of their rumble at UFC 145.

The 16-4 Silva made his UFC debut in May where he lost by way of TKO to Cain Velasquez. However, “Bigfoot” holds past wins over Andrei Arlovski as well as Fedor Emelianenko, and is no slouch when it comes to finishing foes with fourteen TKOs/submissions in his sixteen total victories.

The card is set for October 5 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Thus far the only other bout linked to the show is Bart Palaszewski-Diego Nunes.

Roy Nelson and Shane Carwin spar on Twitter, then delete tweets

Shane Carwin and Roy Nelson don't like each other - that much is clear.

The two went at it Thursday via Twitter, with Nelson inviting Carwin to set up a pay-per-view sparring session and Carwin bashing Nelson's possible coaches on "The Ultimate Fighter 16."

Then, almost as soon as it began, both fighters deleted from their accounts almost any trace of the skirmish.
