The Jones family jewelry box includes a Super Bowl ring and UFC championship belt (Photo)

Plenty of families have jewelry that is special to them. I have a pearl and sapphire ring that belonged to my grandmother that means the world to me. However, when you're a member of the Jones family, that jewelry is just a bit different.

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has a gold-encrusted belt for being the champ. His brother Arthur is a member of the Super Bowl-winning Baltimore Ravens, and he received his ring earlier this month. Jon displayed the two pieces together on his Instagram account. Jon's younger brother, Chandler, is a member of the New England Patriots, so there's a good chance this jewelry collection could grow soon.

Dana White says the UFC has not yet offered Nick Diaz a fight and have not spoken to his reps

DiazNate_Wide_1.png

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

After Cesar Gracie teased that Nick Diaz had a fight offer on the table from the UFC, Dana White is now saying that's not the case. The UFC President denied Gracie's claim in a text message sent to Ariel Helwani at MMAFighting.com.

"Nobody at the UFC talked to Gracie or anyone else that reps Nick," White wrote when asked about the alleged fight offer.

Diaz last fought in March, losing to UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre at UFC 158. He said afterward that he was retiring unless he got another fight with St-Pierre or one with Anderson Silva. However, White recently said that Diaz expressed interest in coming back, so word of an "on the table" offering made sense.

Penick's Analysis: I don't know what cause Gracie would have to fabricate an offer, because if there wasn't one and Diaz wanted there to be, he could have come to the UFC with that. Of course, maybe Gracie and Diaz were gauging interest in Diaz returning, or maybe Gracie's speaking entirely out of turn. For now, the official word is that nothing's been done to this point. Whether that changes or not, that's where things stand now.

Chan Sung Jung: “Many people think Aldo is superior to me in striking, but I don’t think so.”

When comparing the records of UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo and title-contender Chan Sung Jung, the two fighters appear to be polar opposites as far as the way in which each operates. Aldo owns thirteen knockouts in comparison to only two submissions, while Jung has eight tap-outs to his credit but only three strike-based stoppages. However, “The Korean Zombie” doesn’t feel such statistics are truly indicative of how his stand-up matches up with Aldo’s.

“We are similar in terms of striking. Many people think Aldo is superior to me in striking, but I don’t think so,” said Jung in a recent interview with the UFC. “The biggest difference is Aldo’s power in his striking. My style is (about) weakening my opponent little by little. Aldo does it with one big knockout strike.”

Though Jung appears to be comfortable going toe-to-toe with Aldo, the 13-3 challenger will no doubt be targeting takedowns throughout the tilt.

“I think he has a weakness on the ground,” assessed the 26-year old. “I will be pushing for it.”

Aldo’s outing against Jung is set to serve as the main event at UFC 163. The event is scheduled for August 3 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The full interview with Jung can be seen below:

UFC Primetime Specials for UFC 166, 167 and 168

MMA Junkie reports that the UFC is planning 3 “Primetime” specials for the last 3 PPV events of the year.  UFC 166, 167 and 168 will have its own set of specials and while nothing has been officially announced, one might assume that the specials would air on Fox Sports 1.

The first special will feature the third fight between Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos.  The second special, UFC 167, will feature Johny Hendricks as he challenges Georges St. Pierre for the welterweight title.  The UFC 168 special will presumably feature Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate and the anticipated rematch between Chris Weidman and Anderson Silva.

Payout Perspective:

The specials complement the multi-city/multi-country press tours that were just announced by the UFC.  The shows should land on FS1.  Hopefully, most of us will get to see them pending carriage agreements (with DirecTV, Dish and Time Warner) yet to be completed.  The specials reflect the commitment the UFC has to the last quarter of 2013 PPVs.  It is spending a lot of time, energy and money on each and its expected that these shows produce for the bottom line (i.e., gate revenue and PPV buys).

Can MMA help veterans with PTSD? (Video)

Veterans like Brian Stann and Tim Kennedy have found a home in MMA, and it turns out they're not the only ones. HBO's "Real Sports" took a look at how wounded veterans use MMA to deal with their traumatic injuries. For one veteran, the camaraderie of the gym does more to help him deal with his PTSD than "sitting around talking about his feelings."

Take a look back at the pivotal Forrest Griffin-Stephan Bonnar fight from the first TUF finale

By now, you have heard of the important bout between Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar at the first "The Ultimate Fighter" finale. It was on April 9, 2005, and happened at a time when the UFC needed a big win to keep going. The fight was fun, exciting and neither fighter gave up for even a second. It won the UFC many fans when paying customers was what the promotion needed most.

Now, eight years later, Griffin and Bonnar are retiring after long careers with the UFC. The promotion now has a network television deal after moving on from Spike. Bonnar and Griffin will be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame this week, so they're inviting a look back to the fight that meant so much. Is it how you remembered?

UFC vets Vladimir Matyushenko, Diego Nunes make Bellator MMA debut on Sept. 13 on Spike TV

Bellator_MMA_logo_1.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Bellator MMA's first Friday night event on Spike TV is coming to Temecula, California's Pechanga Resort & Casino September 13, and they're bringing an entertaining card to kick things off.

In the night's main event, longtime veteran and most recently UFC light heavyweight Vladimir Matyushenko will make his debut in the Bellator, taking on their former Light Heavyweight Champion Christian M'Pumbu. In the rest of the night's main card action, the opening round of the season nine featherweight tournament will kick off.

"This is exactly what I wanted entering Bellator, a tough test right from the start," Matyushenko said in a press release for the event. "I still have a lot of fights left in my tank, and this is the start of a new chapter in my career."

In the marquee opening round matchup for the 145 lb. tournament, one-time tournament winner and title challenger Patricio "Pitbull" Freire will welcome another recent UFC castoff in Diego Nunes. This is his first fight back since a loss to Champ Pat Curran in a great fight in January, the first ever Bellator fight on Spike TV.

"In my last fight, I made Pat Curran back pedal for 25 minutes, and I know he has doubts if he won the fight," Pitbull said. "When it comes to this tournament, it won't be Diego or any other guy that will stand in my way for a shot at the belt. I couldn't think of a better place to start than with Diego. It's going to be a great fight."

Also in this fall's 145 lb. field is the most recent tournament winner and title challenger Shahbulat Shamhalaev. Returning to the tournament field after his own loss to Curran in April, Shamhalaev will take on Akop Stepanyan in the opening round. In other featherweight tournament action, Des Green takes on Fabricio Guerreiro, and Joe Taimanglo meets Andrew Fisher.

"We had an absolutely packed house in March when we brought Bellator MMA live on Spike to Pechanga, and with this card I expect nothing but fireworks," Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney said. "Matyushenko vs. M’Pumbu should be a wickedly exciting main event and will be a great compliment to the explosive start to our $100,000 Featherweight tournament. With names like Pitbull, Shamhalaev, Nunes, and Guerreiro, this field is stacked."

UFC reportedly heading to Goiania, Brazil for event on November 9

MMATorch_Generic_Logo_wide_3.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

The UFC has two confirmed events and one further reported event coming to Brazil through October, and now it appears they're going to make it four straight months with trips to the South American country.

According to Ivan Rupp at Brazil's SporTV on Globo, the UFC will make their first ever trip to Goiania, the capital of Brazilian state Goias, on November 9 with a live event. This will be the UFC's first trip to the midwest region of Brazil.

The event will emanate from the Goiania Arena, a 15,000 seat venue which opened in 2002. No fights are scheduled yet for the card, but it will take place a week before the UFC's 20th anniversary pay-per-view event on Nov. 16 in Las Vegas. There had previously been reports that Brazil would host a Nov. 15 event the night before, but it appears they opted to move to the weekend before instead.

The UFC now has Brazilian events scheduled on Aug. 3 in Rio de Janeiro, Sept. 4 in Belo Horizonte, Oct. 9 at a yet to be announced location, possibly a return to Jaragua do Sul or the city of Barueri, then Nov. 9 in Goiania.

UFC President Dana White says they will be keeping the "Fight Night" and discretionary bonus system in place

Dana_White_wide_banner.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

"At the last press conference, I talked to the press I told them we're not doing away with the fight of the night bonuses. After I said that, I got a lot of feedback from the fighters. The fighters want the finish bonuses. They want the finish bonuses and they want the discretionary bonuses to stay the same, so, that's that."

-After discussing cutting "Fight Night" and discretionary bonuses to increase salaries for low-level UFC fighters due to complaints about fighter pay, Dana White said on Tuesday that it's not the move the fighters wanted, so nothing will be changing (via MMAFighting.com).

Penick's Analysis: It really didn't need to be a "one or the other" proposition from White, but they successfully used the scare tactic of removing the bonuses to shut down some dissension. Fighter pay could certainly be increased for the low level fighters in the UFC, because there's something to be said about being able to make a full-time living in the organization if you're a pro at the highest level. At the same time, the ones that actually should be making more are the ones who have been around for a long time and the ones populating main cards with regularity. Those that have a name people will tune in to see. That's where raises could and should happen, as the top athletes in the sport aren't at the level of their contemporaries in other areas. But with this announcement, White's letting the fighters who get those nods as the most exciting from event to event know that they'll continue to be taken care of as they've grown accustomed to.

Work Advice

So i just got promoted at my job to where im now supervising a group of 60 people 20 that im directly supervising,

now i have been watching over these people for a while now but it was more of a babysitter type job since i did not have the authority to fire/ write up peoople ect, i basically got them to do what i needed them to do because they respected me. but in the same token they got away with tons of crap because i could not really do anything to stop them

now here is where the advice comes in,

I need to know should i start of super strict and ease into a more comfortable fun role where the work still gets done and they do what they are told.

or should i start of slow and gradually get them to where i need them to be.

i just am afraid to start off strict and lose the respect i have gained with these people. because they are the type if i lose there respect it will take a long time to get it back

they are the worst group out of our campaign so they need to shape up and things have to change just curious on the best plan of action. basically if this was highschool i have the class from dangerous minds. where they will be great onc i get them to where they need to be but right now they are just all over the place

---

I have 7 and a half years of supervisor and management experience and am really good at it but i am put in a weird spot with this new job as i have never had to watch over the people before hand and have them get used to me first before i was the supervisor

job is in a call center atmosphere

PayPal accidentally credits man $92 quadrillion

NEW YORK: Oops! PayPal, the online money-transfer company, has accidentally credited a man in Delaware a whopping $92,233,720,368,547,800, making him by far the richest man in the world.

Chris Reynolds, 56, said he was shocked when he received his monthly statement via e-mail from PayPal last week, with an ending balance of $92 quadrillion, over a million times richer than the world's richest man, Carlos Slim.

The fortune of Slim, a Mexican telecommunications mogul, would pale in comparison at a mere $73 billion.

"I'm just feeling like a million bucks," Reynolds was quoted as saying by the Philadelphia Daily News. "At first I thought that I owed quadrillions. It was quite a big surprise."

Reynolds said he has been a PayPal customer for about 10 years and uses it to buy and sell items on eBay, including vintage car parts. He said he usually spends no more than $100 a month using PayPal.

After absorbing the initial shock, Reynolds logged on to PayPal's site and saw that his balance was listed there as $0.

If the prodigious account credit were true, Reynolds — who with his wife owns Reynolds Ink, a public-relations firm — said he would pay down debts with the money.

"I'm a very responsible guy," he said. "I would pay the national debt down first."

PayPal has admitted the error and offered to donate an unspecified amount of money to a cause of Reynolds' choice.

"This is obviously an error and we appreciate that Mr Reynolds understood this was the case," CNN quoted PayPal as saying in a statement.

Anderson Silva explains awkward staredown at UFC 162 weigh-ins

The weigh-ins for UFC 162 got a little weird. During their post weigh-in face off, UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva and challenger Chris Weidman smashed their faces into each other until the above picture happened. But Silva said it was just regular promotion of the fight.

"It's normal. It's promotion for the fight," Silva told Fuel TV's Ariel Helwani. "It's a fight. It's normal. It's working. My job."

Silva has gotten close with his opponents during face-offs in the past. Before his second fight with Chael Sonnen, Silva pushed his shoulder into Sonnen's face. So a little face-smashing? It's normal.

Second quarter report card: Who had the best upset, knockout, fight and more?

The second quarter of the year is coming to an end, so it's a good time to look back at the last three months. There weren't as many events in the last three months of 2013 as there were the first three, but there were still plenty of memorable performances. Who stood out? See the first quarter awards here.

Biggest upset: In "The Ultimate Fighter" finale, Cat Zingano pulled out a win over former Strikeforce bantamweight champion Miesha Tate. Stipe Miocic's opponent at UFC 161 changed late in the game, but he still came up with the win over Roy Nelson. Speaking of late replacements, James Krause wasn't even in the UFC until weeks before his fight -- and submission win -- Sam Stout at UFC 161. But the biggest upset was definitely in the final of TUF. Uriah Hall destroyed every opponent during his run on "The Ultimate Fighter." However, Kelvin Gastelum was the winner, coming up with a decision win over Hall at the TUF finale.

Best knockout: There were many fine candidates from this quarter for best knockout. You could go with Josh Thomson taking out the previously unknockout-able Nate Diaz at UFC on Fox 7, or from the same card, Yoel Romero's flying knee to Clifford Starks. Just last week, there was Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal's one punch knockout of Seth Petruzell in Bellator. The one that stood out the most, though, was Vitor Belfort's spinning heel hook to Luke Rockhold's face at UFC on FX 8.

Best submission: Glover Teixeira's submission of James Te Huna at UFC 160 was fast and fierce. Pat Curran's technical submission from a guillotine of Shabhulat Shamhalaev at Bellator stood out, too. But nothing was slicker and sweeter than Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza's arm triangle of Chris Camozzi at UFC on FX 8.

Best rising star: Teixeira's win over Te Huna, as well as his earlier win over Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, put him near the top of UFC light heavyweights. It's odd to think of someone who has been fighting for eight years as a rising star, but Matt Brown's dismantling of Jordan Mein did wonders for his standing among welterweights. The winner is Sara McMann, the Olympic silver medal winning wrestler has just seven pro bouts under her belt. Still, she made a huge debut in the UFC with a TKO of Sheila Gaff.

Best fight: The result was eventually overturned because of Healy's positive drug test, but that didn't take away the fun of Pat Healy's bout with Jim Miller at UFC 159. Krause and Stout's UFC 161 bout was fantastic before it ended in a submission with mere seconds left. The one that sticks out more than any other, though, is Junior dos Santos and Mark Hunt's bout at UFC 160. They both withstood ridiculously hard hits before JDS used a spinning hook kick to take Hunt out.

TNA is Losing Money

Quote:

Since leaving Universal Studios in Orlando, FL and taking Impact on the road, the cost of taping Impact skyrocketed to $600,000 per taping. The increased cost of taping Impact with no increase in ratings and revenue has caused the company significant financial problems. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff pushed the idea of moving Impact out of Universal Studios as a necessary game changer. TNA President Dixie Carter had stated that the move out of Orlando put the future of the company at risk. But there has been no increase in revenue to offset the added expense, and ratings have actually declined.

Recently TNA has released Crimson, Matt Morgan, DLo Brown, DoC, Taelor Hendrix, Tara, Christian York, Alex Silva, Madison Rayne, Joey ryan, whose combined salaries are less than the cost of 2 TV tapings.

UFC Champ Ben Henderson doesn't think he needs Anthony Pettis rematch to "cement anything," but can't wait for UFC 164

HendersonBen_Wide_2.png

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

"Do I want to see Pettis again? For sure. Do I want to get my hands on him? I cannot wait to get my hands on this guy. But do I need to fight Pettis again to cement anything, or put the final nail in a coffin or whatever analogy you want to use? Not really.

I was able to, as a man, move on from it. It happened. It kinda sucked. It wasn't a good moment. But guess what? I learned from it, I grew from it and I got better. I was able to be a better fighter in however many fights I've had since then. It's one of those things in life. You have to man up and move on."

-UFC Champ Benson Henderson talks to BleacherReport.com about why he hasn't exactly set out to get a rematch with Anthony Pettis despite that being his only loss under the Zuffa banner.

Penick's Analysis: This is a reasonable statement from Henderson regarding the subject, but there will be those who don't believe he's "cemented" everything until he defeats Pettis. It's the one blemish on his record, and the fact that he's been so disinterested in avenging that loss has a lot of people thinking he's been ducking it this whole time. He hasn't been, of course, as the UFC has chosen other fighters ahead of Pettis to put in front of him. Still, he never pushed for the fight, and it's only in front of him now because of outside circumstances. Ultimately, it doesn't matter, because the fight will happen on August 31, and no other outside ideas will play into it when they settle things at UFC 164.

Before UFC 162, Anderson Silva joked the perfect ending to Saturday’s bout was Chris Weidman winning

Anderson Silva's stunning loss opened the door for many MMA fans to yell, "FIX!" There were plenty of tweets to the Cagewriter Twitter suggesting the end of the fight was planned. This interview of Anderson Silva by SportsNet in Canada may add fuel to the proverbial fix fire.

Skip to the five-minute mark to see what Silva had to say three days before his loss. For those who can't watch the video, Silva talked about how the perfect ending to his fight would be Chris Weidman being the new UFC champion. He did smile and laugh throughout the interview, and he is known to be downright silly when dealing with the media.

And if you're still absolutely convinced that the ending to the fight was staged, UFC president Dana White has a few choice words for you.

"It happened so fast – and some of you said it, and I was thinking the same thing – 'What just happened? Was he goofing around? Is he still goofing around when he's down and he's getting ready to pull guard?' Then they show that replay, and you just see him get clipped, and his eyes just roll back in his head," White said in the post-fight press conference. "Yeah, the fix is in, you [expletive] idiots."

As was noted here on Cagewriter, Silva has put his hands down in fights and clowned around in several of his bouts. Weidman was the first fighter who took advantage of this tendency. That's not a sign of a fix. That's smart fighting.

Branch vs. Villefort, Mutapcic vs. Taylor added to WSOF 5 as middleweight tournament

http://www.mmanetwork.org/

David Branch vs. Danillo Villefort and Elvis Mutapcic vs. Jesse Taylor join the lineup of WSOF 5 as the promotion looks to find its first middleweight champion.

World Series of Fighting will host its first four-man middleweight tournament as David Branch vs. Danillo Villefort and Elvis Mutapcic vs. Jesse Taylor joins World Series of Fighting 5: Johnson vs. Kyle. Both bouts are slated to appear on the event's main card alongside a headlining light heavyweight fight between Anthony Johnson and Mike Kyle. The tournament's winners will move on to face each other for the 185lbs crown at a later event.

World Series of Fighting 5: Johnson vs. Kyle takes place Sept. 14, 2013 from Revel Resorts & Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

UFC vet Branch makes his third WSOF appearance after decision wins over Paulo Filho and Dustin Jacoby while Villefort is 5-1 in his past six fights. Most recently topping TUF 16 cast member Sam Alvey, Mutapcic relinquishes his Maximum Fighting Championship title to face another 'Ultimate Fighter' vet in Jesse Taylor. Never really hitting a stride in the UFC, Taylor has gone on to claim various middleweight titles in smaller promotions.

As with the promotion's previous events, WSOF 5 will be available live on NBC Sports Network at 9 p.m. EST. Preliminary bouts will be streamed on WSOF.com at 6:30 p.m. EST.

The Sunday Junkie: Nov. 25 edition

Even if the Anderson Silva vs. Georges St-Pierre super fight never happens, it sure has given fans plenty to talk about.

This week, The Sunday Junkie got reams of entries on the potential fight between the UFC's middleweight and welterweight champs, which could be in the works after St-Pierre's win over Carlos Condit at UFC 154.

But this week's Canadian winner, "A-shock," from London, Ontario, has some interesting ideas on how to infuse new life into the UFC's reality series, "The Ultimate Fighter."

Sean Spencer vs. Yuri Villefort added to UFC on FOX Sports 1: 3 in Brazil

http://www.mmanetwork.org/

A welterweight contest between two fighters looking for their first UFC win is the latest addition to September's UFC on FOX Sports 1 3 event, as Sean Spencer (9-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC) meets Yuri Villefort (6-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC).

UFC officials today announced the new matchup.

Featuring a light heavyweight headliner between Ryan Bader and Glover Teixeira, UFC on FOX Sports 1 3 takes place Sept. 4 and will serve as the lead-in to the new season of "The Ultimate Fighter." The event will be the promotion's return to Belo Horizonte, Brazil, after first visiting for UFC 147, which also took place at Estadio Jornalista Felipe Drumond one year ago.

The evening's main card airs on FOX Sports 1 following prelims on Facebook. The positioning of the Spencer vs. Villefort was not revealed but would seem a likely candidate for the preliminary bouts.

Spencer makes his second UFC appearance after falling short against Rafael Natal on short notice at January's UFC on FOX 6 event. Prior to the loss, Spencer had dropped just one fight in 10 fights on the regional stage.

Meanwhile, Villefort is certainly in a must-win decision after dropping back-to-back fights under the UFC and Strikeforce banners. The Brazilian started his career with a perfect 6-0 mark but has since dropped decision results against Nah-Shon Burrell and Quinn Mulhern.

With the addition to the card, the UFC on FOX Sports 1 3 lineup now includes:

Ryan Bader vs. Glover Teixeira
Yushin Okami vs. Ronaldo Souza
Joseph Benavidez vs. Jussier Formiga
Sean Spencer vs. Yuri Villefort

Marloes Coenen and Cristiane ‘Cyborg’s’ road to Invicta bout went through Strikeforce

Saturday, two women who once held Strikeforce belts will fight at Invicta FC 6. Marloes Coenen, the one-time bantamweight champion, will fight Cristiane Cyborg, the only person to hold the featherweight championship.

This is a rematch of their fight from January of 2010. Cyborg won with a TKO of Coenen in the third round. After Coenen lost this fight, she went on to win the bantamweight championship from Sarah Kaufman. She defended it against Liz Carmouche before losing her belt to Miesha Tate.

Cyborg fought two more times in Strikeforce. She beat Jan Finney, but then her win over Hiroko Yamanaka was overturned after she tested positive for a banned substance.

Before Saturday's Invicta bout, they defeated the same person in their last fight. Coenen submitted Fiona Muxlow with a submission at 3:29 in the first round at a DREAM event. Cyborg made her Invicta debut against Muxlow in April. Cyborg won with a TKO at 3:46, also in the first round.

Who will win the rematch? Speak up on Facebook or Twitter.

Watch Cris Cyborg get the win and belt at Invicta

Check out the complete fight between Marloes Coenen and Cris Cyborg from Invicta this weekend. The action starts around the three-minute mark, then continues until the fourth round. It looked like one stoppage was close to happening near the end of the second round, but Cyborg invited Coenen back to her feet. The same thing happened near the end of the third round, but Coenen did a better job defending herself. Finally, in the fourth round, Cyborg finishes to get the win.

As the announcers point out, Cyborg is more controlled and measured. She's not as wild as she once was. On more than one occasion, she stood up from the ground to restart the bout from the standing position. With the win, Cyborg became Invicta's first featherweight championship. Check out the complete fight card here.

Quinn Mulhern injured, Ryan Couture now gets Al Iaquinta at UFC 164 in Milwaukee

MMATorch_Generic_Logo_wide_1.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Ryan Couture has a new opponent for UFC 164 in Milwaukee, as his originally scheduled foe, Quinn Mulhern, pulled out of the event with a broken hand on Tuesday. According to a report from The Las Vegas Sun, Couture will now take on Ultimate Fighter Live finalist Al Iaquinta on the card instead.

Couture enters the event off a loss to Ross Pearson in his UFC debut in April. That defeat snapped a four-fight winning streak for the 30-year-old son of UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture.

Iaquinta steps up on short notice in his first appearance since last year's TUF Live Finale. He was submitted by Michael Chiesa in that bout, and injuries have kept him out of action since then. He brings a 5-2-1 overall record into this second UFC appearance.

UFC 164 takes place on August 31 from the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wis., headlined by the UFC Lightweight Championship bout between Benson Henderson and Anthony Pettis.

The Good Old Days

ive been doing something that I recommend for yall, go back and watch some badass Randy, Chuck, Matt Hughes fights. To me, the golden age of MMA (so far) has been UFC 40-80. With Tito, Chuck, Randy, and the gang on top. And I've been asking myself "why was this era so special?" and I think Ive came to a tiny conclusion. The guys that were on top in those days, they weren't the greatest athletes. UFC didn't have Bud Light, they had Mickey's Fine Malt Liquor. The crowd was rowdy, but only half as rowdy as the fighters. Guys were on top that were born to fight. They wouldn't have been pros in any other sport, but they brought it in the cage. Im not saying guys don't do that now, but then was really spectacular. So if you're tired of talking Anderson Silva and don't have anything else to do today, go back and rewatch some magic. All the Chuck vs Randy vs Tito saga was amazing. Hughes vs Newton 1, Trigg 1 and 2 were great. And I cant remember what PPV it was, but when Randy came back and beat Tim Sylvia, wow I just rewatched that fight and it was amazing. From the very first punch, until the bell, exciting all over again.

So do yourselves a favor, whether you're a new fan or have been watching since Royce was choking fools out. Go back and watch the magic in those fights. If you don't know where to start, I suggest watching any of Chuck's title fights. Then the nostalgia will kick in and guide you the rest of the way. If you find any gems, please mention or link them here so we can all enjoy!

Anderson Silva says he’s back

The Anderson Silva-Chris Weidman rematch is on. As mentioned on Cagewriter Saturday, the pair who fought just last week will rematch on Dec. 28. Silva will be in a new position -- fighting as the challenger instead of the champion. Still, he wanted to make one thing clear: he's back.

Watching what kind of Silva comes back to fight Weidman will be one of the most interesting stories in not just MMA, but in sports. The man's last loss was in the last decade, and what worked for him so many times before didn't against Weidman. UFC 168 cannot come quickly enough.

UFC middleweight Brian Stann retires from MMA to focus on broadcasting, family

http://www.mmajunkie.com/news/2013/0...n-broadcasting

UFC middleweight Brian Stann, a former WEC light heavyweight champion, has announced his retirement from the sport.

Stann (12-6 MMA, 6-5 UFC) exits the sport after a "Fight of the Night" loss to Wanderlei Silva in March in what will be his final fight. Stann confirmed his retirement to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com); he made his official announcement on "The MMA Hour."

Stann will now focus his career on broadcasting and his family. On Wednesday, FOX Sports announced the Atlanta-area resident is part of the new Atlantic Coast Conference football crew for FOX Sports South. Since the UFC's broadcast deal with FOX began in 2012, Stann has been active as an analyst for both FOX and FUEL TV's pre- and post-fight UFC event coverage.

"Yesterday, news broke that I'm going to be branching out and doing some college football," Stann said on the show. "But a couple months ago, I had made the decision and just wasn't sure when I would announce it, that I was no longer going to continue fighting. So I wanted to use this opportunity to say thank you. The relationships and experiences I've gotten from fans and fellow fighters have honestly made me a much better person. I leave fighting having taken more from fighting I have ever gave."

Stann said a desire to devote more time to his family helped him come to the decision.

"There's a lot of reasons that have caused me to retire from the sport," he told Helwani. "But really for me, it's the best thing for me, and more importantly for my family right now. I'm still going to be involved as much as the UFC will allow me to be in the UFC, and continuing to be an ambassador for the sport. But as far as competing anymore, as sad as it makes me, it's not the best thing for me as a husband and a father – which by far is the most important thing to me. I sacrificed more than I gained, and it's time for me to focus on my family."

Stann, who attended the Naval Academy and played linebacker on the football team, started his pro MMA career in 2006. As a Captain in the U.S. Marine Corps, his tours of duty included time in Iraq, where his service during "Operation Matador" earned him the nation's third-highest military honor – the Silver Star.

During time away from the Marines, Stann trained and fought. His second pro fight was for the WEC prior to that promotion's purchase by Zuffa, owners of the UFC. Stann started his career 6-0 with six first-round knockouts. At WEC 33 in March 2008, he won the promotion's light heavyweight title against Doug Marshall.

But at WEC 35, not long after leaving active duty in the Marine Corps, Stann lost the belt in his first defense to Steve Cantwell – a loss he would avenge in his second UFC fight a little more than a year later.

Stann debuted with the UFC at UFC 97 in Montreal, but was submitted by Krzysztof Soszynski in the first round. He rebounded with decision wins over Cantwell and Rodney Wallace in 2009 before a loss to Phil Davis at UFC 109, all at light heavyweight.

But then "All American" went on a nice little tear after dropping to 185 pounds. He submitted Mike Massenzio for a "Fight of the Night" bonus, knocked out Chris Leben at UFC 125 , then stopped Jorge Santiago in the second round at UFC 130 for another "Fight of the Night" bonus.

That three-fight streak of stoppages earned him a crack at Chael Sonnen in Sonnen's first fight back after a suspension for elevated testosterone levels. A win there would have cemented him in the UFC's middleweight title picture. But Sonnen submitted him in the second round at UFC 136 in Houston, then went on to a win over Michael Bisping that led to another shot at Anderson Silva's title.

After a knockout win over Alessio Sakara in Sweden in April 2012, Stann lost a decision to Michael Bisping at UFC 152 in Toronto this past September. And in March, Wanderlei Silva knocked him out in the main event of the UFC's return to Japan on FUEL TV, giving Stann three losses in his final four fights.

Now Stann turns his attention to the broadcast booth and analyst's chair, where his UFC work already for FUEL TV and FOX has been lauded.

Along with his military service and pro MMA career of more than seven years, Stann is married with two daughters with a third daughter on the way. He also is the author of a book, "Heart for the Fight: A Marine Hero's Journey from the Battlefields of Iraq to Mixed Martial Arts Champion," his memoir of his service in the Marine Corps and first few years as a fighter, and his Hire Heroes charity helps military veterans find employment after returning from service
